D&D (2024) Treantmonk's Ranger DPS video:

The main thing is that he calculated the paladin using half their slots on damage via Smite.

While the Range only uses their free Hunter's Mark. So they still have all their slots.

Not exactly an apples to apples comparison, because the ranger doesn't have any apples. (single target melee damage spells).

Yup. He also didn't pick a subclass and Ranger specialty isn't melee.
All the good 2014 Rangers I saw used bows. And weren't beastmasters.

Less damage doesn't make the class bad as long as what you're getting in return is worth it. Totem vs berzerker barbarian for example.

I still think at some point the ranger should lose concentration on HM. 13 or latest at level 20.

Should have been class features vs spell. Bonus action use also hurts. 2014 it's fine but changes to Barbarians, dual wielding and weapon masteries make it less than ideal. Nerfs to sharpshooter feat as well.

Ranger was split into two videos. Next video he will do more detail, use more spell slots on damage, and still comes up short. Also does two handed, and even a true strike build.

Area spells were heavily buffed. Treantmonk also does not cast magic weapon. I also think after level 13 your bonus action is not needed that often to reapply HM or switch targets.
Either you fight a big monster where single target is needed or you fight mobs where you should use area damage anyway.
If you fight mobs that don't last mkre than 2 rounds anyway, single target damage was not your concern to begin with.

But maybe I am wrong here.

Still focussing on single target damage.

And he compares with the rogue I guess. But the rogue is single target only.

And I really believe, that if you want to focus on single target damage at level 5+, you probably should just multiclass into fighter/rogue.

I'm leaning towards similar conclusion.

Traditionally you MC out after level 5 or so from a basic powergaming PoV. Fighter/rogues the obvious one. Level 8s another obvious bail out point.
