Even then I think we need some actual builds.

I don't expect Ranger to compete with Barbarian at melee.

Even in 2014 it was good at range. Sharpshooter nerf and TWF buff may negate that.
It's still good at range.

Like I said before, Ranger is probably the best ranged+melee+control combo in 5e.

Yeah kinda how I see it. Battlemaster fighter maybe best archer in terms of dpr.

Warlock might be that damage+control thing as well.

Barbarians and Monks kinda stink at ranged combat. White room also doesn't account for missed attacks due to range.

Hunter bow ranger is going to be good at AoE. Even melee doesn't look that bad either until 11.

Topple requires teamwork and initiative luck.
you want to act right after your ranged allies and before all your melee alies.
If your DM allows older editions Delay mechanics it works, if not, there needs to be Ready action usage and loss of Reaction slots.

graze is a no brainer that simply works, and it works better the tougher opponents you face.
Also, while graze still provides some benefit with another source of advantage, topple provides nothing additional in that situation.

this was even worse.

need to make HM without CONC calculation to see how it fares against other classes.
I do not think it would make much difference. I think that it would matter much. The Ranger is bonus action constrained and really needs something like a smite or weapon cantrip that can replace or compete with Hunters Mark or something that spike the Hunters Mark damage in a way that scales with level.
Something like the Hunter's Colossus Slayer 1d8 once per turn that scales with tier.

After watching this video, it seems like Rangers are definitely not doing much single target damage. The question is, do their other abilities make up for it? I play spellcasters and I don't have any expectation of doing a ton of single target damage ... but I make up for it. Where do Rangers sit here? And I don't know is the answer to that question from me. I suppose we'll have to see some more analysis on the class to figure that out.

I feel like Hunter's Mark, and thus Ranger damage output, could be fixed with a simple change to the spell (my changes in RED):

Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. Your Concentration and damage increase with a spell slot of level 3-4 (up to 8 hours, 2d6) or 5+ (up to 24 hours, 3d6).
