On Puget Sound

First Post
Chizz points to an untidy line flapping loosely, halfway up the mast. I'll secure that. Could come loose in a gale, take a man's eye out.

He scrambles up the mast and, while rolling and tying off the rope, takes a birds' eye view of the whole ship, looking for defensible points, cover, things to climb on, swing from, or to throw or topple onto a foe... any advantage he might use in case of a fight. Athletics 25, Perception 27

Asterion looks at his new comrades.

"I'll be below deck, at my forge, should anybody need me."

The minotaur leans forward and speaks in a hushed tone.

"Or, Lochlan, perhaps we could look around for your quarry. I expect that he's below deck. If we...move him to my forge, you'll have leave to talk to him as much as you want. My hammerfall will surely cover up the noises."

Before Asterion move below the deck, he tries to talk to him without having the captain or a crew member overhearing him. "I have a question for you. How Kumar became the captain of this ship? Do you know the story, and who was the captain before him?"

"Kumar, like most evil men, didn't come into his fortune by virtue or luck. He was a young buccaneer who joined up with the crew of a ship called The King's Gallows. The captain of that ship was a vicious old shark named Frend. Kumar moved up in the ranks of the crew until he was Old Frend's first mate. One day, they captured a merchant's ship. That's the very ship we're standing on. Kumar seized the moment and killed Frend, then boarded the Iron Fang. He scuttled The King's Gallows and told the crew they could join his new enterprise or they could do their best to swim the 50 miles to shore. They chose to join him, and the Iron Fang crew was born."

Asterion motions below deck.

"If you want to talk more, come to my forge. We can wait for Lochlan there."

Asterion turns and goes below to the comfort of his coal-fueled fire.

"Frend..." whispers Cliff to himself. The name give him no memory. He never knew the name of his previous life, only the moment of their death. But from what told the minotaur, most likely it was the name of one of his previous life. A recent one. Even with his armor on him, Cliff grabs a great load of equipment and carry it to the forge below. He puts down the equipment. "And who has access to Kumar's quarter?"

In the warmth of the forge, Cliff and Asterion discuss Captain Kumar. Asterion occasionally smacks the forge's anvil with his heavy hammer in order to mask the sound of their voices.

Asterion racks his brain, but cannot seem to find the exact answer to Cliff's question.

He answers uncertainly.

"I think only Kumar himself has the key to his cabin. In all my years on this ship, I've never seen anyone but him and Salmar go in there. Kumar never eats with his men - he always takes dinner alone in his cabin."

[sblock=ooc to VV]I hope I'm not overstepping my bounds with characterizing Kumar. Please let me know if I've said something inappropriate or out-of-character for him.[/sblock]

"Salmar... the dwarf? I don't think he told us his name." Cliff thinks a moment. "I'll go see the rower. I'll be back later."

On that, Cliff leaves the forge and goes to the rower deck, hoping the crew would not stop him for reaching the slaves.

Cliff goes down to the rower's room. The men are resting now, chained to the rows that are now inside the vessel. The stench in this part is terrible; rats run around their feets, the smell of sweat and urine are penetrating. Apparently the overseer is elsewhere, giving Cliff the chance to speak with the slaves freely.

Lochlan uses the excuse of transporting cargo to access the warehouse and storage area. He eyes some sailors who look at him suspiciously. If Lochan can't dissipate their doubts behaving like a true pirate, things could get nasty.

Chizz's natural agility and adapted as he was to the life on a ship, climbing the mast was as easy as a walk in the park. He spots a couple of interesting areas:
Above Kumar's quarters, the ship provides a defensible position, as a ballista is emplace there, and some crates, probably with ammunition obstruct the free passing.

Asterion indeed recalls Salmar entering Kumar's quarters, however he does not remember no one else ever entering. There is something odd about the shifter paladin, that Asterion feels. Something not complete...
