Pathfinder 1E [LPF] The Haven

As the rapping sound continues to punctuate the eerie silence of the haven, Samad and Thad close in on the source. Peering over the counter, Samad sees a hunched over man, one butter knife in each hand, tinging them together in nearly perfect time. His clothes are tattered, and his body bears horrible marks, from old scars to current wounds, stitched up but not fully healed and very slowly seeping moisture. A large curved blade is slung over his back, and he continues to mutter in what sounds like an ancient version of the current Landellian languages, the progenitor language of the entire region.

Looking back to the door, Samad realizes that he's about 30 feet into the room and has Thad with him. He can hear, in the distance, the rest of the group conversing and approaching, roughly estimating he has some 10 seconds before they reach the door.

Pirvinia nodded as Thuvian explained. The prudence made sense, but she had already prepared for that when they entered. Her defensive spells in reserve were able to be cast during a fray if needed. “I see.”

Meanwhile Far’ziel was ahead of the rest of the group, easily catching up to Samad with her flying. She whispered, “Who’s this?” She was prepared to go and report back.

Samad ducked under the counter, out of sight of the thing when he heard the mephit's voice. He had not expected to be reunited with his allies so soon. Still, at least there was only one. He whispered, "An old wounded man, methinks his mind is not still with him."

Samad slung his bow on his back and drew his blade. If need be, he had faith that he could handle this man, if he turned out to truly be a threat.

Shortly after Samad and Far'ziel exchange words, the man behind the counter stops rapping the silverware together and stands up, looking around intently. He mutters again in his ancient tongue, and conspicuously moves to find the source of the sound. In short order, he steps around the corner and sees Samad and Far'ziel, Samad with weapon drawn. Almost immediately, the wounded man draws his weapon from over his shoulder and steps back, calling out to the two in a rather challenging way. He does not seem very happy about the situation.

Samad looked around, and, slowly, placed his sword on the ground, standing back up and holding his hands out in front of him in a gesture of surrender. He looked over at Far'ziel, "No, he is human, correct? Surely he can at least be reasoned with."

The elf didn't know how to begin to make contact with the man, but even if he couldn't understand the gesture, Samad's allies would be here shortly.

Jonas heads out with the others, striding boldly along but keeping silent as they converse quietly amongst themselves. When the group enters the room and the wounded man comes around the corner, the big half-orc tenses but does not raise the falchion he holds firmly in hand. He shakes his head as the man barks his challenge, and replies softly, "Our apologies, friend. We do not understand your tongue. We seek no trouble here."

Not seemingly understanding a thing that is being said, the man keeps his distance. Holding his weapon in the right, he uses his left hand to wave off Samad, Far'ziel and the newly arrived Jonas towards the door while continuing to speak. From the intonation, it seems that he is attempting to ask questions, although nobody in the room can understand his words. It sounds like Old Landellian or some similar language. He has yet to get to the point of shouting--his words are not much louder than the muttering Samad heard as he came into the room.

As the rest of the heroes get within earshot of the proceedings, Thuvian hears it and can tell the man is indeed speaking a dialect of Old Landellian, and although the exact words escape him as they are not very loudly or clearly spoken.

As Pirvinia arrived, her familiar briefly spoke in that strange, unique language they shared to update her on the situation.

The sorceress pulled out a wand and triggered its spell on herself, “Whatever language he is speaking, I should be able to understand it. However, that does not mean I can speak it in return. However, I have some parchment and a pen to draw pictures if needed.”

She put her flask away and retrieved the other items from her haversack.
