[Adventure] Serpent's Skull: Souls for Smuggler's Shiv (DM: Mewness; Judge: THB)

OOC: By "proficiencies" I only meant the weapon and armor that Kane will be using. I.e., if you plan to switch him to something other than longsword and cloth I'll want to know, so that I can give him items he likes.

(But you can go ahead and switch skills around if you want--I wasn't attempting to imply that you should, however.)

Oh and thanks for the pic. I'll use it.

OOC: Actually given that Kane has been surviving on the island by himself, Nature seems like a very reasonable choice.

About Kane's background: Have I got it right that he dresses the same way as the man who killed his father? (Hoop in one ear, turquoise boots, leather braid in his hair.)

Castile chases after the escaping spider unsuccessfully. By the time she returns, emerging from a very thick patch of bushes, Kane has already been freed. She mentions "It got away" with a disappointed look before she notices the man hiding from Aerys. Castile approaches him.

"Hiya, stranger. I think I missed the introductions. I'm Castile." Kane can see that the lady addressing him is a young Dwarf in Dauntonian garb - a warrior, by the look of her equipment. "I'm glad to see someone else alive in this place. After the wreck and the spiders... No, nevermind. It's nothing." Castile places a reassuring hand on Kane's shoulder and smiles. "You're safe with us. If the spiders come back, the other fighters and I will handle them. You just stay near Aerys and try to stay away from the fighting."

OOC: Apparently Castile didn't get the memo that Kane is a PC. ;)

Takahaan carefully watches the strange, lanky man as he emerges from the web coffin in a shock-like state and introduces himself to his saviors. The dragonborn's interest is piqued as he notices Kane's scarred eye, among other strange, exotic features.

Unsure if the stutter is due to an unconquerable timidness, a brilliant mind hindered by a clumsy tongue, or just the shock of being caught in the webbing, a gargantuan spider's lunch, Takahaan has trouble coming to a conclusion about Kane.

As Kane clumsily walks through tough webbing toward a solitary spot in the undergrowth to prepare (and sulk in embarrassment), Takahaan blinks a couple times before turning back to Noriaki.

"So long as he finds it in himself to hold his ground against any more of those web-spinning, jungle-jumping scum, I could not care less about his quirkiness," he says, low enough for only those immediately around him to hear.

Kane positively glows at the dwarven woman's warm welcome ... right up to the point where she mentions staying near Aerys, where he seems to visibly tense up like a coil.

"A-ae-ae ..."

He gives up on the word, the frustration and embarrasment evident. Kane then seems to nod at Castile and lower his eyes. His voice is heard, strong and crystal clear quite suddenly, without even a trace of a stutter although there is something in its tone that seems slightly off and unnatural.

"Well met Castile. I am in debt with all of you. I would pay that debt with my Art. I am Kane Arcane. I spit in the eyes of Netari and his sense of humour, this is not where he will bury me. I would help you find a way off the island. Words are not my friends but I am not a coward. I will stand with you, not behind you."

Strangely enough Kane's mouth did not move even slightly at any moment while he spoke, though the words were quite clearly heard by all and not within the head.

He raises his head and meets Castile's eye with a cheeky grin and begins flicking a gold coin into the air.

OOC: Mewness yes, you're absolutely right. Kane dresses how he remembers the pirate who killed his father dressed in what may be the vain hope that one day someone mistake him for that man or mention the likeness, and so find some kind of lead to him.

"What a way with the ladies this fellow has!" laughs Gelik, apparently feeling better after listening to Hú Lí's music. "One look at him and Aerys is taking her clothes off." (Aerys ignores this, but it draws a sharp glare from Sasha.) "One look at her and he's practically swallowed his own boot. I hope his feet are more nimble than his tongue--if not, we should be better off bundling him back up in the webs and carrying him. Well, shall we go find that water? Perhaps I am over-nice, but I consider standing in a rainstorm with my mouth open to be a far cry from being able to drink and bathe at my choosing."

"But who isn't a bit quirky, around here?" Noriaki says under his breath, tucking the old sash into his satchel. He bows slightly to Kane, "Well met. I am Noriaki Matsumoto, third son of the House of Storms, student of the sword under Master Hachi Danmyou. Now, let us find that water, before my clothes become any more soiled."

OOC: I will also spend a surge, putting me at 1 surge and 24 HP, if I'm right.

OOC: Yeah, I forgot about Hu Li's healing. I'll use a healing surge as well, bringing me up to 20 HP, and making me have 3 surges left.

"Greetings, stranger," Hú Lí says to Kane, "The valiant Noriaki," she mimes swinging a huge sword, "the staunch Castile," she stands sturdily as if swinging an axe, "the noble Takahaan," she portrays a lunging sword thrust, "and the inspiring Captain Dartmoor," she moves her arm forward as if ordering troops to charge, "have all made their names known to you. It shall be my duty to present to you the rest."

She taps twice on her drum, and introduces the others, pointing to them in turn.

"This personage is Aerys, she is known to follow the sea." *tap* "She also has a taste for music."

"Next is Alkas, who has also been a sailor." *tap* "He now carries a big hammer."

"Sasha with the red hair is a student." *tap* "She is also fond of hunting."

"Jade was a prisoner" *tap* "Held in manacles against his will."

"Gelik has learned not to trust shifty merchants." *tap* "He is fond of grumbling."

"Ishirou is, like many of us, from the Kingdom of Jade." *tap* "He practices the virtue of silence."

"and I am Hú Lí!" *tap* "Traveler!" *tap* "Musician!" *tap* "Entertainer!"

"We have come to this place by a strange adventure, which I will now tell."

She beats her drum quietly and rhytmically as she chants, swaying back and forth as she describes the ocean, dodging back and forth as she describes the battles, and looking solemn as she describes the deaths.

"From Daunton we set forth, sailing on a ship
A fine ship, plying the seas on a journey of but a day.
But the treachery of the Shifting Sea took the ship, took us
And left us here on this island of ill-omened legend.
We awoke on the island, lying on the sand,
Lying there, our belongings stacked beside us,
Lying there as though placed by some unknown hand.
There were creatures from the sea, creatures with grasping pincers.
We fought them off, then gathered our things
Along the shore, there was the wreck of the ship we sailed on
Lying there upon the rocks, the waves lapping around it.
Those who are strong among us, they braved the rocks,
Braved the rocks and climbed out to the ship.
They found the crew dead, their bodies strewn on deck.
Climbing back to shore, they brought what goods they could,
But still we had no water, save that of the sea.
So to find water, we came inland, searching for a source.
Then came the spiders, and now we have reached this place.

"And now we are met here," she concludes. "Pray, tell us how you came to this place."

Rather than struggling with the name and making a fool out of himself again Kane smiles and imitates his bow raises his hand in greeting.

When the Bard begins introducing the others and retelling their story Kane is obviously enraptured and delighted, he applauds effusively when she finishes the tale. He goes a little pale when she asks him to retell his own story. His shoulders slump with resignation as he sighs. He nods towards Hú Lí and lowers his head. His voice emerges once again without a stutter, but again its tone is noticebly strange and unnatural, and his lips remain still.

"I dislike using my Ghost Voice to speak to you, but it will make the telling of my own misfortune all the faster. I have lost track of time, but perhaps a week ago, perhaps more, our ship was swallowed by a thick fog. Before we knew it we struck the Shiv and the boat began to break up and shatter. I am an Apprentice of the Art and was able to fly from the ship long enough to reach land. It was a spell I have begun to study but have been unable to master. Attempting to use it was reckless, but not to do so would have meant death, which I fear was the fate of the others on the ship. My landing left me wounded for many days. When my wounds mended enough to move I began to explore this cursed island in search of a way off. The spiders found me before I found them. And you found me before they fed. My thanks to you all once more. And thank you for sharing your own story with me in such an entertaining manner."

Kane raises his head and the blank expression from his face is replaced with a grin.

OOC: Kane uses his cantrip Ghost Sound to express himself when he has to speak more than usual. But it's something he dislikes doing. Does Kane know anything about the Jade Kingdom?

Edit: Argh, rolled twice accidently. I accidently hit enter and it recharged the page. I didnt realise that made it roll the dice, so i did it again. How can you tell which was the one rolled first?
