AtG Howling Crag (5e PBP) OOC

In one campaign I GMd I started each adventure with a festival, that got the PCs (old and dew) together to showcase their prowess before they were recruited to go off on the mission.

Having a Festival now that Greyfalls is restored and Donnell installed as the laird seems like a great way to raise morale and assert that everything is under control despite rumours of giants (and as far as the general populace in Doyles Tor know, the Giant threat has been dealt with)
Thanks...yeah, maybe we can see how it goes. We could also do it as a flashback - like, the tournament already happened. It's up to @FitzTheRuke

Regarding the barracks, if Kharu is providing food, having the storehouse is a good idea, thematically. We can sell the goods as well - basically, trade and provide for the surrounding people. Colonel already recruited 4 guardsmen and Donnell kitted them with armour and weapons.

I paid to kit 6 but I'm wondering if I can use the last two to buy barding...

So, I edited my post fairly heavily and I think it's a bit better than it was and I hopefully managed to capture Donnell's personality a bit better. I'm really enjoying the writing with this group - it makes me want to improve my own writing.

Also, at the end of my post, I wrote: "Cain wants you to assemble your team."

I feel like the group needs a name. For a couple reasons:
1) it's not really Donnell's team (but I was riffing off of Fitz's OP) and;
2) I think it would be cool to have a reputation/name. Sure, we're adventurers, but WHO are we?! Do the people have a name for us? Do we still need to earn one?

Ignore that. I don’t know why I write anything when it’s past midnight

So Kahru currently has a Barracks and has recruited some Hunters (Archers) who he has been out hunting with, bringing in Venison for the Castle and Village
Anyway the hunting was intended as a flavour thing but I did note that using a Storehouse could generate a regular Meat supply for distribution.

So I was thinking that maybe I should swap out Barracks for Storehouse instead - make the hunters bringing in meat a regular function of the Castle.

So what do you all think? The Colonel already has a Barracks for recruiting defenders and I'm happy to convert my Barracks into a Hunters Lodge (Storehouse)

On the subject of "Donnell's Team":

There's always, in this game, been a question of "who has authority". Faldur requested the aid of Adventurers because he was unwilling to lose more men than he'd lost on his initial foray Against the Giants. BUT. It was always "officially" his assignment from the King (if we're going with 2024 DMG Greyhawk, then we're talking about King Kimbertos Skotti of the Kingdom of Keoland).

It's unclear if the King sent Caine, or if it was someone else, but Caine came "in support" of Faldur, arriving a few days after the Adventurers. Caine "scored" a pretty solid victory in your game, but the "party" had already done much of the work, including presenting Faldur with Chief Nosnra's head. On top of that, they were instrumental in the final victory. In particular, the Adventurers had a particularly strong showing when it came to casualties and diplomacy. Generally they added to their forces over time, while Caine had lost forty men. Two-thirds of his company.

Donnell is "part of the system" while the other Adventurers are not - sure, it's true that the Colonel holds military rank, but it's unclear from where, and I'm pretty sure he's "retired" (at least commission-wise). Gimlak is a Prince, and has special privileges from that, but he's a "foreigner" (in that he's from the nearby dwarf kingdom). I think Kahru is something of a noble where he comes from, too - but that is far away.

In a lot of ways, this operation against the giants is an "official" one. And that makes Donnell in charge, even if he doesn't see it that way (which makes sense, as his personal relationship with the party was built as the opposite, he was the student).

I like it.

Are you okay if the storehouse is in the castle or do you want a separate building. I already have a room labeled for the storehouse in the castle. It’s easy enough to add another building.

either will do - it would need somewhere to hang the game carcasses somewhere cool (hmm can our dwarfs create coolstore using the river flowing through the internal plumbing?) and facilities for salting the meat, and a smokehouse too would be good too :)

I find it easy to imagine how that castle can run water, but I have a harder time imagining how it pulls off ventilation. But we can assume that it does. Though perhaps poorly.

If you look at the map, you'll see I've marked "storage" between two rooms on the bottom floor. One is full of wood and has access to outside, the other has the water running into it. both are close to the kitchen.

Originally, I thought the wood room would be storage (obviously, it's there to store firewood) and the other room would be a lab or something that needed water. Between the two rooms, it could be a store room and tanning area. (I imagine it needs water??) and both are open to fresh air.

I had a harder time selecting the smithy. To me, it needed to be a room that had a fireplace but all those places are low on windows and ventilation (especially on the basement floor). I'd thought about putting it in one of the guard areas at the entrance of the castle....but it might be a pain when defending the gates. Or worse - arm the assailants if they take the gate-keep.

Hey all,

Checking in. Just a reminder that I will be gone all of February (I mentioned this before- I will be out of pocket and abroad) and, perhaps, part of January. @Steve Gorak - if you post and there is a turn or two, I might be able to get Doc a post. If not, @FitzTheRuke feel free to take actions for Doc as needed until March to move it along.
