I'm Currently going to start playing a cleric soon *i'm still whining about the feats in another thread :S*

At Level 6 *i'm still thinking we will acheive it, so don't burst my metaphorical bubble* i'm planning to take the Leadership Feat, to gain firstly a Cohort (unknown class) and have maybe a few experts and Warriors as followers that quite literally follow me *we might implement a system where your chances to aquire a Expert or Warrior is harder than simply commoners e.g. Com1 50%, Exp1 30%, War1 20% (using a D10, Com1 1-5, Exp 6-8, War1, 9-10)*

Heres the problem. What would the best Cohort class be considering i'm playing a Melee based Cleric, whos main purpose is to fight close combat, cast aggressive/buff spells, with Healing secondary, as it's Spontaneous, and so i won't lose out.

I've considered taking possibly another cleric, and to play the character out purely as a laid back cleric, to Stay out of melee combat, and help with Buff/Healing spells, and Agressive spells/Ranged attacks secondary. However, i dont' think the group would be able to stand two Cleric's of Tymora, Constantly preaching (not to mention DM has stated he has alot of control over the character, and will only hold back, if we play the other character convincingly *e.g. decided to give his share of treasure as tith, rather than to buy My cleric a new Set of +2 Fullplate ;)*

Now i've also thought about taking a Fighter, Fighter/Rogue (Tymora is chaotic, and a Rogue/Sorceror), Sorceror/Rogue, Fighter/Sorceror...i'm REALLY not sure...

What would the best Cohort for a Melee cleric be?

P.s. if you could also add what the best cohort for a Lawful Good Wizard is, would be most helpful.

Thanks in Advance all.

You can never go wrong with a Fighter/Ranger/Barbarian/Devoted Defender for a cohort. Of course, you'll have to wait until at least 7th level to get a 6th level cohort.

However, I would look at your party before deciding. Do you have a traps rogue? If not, fighter/barbarian/rogue with a focus on traps. Do you have a full-time arcanist? If not, Wizard 5 (Transmuter with lots of Haste, Magic Missile, Burning Hands, Blindness/Deafness, Cat's Grace, False Life, Glitterdust, Greater Magic Weapon, and Fly spells would work although any kind of wizard would be effective). Do you find yourself converting more spells to healing than you'd like? Another cleric then. Are you alone on the front line? Fighter/barbarian (pick up Devoted Defender later :)

Well currently, our group consists of

Me, Cleric of Tymora, Druid or Meilikki *for the ranger proficiency's*, *crazy dual axe wielding* Shield Dwarf Fighter, Wizard, and i'm pretty sure we can convince the last player to go a rogue, not a Half-Orge Barbarian...the DM is making us convince him it's unbalanced, oh the humour....ha.....ha....

Half-Ogre barbarian rogue with trap focus??? :D

"Uhm, small one, could you hold this for a moment and press there, my fingers are too thick...?"

Bard. Hands down, bards make the best cohorts for a cleric. Consider that cohorts are lower in level than the PC, the cohort should not be in the front line. The bard, hanging out in the back taking the occasional potshot, sings (boosting everyone else's effectiveness), and throws the occasional spell.

Also consider that, as a cleric, the bard has access to lots of skill that you do not -- and it's really handy to have access to those skills in many situations.

Finally, if you every decide to make a temple, the bard becomes your music director, performs during the service, and provides good counterpoint to your long, rambling sermons. That makes for crowded services -- and that's pleasing to your church superiors (and prolly your diety).

Since you are a buffer, your best bet is something like a fighter. You buff, he goes in for the kill.

It depends on the party though. Generally, you should fill a gap in the party with cohort to get the best use of them. Since they tend to be lower level than the rest of the party, if they are simply going to slot into a niche already taken, they are going to add relatively little. In a balanced party, fighter is always a safe bet; though wizard is very useful- either as an assault wizard or one to craft lots of goodies for the party :)

Well, so far the bard idea comes out in Front. Though i can't imagine Tymora would be boring...i think of it more like an africa-american church, everyone dancing in studded leather, and fullplates, clashing swords, and dancing while singing praiseful tunes....

I vote for the following cohorts.

A monk (a la Kato) - think of him as a body guard.

A ranger (a la Tonto) - think of him as an archer defender (not a melee type).

If your alignment will support it, then a Paladin with a mount would probably be best.

If you want "different" then try a dwarf paladin with a mountain goat mount (weapon specialization (ram)), a halfling paladin dagger thower on an ostrich mount, or a boxing gnome in a kangaroo mount.

I would NOT choose a cleric as my cohort.

Clearly, I have not attended an Afro-American service recently...

I'm glad you like the idea, though! :)
