Billie Piper to quit Dr Who

The BBC has confirmed that Billie Piper who plays Rose Tyler is leaving the programme at the end of the current series. :\

They come and go, she will be missed as I really like the character but that happens. I just hope they keep the doctor longer than two seasons and they don't add a kid, we should be okay.

The BBC actually announced this last year before the first new season had finished broadcasting. Shortly after Eccleston said he wasn't staying, I think it was. There was actually some doubt that she would even be in the current season. Consequently I've been wondering all this season how they were going to get rid of her.
Possible (mild) spoilers:

I thought at first that they were going to redevelop the relationship with Mickey so that she'd end up leaving the Doctor to be with him. Now that that's out and they've been playing up the romance angle between Rose and the Doctor so heavily, I kind of expect her to die. Unless something dramatic changes later in the season I can't see her leaving of her own volition.

While watching the first season finale last week, I was wondering if I had heard incorrectly that she was in the second season. It seemed like the episode was written to get rid of her, but with Eccleston leaving they needed some continuity to bridge to the next season and so left her on (probably not correct, but that's how it seemed to me).

I liked her character overall, but several times in the first season I felt like she was the star and the Doctor was a supporting character. Maybe that will be better with the next one.
