Individual XP rewards for multiclasses characters... are they split as well?

Help!

Lets say I have a Fighter/Mage. XP is doled out for the encounter, lets say 5000 xp. Divided by 5 players, so 1000 xp each player.

Multiclass characters gain 500 to one class, and 500 to the other. Ok that makes sense so far. Now lets consider individual XP rewards.

So lets say the encounter had this fighter mage defeat 15 HD worth of enemies, while casting 2 level 3 spells to overcome them.

So 150 xp to the Fighter-side and 300 xp to the wizard side. Are these values halved to each side respectively? Or are they summed to the first xp reward and just halved resulting in equal xp values for both his classes regardless? Thanks

That depends on what you and your group want. For both my groups, we don't use the individual XP guidelines at all, and only give higher or lower XP for exceptional or lazy roleplaying.

Individual XP guidelines are a pain-in-the-behind to keep track of for the DM, but they add a certain level of detail and accuracy to XP rewards, and reward players for using their class abilities. If you choose to use these, I would recommend separating the awards per class for multi-class characters. This would mean that a thief/mage who acts primarily as a wizard gains more XP for his wizard class, and one who acts more as a thief gains more XP for his thief class.

I still wouldn't use those rules at all, myself. I prefer to decide when I want the PC's to level up, and give XP accordingly.

individual class awards are awarded in full to the xp of the class in question. In your example, the character would gain 150 XP to his fighter class and 300 to the wizard class.

Of course, as DM you can modify this to suit how fast you want advancement to occur. For example, I changed the rogue's XP bonus to 1 XP/ 10 gp from the 1/1 in the book.
