Would this be awesome as a BBEG or no? Keep him appearing as a fighter until suddenly he smites the Good-aligned PC. Would this surprise you or your players? I'm just looking for general opinions on this.

That would be a surprise... but some PCs will go out of their way to kill any distinctive NPC to prevent them from reappearing.

Well in that case the PCs will certainly be surprised when he then smites them and summons a Yugoloth by praying to Lolth

I don't know about having a Drider mount... Driders are functionally humanoids, they just have weird lower bodies. Mounts are usually supposed to be animals regardless. A giant spider would thus be better than a Drider. Consider then that can use webbing inject poison with its giant dagger-like fangs.
Also, all standard fiction about Drow would heavily suggest that it would be better for this to be a female. A special empowered chosen of Lloth would almost certainly be a drow woman.
You aren't being creative or interesting or unique by making your BBEG male even for the race where females are dominant, you are just using the easy, standard gender you always use even when it clearly isn't the best option.

I get that but being male adds to the surprise, they won't expect it. Lolth blessed because he's trying to control a drow city, and Lolth is just loving the chaos it's causing
Lolth is a chaotic demon but she is not about just being chaotic for no purpose. She thinks using chaos will bring her power. If she is empowering a male to cause chaos there has to be a goal she thinks this will help her accomplish. It could be as simple as she expects a female leader to rise and strike this upstart male down and thus prove herself a proper leader for Lloth to use for something else or there could be something more obtuse. You as the dm get to decide that. You set up can work but think through the whys and goals and I think that will help flesh out this evil champion of Lloth ( not a fan of evil paladin but to each their own).
