Planescape Manual of the Planes for 5e on DMSGuild

New on the DMSGuild is the Manual of the Planes for 5th edition. The cover is stunning.

Manual of the Planes. An invaluable, definitive work on the most fascinating aspect of the World's Greatest Roleplaying Game

It's over 300 pages and the credits page includes folks from The Draconomicon, The Dragonlance Companion, Tasha's Crucible of Everything Else, Planescape: Metropolis, The Honkonomicon and Planewalker.com

I love the special thanks.

This project was made possible by Roll20. Thank you for unlocking new horizons for the latest generation of planewalkers, bashers, berks, and touts. We’d also like to thank the giants on whose shoulders we stand when writing this book: Justice Ramin Arman, Richard Baker, Wolfgang Baur, David “Zeb” Cook, Bruce R. Cordell, Jeff Grubb, David Noonan, F. Wesley Schneider, Rick Swan, and all others who helped create and cultivate Planescape and the planes.

I've just bought it and am reading it now.

Here is the table of contents.

Fair. For what it's worth, we really would appreciate the honest feedback, even if negative.

It's not going anywhere, in any event, so hopefully we will see some reviews. If you're suggesting it would be helpful for us to recuse ourselves in this thread to provide space for people to share opinions without feeling like they might offend us, I'm happy to do so.
I think there are plenty of places for folks to do that. I also think folks here won’t let that stop them.

I too vote that yiu stay and hang out with us, if I get a vote that is.

I can’t justify 35$ on a book with no art without a detailed review being published first.
This isn't a full review, but in case it helps, I'm very much a "must have nice art" person. I bought the PDF without realising it didn't have art, and skimmed through it jumping to a few specific monster and planar locations that I was particularly interested in seeing a 5e take on. So good was the lore and 5e mechanics for the specific things I was looking for, that I didn't even notice there was no art until I came back to this thread and saw someone point that out. Am I someone with a low Perception score? Probably. Would I like the book even more if there was some art added? Definitely. Do I love it as is for the rich appreciation of past sources combined with a solid understanding of how to bring things up to date for today's D&D? Absolutely.

Very much so. I also question the concern raised, as if the product somehow must be lower quality than folks have exclaimed because one of the creators is on the thread. Patently ridiculous. No one here is shy with their true opinions.

I’m not going to argue with you over my opinion. This is what I think—it is my opinion. You disagree, and it’s fine that you disagree—that’s your opinion. And I truly don’t care that you think my opinion is “patently ridiculous”, it is still my opinion. If you feel the need to insult me or my opinion, by all means, go ahead. But no ad hominem, thank you.

Thank you for addressing my question directly. If I own nearly all the 2e stuff, and so am good on the lore, would this still be worth the investment for me? I enjoy buying third party stuff (Kobold Press is my favorite publisher), but have never bought anything off of DMs Guild so I think it’s fair in a bit wary.

If you were thinking of getting this for lots of new lore, you probably shouldn't. If you like the 2e lore and want to be able to easily use it in a 5e campaign, you probably should. The book pulls together a lot of past planar lore in one place (a surprising amount of it not from Planescape products) and updates it very competently for 5e.

You're welcome to believe what you wish, of course, but I personally think you're quite wrong on this issue. I simply don't see why anyone would hide negative opinions. This is all public after all.

Absolutely fair to be a bit wary. There are some new additions to lore, in particular where we wanted to flesh out some areas that have traditionally gotten the short end of the stick, but as a 2E library-owner myself I can say that we worked a lot with those sources to ensure as much continuity as possible while updating things to align with 5E canon when needed. If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to field them in PM; I'd be happy to provide a small excerpt as a demo for you if there's a specific thing you'd like to look at.

Thanks for taking my questions seriously. I really do respect the work you and your team have done here, my budget is just tight this month and I need to plan and think accordingly.

Completely understood. The point of me being here is to help people make informed decisions about whether this book is for them. Obviously I've got some inherent bias, but I think it's better to have someone come away saying "I'm not buying that but I appreciate your honesty" than to make a sale and lose trust and reputation. As I said, if there's something in particular that you're curious about, send me a PM and I'm happy to go into it in more detail.

In any event, it's not going anywhere - there's no fire, there's no FOMO, if it piques your interest but this isn't the month for it, it'll be there when you've got a bit more leeway. We're all in the same boat with our entertainment dollars and I respect that. :)
