But you can design 7. I didn't jump to 20 base classes in my own game for the giggles.

From what Ive gathered I think the only entity in this fight that'd have a problem with that is WOTC themselves.
And the people who insist on reducing the number of classes we have currently. The "why do we need a sorcerer, warlock and wizard?" crowd.

who think the fighter should be able to fly, throw mountains, and kill hundreds of enemies in a single round all using nonmagical abilities that cannot be countered or negated, all because wizards can cast wish and that's not fair.
The part bolded, who has said this? When?

I don't recall seeing it anywhere, but the thread has gotten long. I also do not recall you mentioning any particular need for these abilities to be counterable or negatable. Or that this need has any tether to a thematic source of power.

What I have seen are arguments on thematic grounds, where you think fantasy martials need an external supernatural power source to do fantastic stuff. And others (including myself) do not see this as necessary.

And I've seen arguments regarding what types of things a martial should be able to do, using wish as one (of many) yardsticks to measure against, and this has covered a wide range. These arguments have broadly been separate from discussions of thematic requirements. I haven't seen anything in these about counters or negation either.

In summary, it sure looks like you're inventing an unreasonable argument to contrast with your position.

This is known as a Straw Man argument. This is typically seen as poor form in good faith discussion.

As an aside, I'm always amused that people say "War Lord" is a terrible name for a class, and it implies that you're the best warrior ever, or you're automatically the party leader...but nobody bats an eye at "Battle Master".

Some other ones: Siege Expert, Combat Specialist, Smackdown King, Havoc Queen, Fray Witch, Melee Commander.

okay, I totally need someone called a Fray Witch to show up someday. That's just too good an image

I've been perfectly fine with changing the fighter. I just continue to request one feature be put into the lore: if you want a fighter to do supernatural things, give them a supernatural power source.

Ooh, I know!

Fighters use the magic that flows throughout the world, but rather than drawing it into their core, and using it to cast spells, they flood there body with magic to push their body beyond "human" limits, and to do amazing feats of martial prowess, like healing their own wounds, moving twice as fast as normal person, or catching knives out of the air. These heroic exploits could scale up at the fighter gains levels, allowing them to perform amazing heroic feats, like shattering barriers, both magical and mundane with a single blow, standing back up after they've been taken out, charging across the battlefield, trampling all in their path, and parrying/blocking impossible things...
