[OOC] Quickleaf's Rime of the Frostmaiden [closed but waitlist is available]

Hey @Quickleaf

Can you give more guidance around this? For example, can I plan on having an immovable headband of intellect-like item (maybe for other stats), and possibly more stuff? Recall my nasty old school scores:
Str 7
Dex 16
Con 11
Int 5
Wis 12
Cha 6
Thanks and cheers

It really depends what you're looking for.

Commonly, when my OSR friends and I roll 3d6 in order, we're open to play whatever the dice indicate we'd be at least somewhat competent at. For example, those are Rogue scores or possibly Dex-based fighter scores or possibly Ranger scores.

5e mentality is usually different from that, so if you have a specific concept in mind (e.g. Playtest Warlock or Cleric), then yeah you probably need to boost your Wisdom. You could boost it by using Playtest material, e.g. +2 Wis from Background (the Playtests give ability score bonuses based on Background instead of Race), and then further boost it with one of those +1 Wis feats, getting you up to 15.

Alternately, you could ask for me to homebrew a magic item – as your bennie for doing old school rolling. I'd need to understand exactly what you're trying to achieve first, however.

Alternately alternately, you could play a build that almost never relies on spell attacks or saving throws. Examples I've seen in play are the auto-damage spellcaster (magic missile, cloud of daggers, etc), and a buff-focused cleric.

Low stats aren’t the bad thing people tend to think they are. Use them to develop the character.

Why is your Int and Cha so low? Did you spend most of your time away from civilization? A low int just means you don’t know things, it doesn’t mean you’re stupid. Maybe you have a horrible burn scar that drops your Cha?

I didn’t wind up with any stats over an 11, and only one over 10, so I’m taking a Headband of Intellect so I can be good at SOMETHING, and I’m tying it to the character intrinsically so I can be interested in it. But you don’t have to do the same thing. With a 16 in Dex, you can be a number of good classes.

Instead of using the boon to shore up a weakness, maybe use it to boost your strengths? A weapon or an item that you can tie to your character’s backstory. Heck, a Ring of Warmth might save your life in this setting. You could have one for free! Or Boots of Elvenkind to boost your stealth. Lots of things open up.

@Quickleaf I am going over your house rules and I have a question about skills. As an Artificer I get proficiency in thieve's tools, tinker's tools and an artisan's tools plus another artisan's tools from my background. Should I just convert those to their appropriate skill from your house rules doc?

Glad you asked.

The appropriate skills would be Mechanics (thieves tools & tinkers tools) and Craft (artisan's tools - choose one).

Btw all of my house rules are open for discussion. If something doesn't feel right to you, please raise an objection; otherwise, I'll just assume it's all groovy. For instance, my house rules are meant for face-to-face/video play, so when I looked over them I realized that the "Bingo Style XP" and "Perception saves" wouldn't work well in Play-by-Post format, so I've nixed those two.

Hey DM, it looks like me having a Headband of Intellect would give me more skills. Imma let you pick them. Make them appropriate to the game, or around a certain theme. They’re skills that are basically given to me when I wear the headband, so they belonged to someone else who wore it. I like surprises!

Ok that makes sense for what skills replace what tools. Though I am still confused on my total skills I can take. From the packet an artificer would get 3+Int skills. So I am trying to figure out if I need to take Mechanics and Craft with those skill points or do I get those two skills for free.

So I had a reading failure. I completely missed that an artificer got Mechanics and a Craft for free.

Just y’all wait until we get to lvl 5. They upgraded Gaze of Two Minds.

Gaze of two Minds is a Warlock Invocation that lets you look through someone else’s senses, as along as they’re willing. Before, it took an action, and you had to rep using you action every round to keep it up, and you were blind and deaf to your own senses. It really sucked. Almost no practical use.

Now? It’s a bonus action. You keep using your bonus action to keep it up. You are NOT blind and dead to your own senses, and YOU CAN CAST YOUR SPELLS AS IF YOU WERE IN EITHER YOUR OR THE TARGETS POSITION.

There’s no distance limit, either. So I could use it on the fighter, and while he’s in the middle of combat, be casting my spells as if I were in his spot, even though I’m high tailing it out of there!

Or the more useful way to use it: cheating at cards!
