I first had calzone for the first time in college on the East Coast in the late 1980s. Stromboli were also available, although I don't think either were well-known away from the Midatlantic region at that point.
Stromboli, as I recall, are actually an NYC invention -- a way for blue collar workers to carry a pizza back to their workplace at lunch time and eat it one-handed while on the subway, etc. I've been making them at home many weekends during the pandemic and they're a great (and easy) meal.
