Dan Tudge of n-Space, makers of Sword Coast Legends, has just posted a major "State of the Game" announcement which recognizes that opinion on the game has been polarizing and that it does not meet the expectations of many, and how the company plans to address those issues. To that end, there's a whole bunch of upcoming update packs, which include more areas, control enhancements, a "cleared" outdoor area ready for placeables, new races, and the two seemingly biggest enhancements: a tile-based editor and the Rage of Demons storyline.
The original announcement for the closure of WotC's forums was that they would close today, October 29th, at 10pm PT (5am Oct 30th GMT). As of today, a short sentence appeared on the Magic: The Gathering forums that "The closing date for the Community Forums will now be November 5 at 10AM PT." Whether that applies to the D&D forums remains to be seen (I guess we'll find out very shortly). November 5th is, of course, a day where folks celebrate things burning! So either the D&D forums will close in five hours, or they won't...
White Wolf, the company that originally brought us the World of Darkness RPG lines, has been owned by CCP (the Icelandic firm which produces Eve Online) for some years now. That company's plans originally involved A WoD MMO, but that go cancelled last year. As far as the tabletop RPGs went, these were licensed to Onyx Path, a company founded by ex-White Wolf staff, and also include Exalted, as well as the various iterations of the Vampire, Werewolf, etc. lines. Well, White Wolf just got bought by the Swedish company Paradox Interactive.
New for EN5ider patrons! Halloween grows ever closer! Día de los Dinosaurios Muertos is a spooky 18-page adventure by Jensen Toperzer. You've heard of the Day of the Dead... but what happens when the dead are dinosaurs? When the raptors awaken to find their land overrun by hairless apes, they plot to reclaim their legacy. Can the PCs survive the machinations of Miquiztlicoatl, the velociraptor mummy lord, ancient reptilian priest-king of the feathered throne? This adventure for 14th-level PCs includes full-color maps, a pronunciation guide, the all-new Stone of the Inverted Sun, and - of course- intelligent undead velociraptors. Illustrated by Melissa Tillery; cartography by Justin Mason.
Cartographer Mike Schley has posted the enormous map of Northwest Faerûn from the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide. It's poster sized (10,200 x 6,600 pixels, or a 34-page PDF) or you can get the Artists Print version shipped to you in the form of a poster map. "This new absolutely massive map of D&D's Sword Coast and Northwestern Faerûn was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast to accompany their 5th Edition D&D game supplement Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide. lead your adventures through his exhaustive map of The Forgotten Realms' most Iconic lands and make sure to let it inspire some truly fantastic storytelling."
Following up on The Orr Group's Roll20 recent usage statistics, I've just gotten some figures in from Smiteworks, who make Fantasy Grounds. Fantasy Grounds is, of course, the officially licensed Dungeons & Dragon virtual tabletop, and so its usage figures reflect that, with a very dramatic lead for D&D - the most popular systems, in order, are D&D 5E, Pathfinder, D&D 3.5, D&D 4E, and Savage Worlds.
The fifth hardcover monster book for the Pathfinder RPG is set to hit shelves in next month. 300 new monsters, a bunch of player races, psychic critters, templates, and more. The new races include caligni dark folk, deep one hybrids, plant-bodied ghorans, and simian orang-pendaks. Paizo are holding an elimination contest to reveal previews of a bunch of monsters.
The D&D Extra Life campaign just passed $90,000 -- which means another preview from Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide (which released last week in preferred stores, and will be available everywhere else from November 3rd). This time, we get a look at the Duergar entry! If they hit $100K, we get to see the hi-res labeled map of the northwest portion of Faerün, from Amn to Icewind Dale and the Moonshae Isles to the Dalelands.
I use Google Analytics to track this website's performance, and especially to get some insight into usage patterns and (anonymized aggregate) demographic data. Here's a quick look at the reports for the last month. I grabbed a few snapshots of total users, gender and age demographics, and location data by country. There are no great surprises: traffic is healthy (although this is by no means the best month so far this year - one month had over 450K unique active users), the percentage of female visitors is still terrible low - far too low - and the US is by far the largest single country of origin. That last item is interesting - the amount of non-US traffic has increased a lot across the board over the last couple of years, and while the US traffic has increased in terms of raw numbers, it has decreased by about 15% in terms of percentage share. In other words, there's lots of new traffic coming in from other countries.
We've had a lot of looks at how various games are ranking over the months and years. We looks at stats from the largest virtual tabletops, we look at levels of conversation, and we look at ICv2's quarterly surveys. They've all said pretty much the same thing. However, it's also possible to look at anecdotal information on an individual basis, and this short report from Black Diamond Games, a store in Concord, California, may help contextualize some of this aggregate data.
I'm mainly writing this because every time a 5E product from someone other than WotC is announced, someone immediately asks "Huh? How can they do that?", and the entire thread gets derailed into an identical discussion on IP law rather than discussion of the product itself. Hopefully, this short article can serve as a convenient link, and those identical conversations can be avoided, and the actual products discussed. What follows is a brief - and shallow - coverage of third party products for D&D 5th Edition, and hopefully a way to help with that "How can X release products for 5E?" conversation which has cropped up daily for over a year now!
Next week, on Thursday 29th October, the official D&D messageboards (along with those for Magic: The Gathering, and WotC's other properties) close permanently. That's just a few days away now! Already, hundreds of WotC forum members have made their way over here to EN World. As a reminder, we have a special WotC Emergency Evacuation Lifeboat forum set up. If you're moving content (guides, great posts, other stuff that must not be lost!) over from the closing WotC forums, and you're not sure where to put it, this temporary forum is for you. You don't have to worry about where to put it - just dump it in there, and we'll move it where it needs to be. Don't worry, the link won't break when we move it!
New for TRAILseeker patrons! What do Choreomania, Disbelieved, Forthright, Grotesque, Healing Icon, Leper, and Stigmata have in common? They're all new horrific oracle curses for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, just in time for Halloween! By Carl Cramér; illustrated by Rita Marfoldi.
WotC has been putting amusing disclaimers in the front of every D&D 5th Edition book so far, and Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide is no exception. Here's what's inside the cover on this one! Blame Ed Greenwood, apparently...
I have just uploaded ZEITGEIST #11: Gorged on Ruins (Pathfinder RPG) to the downloads area for EN World subscribers. The 11th part of the critically-acclaimed ZEITGEIST adventure path, this is an adventure for calamitous heroes of 19th level. There are spoilers in the product blurb, so I've posted it separately below. This adventure was written by Paizo's Liz Courts and ZEITGEIST director Ryan Nock.
