TSR TSR3 Throws In Towel, Rebrands Wonderfilled

In the news story that never ends, after reversing its position earlier and admitting that it was NOT the original TSR reincarnated, the new TSR company, embroiled in acrimony for the last two weeks, and having blamed the widespread criticism it has received on Wizards of the Coast, has deleted its own Twitter account and rebranded its website, misspelling it’s own name in the process.

In just a week a much-loved trademark, which was associated with the creation of our entire hobby, and which generally attracted nostalgic affection as recently as a fortnight ago, has been utterly trashed in an astonishing display of self-destructive publicity and incompetence. Two companies (one of which was directly responsible for the damage) have now divested themselves of it, and most major conventions have banned the company behind it, due to the actions and statements of three people: Justin LaNasa, Stephen Dinehart, and Ernie Gygax. "TSR" is no longer a brand which anybody wants to be associated with — not even the company which ‘relaunched’ it two weeks ago, let alone the company they sniped it from. It has been a spectacular masterclass in how not to manage a brand.

This followed an astonishing day of activity where one of the three TSR3 founders, Stephen Dinehart announced - publicly! - that he had blocked WotC and Hasbro on Twitter. After everybody thought things couldn't get any more ridiculous, they did.

As TSR2 rebranded to Solarian this week (after TSR3 sniped their name and trademark due to a missed filing), we've now gone from two TSRs to zero TSRs in the space of a few days.

Most people assume that WotC (or Hasbro) has been in contact with TSR3 regarding its use of copyrighted imagery.

Meanwhile, search teams have been sent out for Michael, the mysterious PR officer announced last week who made two posts and then was never heard from again. In the meantime, somebody has set up a parody Twitter account for him.

Confusion reigns supreme.

Solarian is not Wonderfilled.

TSR2 is now Solarian.

TSR3 is now Wonderfilled.

I have the deepest sympathy for Solarian, for them to be dragged into this chaos.
Yeah, I know. Two businesses, each rebranding quickly because of it all. Sorry my clarity wasn't clear.

ETA: If there's a victim, it's Solarian. But Luke's Twitter sniping wasn't a great look. I hope now that that kerfuffle is over, folks there can get down to real gaming business goodness and put this behind them. Not so much the others.

Well this is certainly A Choice.
I still think it would have been easier to just issue a public apology, make amends, and move on...but what do I know? I'm just a dancing, imaginary creature from a Japanese video game.
That's kind of what the new PR person was trying to do, but with a "non-apology apology". And honestly, it was kind of working. It was falling off of everyone's radar, and there was nothing to fight with them about any more, and another month or two and everyone would have forgotten about it and moved on.

But now, they're in the news cycle again. Whee.

Lol, and they didn't even bother to get a proper SSL cert. They're using a self-signed cert, so most browsers are going to push you away from their site. LaNasa and crew are just a bunch of clowns.
Though my security settings are pretty high, I'm still able to browse without issues.

I'm steadfastly refusing to click on the "Accept Cookies" anytime I do though.

"Self-signed cert" also sounds kinda grifty, so somehow appropriate.

In about, what, a little more than two weeks, these bozos (and let's not mince words, Ernie, mainly) took a trademark that had significant goodwill attached to it -- and utterly destroyed its value.

They stole fire -- then they cast it into the Ocean above the Marianas Trench.

Unbelievable.

And one of the main bozos that's heavily involved in doing this is the son of one of the co-creators of D&D. It's crazy.

In all seriousness, I do feel sorry for some of the folks that got dragged into this. Lanasa can always just go back to his tattoo shop and put all this behind him. But the folks who put in effort to TSR2 and other projects will be left to pick up the pieces of their lives. All of this is drama is likely to taint the Gary memorial and museum, and it's another annoying chapter in the mess that is his estate and family legacy. It's hard to tell what kind of sorry to feel about Ernie and Giantland.
Personally, I think they all deserve everything they get from this. They’ve had many chances to do the right thing, with many long-time friends telling them directly how hurtful and inappropriate they are being, yet they’ve rejected that advice and kept going.
