Jarel-karn stares at his father's ghost. They told me a ghost is bounded to a location to haunt... or was it a person... but if it would have been a person, I would already have seen him... unless he couldn't manifest without some source of dark magic, like the one here... no, I have fought Rinch the Riser, there was enough dark magic around him to fuel my father ghost if he had been around me for so long... it cannot be possible... IT CAN'T!

"They are not what they seems, they play with us, let's kill them before they got us." tells Jarel-karn to his companions.

4) Trigger: An enemy hit any bloodied non-pure-defender ally within 10 squares or a bloodied Jarel-karn or anyone with less then 20 hp. Power: Channeling Shield Effect: Close Burst 10; You reduce the damage by 10 from the triggering attack. You next successful attack you make before the end of your next turn will do 5 more damage.

5) Trigger: An enemy hit in melee any non-pure-defender ally within 2 squares Power: Guardian's Counter Effect: You and your ally shift up to 2 squares as a free action, swapping position. You become the target of the triggering attack, in place of the ally. After the attack is resolved, you can make a basic attack against the attacker. (+16 vs AC 1d8+7 damage) [/SBLOCK]

Even with the heroes struggling just to endure the psychic energies, the shadow creatures are not content to sit idly by. They sweep down on the party from all directions. Most of them close into melee range and bludgeon their targets with arms of solidified shadow.

One hangs at the back and projects some type of dark field around Eithal's head. The goliath shakes her head in confusion and then adjusts her battle stance so she's facing Damen. Another one of the beings steps through the ambient shadows and reappears before the party. It blasts almost everyone with a tidal wave of dark energy, knocking the worst affected to the ground.

Kaz walks up a few paces. He groans and then opens his mouth to speak. This time, the voice that projects from him is a woman's. "Hahaha... Death was not the end for me, mortals! You may have dealt me a setback, but soon I will have a new body - one even more powerful than the last! Unfortunately, you will not live to see it."

Kaz locks eyes on Scarm through the obscuring cloud and then shambles through the darkness toward him. He swings his executioner's axe too high, narrowly missing the kenku's head.

[sblock=Beatrice]The paladins suddenly reappear as they charge right at you. The first yells, "Smite Evil, for great justice!" He stabs at you and connects with the blow, but all said, it isn't terribly painful. The paladin looks astonished by this. "You... you should be struck down..."

The second paladin, the leader of the group, comes in at your flank. He booms in a deep, heroic voice, "Never fear, comrade! I will send this crone to her grave! Smite Evil!" He thrusts at you and is about to strike true when Jarel-karn reacts with a quick spell. The paladin reappears next to the first one and stabs his spear deep into his chest. The wounded paladin cries out and falls to the ground. The leader withdraws his bloody spear, tears forming at his eyes.

"No... it... it was an accident. Athena, please!" The goddess is not swayed by his plea. A lightning bolt comes down from the heavens and strikes the paladin leader. He collapses to his knees as his holy power fades from his very being.

The other two paladins focus their attacks on Yishim. One hits the wizard while the other narrowly misses. They are silent in the face of their leader's fate. A few moments later, one of the shadow creatures comes at you and sweeps at your leg, sapping your strength. (slowed, save ends)[/sblock]
[sblock=Jarel-karn]One of the shadow creatures, nearly transparent and very hard to see, charges Beatrice and hits her with a solid blow. When the next shadow comes in to flank Beatrice, you open a dimensional vortex next to it. The shadow reappears a few paces away and strikes down the first one that charged her.

Your father, or at least the thing that's masquerading as your father, focuses its gaze on Eithal. You can see that she is disturbed by the sight. Moments later, she rigidly turns to face Damen as if her actions are not hers. It's almost like she is possessed.[/sblock]
[sblock=Eithal]The dragonborn, lacking any sort of subtlety, charges at you with his cutlass and screams the whole way. "KYAAAHHHH!!!" He gets past your defenses and slams the hilt of his blade against your chest. You gasp for air painfully and have trouble breathing. (-5 penalty to saves, save ends)

Behind Brastrix, one of the shadows projects some sort of dark energy field toward you. You make an attempt to dodge it at the last second, but its flight path curves and it veers right into your head. When you recover, you realize that you must have been flipped around by the attack. You turn backwards to face your enemies once again. (dominated, save ends)

GM: You are dominated. If you're still dominated when you take your turn, use Thorn Strike on the closest ally who's not in that cloud Scarm created (or on someone in the cloud if there's no other choice).
I know you get one Font of Life granted save, but here's a warning: something bad happens if you fail a saving throw against the dominate effect.

[sblock=Damen]Your sister weaves a spell, apparently having improved her skills as a mage. She steps through a dimensional door and reappears only a few feet away.

"Oh, brother, your words hurt. Now, fall to your knees and beg for forgiveness. Perhaps I will even let you have it." She conjures up another spell, this time creating a solid wave of shadow. It sweeps through the battlefield into you and your allies. You are slammed hardest by the wave and you fall to the ground on your rear.[/sblock]
[sblock=Scarmiglione]"What, where? - arrghh!" Sir Moynifriend is interrupted as your spell hits him. He looks back in your direction and growls in frustration. "Where are you, little bird?! ... No matter, I'll be back for you once I've killed your friends." He then charges Beatrice and swings his greatsword low at her legs.[/sblock]

GM: I like your insanity better than anything I was going to write, hehe. Keep it up. (But good stuff does happen if you succeed at the checks.)

So far everyone's been attacking their nemesis, which is fine of course. I just thought I'd point out that you're not limited to attacking only them.

Sanity check: The intense psychic energy radiating from this area is eroding your sanity. Once per round, you may attempt a DC 23 Insight check as a move action to not go insane.

--Jarel-karn interrupts this with Dimensional Vortex, hitting Will 25. He teleports Paladin 2 next to Paladin 1 (the only enemy in range). Paladin 2 promptly kills Paladin 1. And becomes a fallen paladin. Why not.
EDIT: It occurs to me that the paladins have 10 resist all, so they can't kill each other. But I think it's cool, so I'll let it happen in this case. He gets a +3 coolness damage bonus on the attack.

Paladin 3: Move to ground level and charge Yishim. Smite Evil hits Reflex 30 for 8 damage.

Paladin 4: Move to ground level and charge Yishim. Smite Evil misses Reflex 19.

Brastrix: Moves to K17. Destabilizing Strike vs Eithal hits AC 30 for 10 damage, and Eithal takes a -5 penalty to saving throws (save ends).

Ghost: Moves to N24. Corrupting Mind vs Eithal hits Will 18. Eithal is affected with mental disarray (save ends). This has the effect of Dominated, Eithal gains +2d6 extra damage on attacks, and the Ghost is invisible to Eithal.

Kaz: Minor: perception 21, spots Scarm. Moves and charges Scarm. Executioner's Axe vs Scarm misses AC 15 (with a -2 for attacking an adjacent square that's heavily obscured).

Drow: Move: Dimension Step, teleporting 8 squares to O13. Shadow Wave in a close blast 5, targets enemies only.
  • vs Yishim misses Will 16, but deals 4 psychic damage on the miss.
  • vs Jarel-karn hits Will 23 for 9 psychic damage and he is knocked prone.
  • vs Scarm misses Will 20, but deals 4 psychic damage, reduced down to 0 because of his resistance.

That is not very nice you silly fop! Beatrice says to the "paladin" nearby. I'll have to teach you some manners! She stabs the sword into the "paladin" warrior, Sir Moynifried then whistles and Killer clumsily makes a bite attack.

Next she blinks out of existence and reappears next to the blink dog. Raising her sword she charges at the "Paladin" and kicks him to the ground and stabs it into him. Not so pretty now are you hun?

Yishim sidles away from one of the Paladins, hoping to avoid his wrath as he conjures the most incredible of illusions. The other Paladin takes a swipe at him. Sir Moynifried, the two paladins and Kaz all see salvation and all else they might ever desire in their shadowy existence materialize several yards away. They all blindingly run to the spot, wallowing in the fulfillment of their desires and unable to move away.
