[Adventure] Rage of the Savage Lands (DM: Dekana, Judge: TwoHeadsBarking)

The swamp! It's bleeding from the ground - there must be an army of lizardfolk undead ready to rise up! Yishim wails.

He keeps his senses about him to recognize his dangerous wounds, however, and Beatrice's power closes many of them from afar. Yishim creates a devestating illusion under the paladins, and two are consumed by tentacles which pull them back into the earth. The drow falls prey as well and disappears from sight.

Just as Beatrice nimbly dodges one, the black whip launches towards Eithal, pounding its flank into the goliath's head. Even as the ghost nearby reels from the hit, a glimmer of consciousness graces Eithal's features.

Even as this occurs, Yishim sees through the illusion of the bloody swamp. No, it's... fine. The disease is playing tricks with me.

[sblock=Actions]
Minor: Healing Surge w/ Skald's Aura (2d6=5). Thanks Beatrice.

Standard: Grasping Shadows +11 vs. Will Burst 1 on N12 kills Fallen Paladin, Paladin4, Drow, but misses Beatrice and Paladin3. Area writhes in tentacles and any creature that enters the area is slowed and takes 5 psychic damage. Attack Rolls, damage below...

Use Orb of Deception to reroute miss on Beatrice vs. Eithal, 18 vs. Will I think hits for 13. This damage should also affect the Ghost and grant Eithal a save, which I'll let her make. I think Eithal will be slowed as well, but perhaps not the ghost.

Move: Save vs. Sanity (1d20+10=23) on the button.

GM: Since Scarm and Eithal just have saving throws to make, I'll go ahead and roll those and post the next round. They both make their saves, with an 11 and a 16. (1d20=11;1d20=16)

With the destruction of the ghost, the dark cloud surrounding Eithal fades away into nothingness. She suddenly realizes that her enemies and allies have switched positions again. Why won't they stay still?
Scarm, likewise, shrugs off the confusion that had affected him. He already reasoned that Sir Moynifried couldn't be real, so he certainly could not have multiplied into a dozen versions of himself.

Yishim comes to a sudden realization: the shadow creature closest to Beatrice is no more real than the grasping shadows that he can conjure with a spell. He utterly convinces himself of this fact, and the shadow creature consequently disappears from view.

Two shadows remain among the attackers. They focus their attacks on Beatrice, but only one makes contact against her with its bludgeon.

[sblock=Beatrice]The last paladin shows no sign of fear, from you or from the loss of the battle. He says, "You will not escape justice! If I do not strike you down, then another of my order will!" He then strikes you again with a smiting blow.[/sblock]
[sblock=Jarel-karn]Yishim's shadow spell hits Eithal. Your "father" is right next to her. Already reeling from your attacks, he is then attacked by the shadowy tendrils of the spell. It is only now that you see the truth: this is not your father at all. It is a foul imitation of him; a dark shadow twisted vaguely into his shape.

As soon as you realize the truth, he fades from existence and leaves no trace of ever having been here.[/sblock]
[sblock=Damen]At Yishim's direction, tendrils of solid shadow reach out of the ground and assail your sister. She is grabbed and slammed hard into the Earth. She lies motionless.

A few seconds later, her body disappears, leaving no trace of her ever having been here.[/sblock]
[sblock=Yishim]The blood turns back into water. You were sure of what you saw just a moment ago, but now, you just can't be certain.[/sblock]
GM: Yishim's successful sanity check destroyed the Ghost.

Sanity check: The intense psychic energy radiating from this area is eroding your sanity. Once per round, you may attempt a DC 23 Insight check as a move action to not go insane.

[sblock=actions]Jarel-karn: The ghost was already in L16, so I teleported you to M16 instead.

Yishim's turn: Beatrice isn't in range of your attack, but her doggie is. I used the attack roll for her against the dog, which is a miss.
When the paladins are killed, they both Explode, making a final attack against all enemies in a burst 3. Only Yishim and Killer are hit, for 8 damage each.

Paladin 3: Shifts to M12. Smite Evil vs Beatrice hits Reflex 28 for 8 damage.

Brastrix: Takes 5 ongoing thunder damage. Fails to recharge Destabilizing Strike. Shifts to K14. Cutlass vs Beatrice misses AC 1. Makes his save vs ongoing damage.[/sblock]

OOC: Sorry I've been sluggish. Did Scarm actually make his attack while dominated? It looks as though he didn't.

Edit: Oh I see. The mind controllers are dayed.

"Harold" shakes his head vigorously. His feathers fluff and flare out, and he utters a high, piercing SHRIEK as he tears across the battlefield like a streak of lightning, slicing through the remaining shadows and ending up behind one. He slashes out with his knife, somehow disrupting the shadow-stuff, and then crouches slightly, taking a deep breath and smoothing his feathers back down again.

OOC: Guess the Paladin is dead?

Thanks for the CA!

First you drive the big girl and the bird crazy, now you try to talk me to death? I'll strike you down and become more powerful the YOU can possibly imagine! Beatrice shouts, charging at the last "Paladin" with surprising speed and grace for her age and lobbing his head off.

Take that! she says. Then she kneels down and stars to wipe her blade off on his clothes.

Now what dearies?

Jarel-karn look around to search his next target, his sword still crackling with lightning. Seeing no one, he tights his grip on his sword and suddenly slash the air while shouting his despair. An arc of lightning cut a limb of the nearby tree and as it fall, it pass an inch over Eithal's head before falling at Jarel-karn's feet. The genasi then fall on his knees and start to cry.

Beatrice strikes down the last shadow creature, which dissolves into nothingness under the force of her blow. In the aftermath of the battle, only one corpse is still visible: Kaz's. The elf's broken body lies half in the water and half on land.

Although the shadows have been destroyed, you're not out of danger yet. The cursed tree is still radiating powerful psychic energies, and you're standing right next to it. If you mean to escape this swamp with your minds intact, then you need to act - now.

GM: Combat's over! Good job all. I was getting worried for you near the end, especially when Scarm was about to start dropping area blasts on the party.

The end of the battle marks a milestone. Gain one action point. Don't worry about healing up quite yet; you'll be able to rest after you deal with the shadow magic. Taking multiple short rests before you do that would not be advisable. And now... back to the skill challenge.

Round 3: Neutralize the Shadow Magic!
Use whatever means you have to dispel the magic radiating from the tree.
Primary skills: Arcana. DC 23.

[sblock=skill challenge rules]You may use any of these skills: Arcana, Dungeoneering, Heal, History, Insight, Nature, Perception, or Religion. If you'd like to use a different skill, you need to have a compelling reason that makes it relevant to the challenge (and I still may impose a penalty to the check or disallow its use).

You have the following options during the skill challenge:

Bold Recovery: A player may spend an action point to reroll a skill check they have made. The player must take the result of the reroll.

Critical Success: A natural 20 on a skill check is an automatic success. In addition, the player gets one additional success.

Primary Skill: Every round, there will be one or two skills as the center point of the challenge. Players using that skill receive a +2 to their skill checks.

Unburdened: You may spend one healing surge and choose a skill that has an armor check penalty (such as endurance). For the rest of the skill challenge, you may ignore the armor check penalty for that skill. You may spend additional surges to select more skills.[/sblock]

Eithal pulls Kaz's body out of the water, "Oh Kayaz! Whattayah tryin' tah dew tew us." She rests for a moment and ponders the tree, pulsating with evil magic, wondering if, perhaps, the magic is bound to the tree itself.
OOC: Sorry. Didn't put it in the roll notes, but that was a Nature check.
