Jarel-karn finally stands up. Now the threat gone, he recover slowly his sense and finally realize what he has to do. He use his sword to draw a circle around him and sit down within the circle, his sword still on his knee.
He concentrates and gather his elemental magic to fight the shadow source, but he feels the source trying to fight back. Still shaken by the sight of his father, his will falter a moment but Jarel-karn takes a quick moment to refocus and gather all his strength. His body starts again to crackle with lightning. Feeling he got all the energy he can control, he break the circle around him, releasing the energy toward the shadow source.

"Harold" inspects the tree, but his lack of magical knowledge prevents him from seeing anything meaningful.
"Is this the source?" he asks nervously. "I don't see what is to be done. Perhaps we could simply chop it down?"

Damen continues to intermittently giggle as his tries to reorient himself. He shakes his head and then points to something about the tree. That's... unusual.

As the battle ends, arcana energy crackles around Yishim. His brief foray into insanity suddenly attunes him to the nature of the disease enveloping the land.
He's finally able to understand what's happening, and a few spells further shed light on the situation.
Jarel-Karn, I finally understand. I need to consider the powers from the standpoint of the disease, not as one of the unafflicted!

Damen spots a tiny hole in the tree trunk. From the dimensions of the marking and its depth, he skillfully determines that it was left by a blade being stabbed into the tree. Eithal, Jarel-karn, and Yishim focus all their concentration on this one spot, staring at it intently as they conjure an opposing magical force in an attempt to dispel the magic.
Despite the potency of the shadow spell, it begins to break down under the weight of the counterspell. The tree begins to shake, and great ruptures open up in the trunk as the clash of magic tears it asunder. One large branch is ripped off and falls next to Scarm, nearly crushing him. The ambient shadows nearby flicker unnaturally, growing into solid black masses and then fading away again.
With one final effort by the heroes, these manifestations are silenced and the spell finally fizzles away. Everyone in the party feels the psychic pressure lifting from their minds. Kaz was apparently not an illusion, and he is still a (dead) zombie. He is also carrying some rather valuable equipment. His friends in life refrain from salvaging from his corpse, but Beatrice takes an amulet similar to her own from him, and Damen finds a mask imbued with shadows when rummaging through his backpack.
The party rests easy now that the spell has been disrupted. Everyone takes some time to recover from the ordeal.

While the party is still resting, everyone suddenly hears footsteps approaching through the swampy water. A person comes into view from behind a thick set of bushes at least 100 feet away, not making any effort to hide their approach. As the figure approaches, you see that it is a female lizardfolk wearing a blue belted robe. She has a hefty mace tucked into her belt.
"Very interessting, you ssoftsskins are. Firsst you ssearch our home, but you do not take anything. And now you come here and rid me of that undead. Very strange, for invaderss..."
