[Adventure] Serpent's Skull: Souls for Smuggler's Shiv (DM: Mewness; Judge: THB)

[sblock=ooc]It's all over but the fluff text (Takahaan has +18 even without Kane's AP: +8 from his basic bonus, +2 heroic effort, +2 for Castile's aid, +2 for Hú Lí's aid, +2 for Aerys, and +2 for Jade).[/sblock]

With the assistance from his friends, Takahaan begins putting the campsite together. Following Hu Li's advice, the large dragonborn moves the resources around, and the shelter finally starts to take shape.

"It looks excellent, friends." he says, while working with great effort on lashing some of the wood together. "Tonight, we shall have dry rest. Jade, hand me those vines."

OOC: I'm acting like Kane didn't spend an AP, because it wasn't necessary. Is that alright?
Athletics Check: 1d20+18=22. Success! Thank you, guys, for the epic +18, and thank you, twilsemail, for the 4 roll. Your terrible luck (or Invisible Castle holding a grudge against you) has rubbed off on me ;P

"I believe we are done. Well done with that knotwork Takahaan." The Captain surveys the work the group has done and nods in satisfaction.

"What food do we have? Did anyone think to carry along any of that spider? I hear they taste of bacon. If we've only got what we've brought along, we may need to ration it out."

"As evening approaches, we'll have to sort out who's on guard duty. My men and I will, of course, be patrolling the entire night in shifts."

OOC: Nah, It's ENWorld's roller. It hates me lots. Except, apparently, when I'm rolling to hit PCs...

Despite the heat, their exhaustion, and the insistent attentions of biting insects, the group manages to construct a campsite that is more than adequate. Sasha and the Irregulars have taken the effort to raise the shelters a little bit off the ground, so that they will not get flooded by the afternoon rains, and the Pict has thoughtfully lined the gaps in the walls with some sort of plant sap that seems to serve as a natural insect repellent.

“Bacon!” exclaims Sasha in response to Dartmoor’s remarks about the taste of spider. “Are you sure they're even edible?” She seems simultaneously repulsed and intrigued.

Aerys and Jade, having little expertise in such matters, have occupied themselves by fetching and carrying at Takahaan’s request. When they shift the stone that Hú Lí chose, they uncover what appears to be a large bone half-buried in the dirt. Upon close inspection, it turns out to be a carved bone flute. Though filled with dirt, it appears to be in excellent condition.

The light is fading as the shipwreck survivors pronounce themselves satisfied with their work. When it is finally done, Gelik steps up to admire the campsite. “Not that I wouldn’t vastly prefer a solid house and a soft bed, but this really doesn’t look so bad. I’m amazed that we put this together so quickly.”

Aerys seems not only exhausted but shaky. She opens one of the jars of wine and sinks to the ground with it, taking a large swig. “‘We’?” she says. “Did you contribute to the effort while I wasn’t looking? I’ve half a mind to let you sleep outside with the bugs.”

“What was I supposed to do? I’m little! I can’t carry big burdens around like--”

“You’re as big as any four of Dartmoor’s warriors,” Aerys snorts.

“Well, I’m no woodsman! I’ve barely stepped off a paved road in my life! I’d just have gotten lost or--in the way. He didn’t do a thing”--Gelik jerks his head at Ishirou--“and I don’t see you telling him to sleep outside. But perhaps you care to impose only on the unimposing.”

Aerys responds to Gelik’s gesture by looking around as though she had completely forgotten Ishirou’s existence; she hardly seems to hear the rest of the speech. Taking another generous gulp of wine, she calls out, “Hey, head-in-the-clouds, any chance of you ever helping us out instead of sitting there and staring like a dead fish?”

“No,” replies Ishirou softly, without turning his head. “But I will sleep outside if you wish.”

Both Aerys and Gelik seem dumbstruck by this response.

GM: Skill challenge successful! You now have a permanent (or at least semi-permanent) camp. You can take extended rests here. There’s also Captain Kovack’s logbook to be gone through, if anyone wants to do that. It’s now about 8 pm and getting dark (sunrise will be at 6 am). You should indeed decide how many watches you want and who will be on them. You can allocate NPCs to watches as well.

Oh, and it’s OK to assume Kane didn’t spend the AP (although it probably won’t be important).

"Absolutely! At least, the smaller ones do. I'm not sure about their larger cousins." The Captain kicks mud off his boots. "Perhaps we should go and fetch one?"

The Pict nods appreciatively at the idea.

OOC: Mewness, any chance a Nature check would tell me if they're edible? The bacon thing is true (at least on this side of the books). Spiders can be delicious when cooked properly.

Also, can the Irregulars be interspersed with the watches? They're not down at all on perception checks while the Captain "trances."

Settling down after the intensive work the group had done putting the shelter together, Takahaan collects his thoughts and relaxes a little. "We need lookouts. I will watch over the campsite for an hour or two, as long as I can rest some. I'm exhausted."

Looking towards Kane, who had persevered through being trapped in massive spiders' webbing, a trudge through the downpour, and had put a lot of effort into the campsite, Takahaan nods at him and cracks a half-smile. "Kane, rest the whole night. You have gone through enough mud-piles and spiderwebs for any two men's lifetimes." Nodding again at his new companion, Takahaan now stares into the campfire, lost deep in thought.

OOC: Mewness, what type of skill check would the logbook require to read thoroughly?

GM: I would think the spiders are perfectly edible (Sasha is just expressing the usual prejudices).

No special skill check for the logbook. It just takes time.

OK for the Irregulars to be "on watch" all night.

"No one need sleep outside," Hú Lí says. "The shelter is large, and we are all weary. There will be many chances for all of us to work, and we will need everyone if we are to leave this island." She turns to Gelik and Ishirou. "Do either of you have any skills that may help us leave this place? I know that Aerys does not like it as it has an evil reputation, and I can not say that the spiders have given me any fondness for it either. Let us eat and share some wine, and then we may rest and make plans. In the meantime, I have found a flute made of bone. It seems odd to find an instrument in such a place. There have been others here before us."

Hú Lí picks up the bone flute, taps it, shakes the loose dirt off of it, uses some leaves to give it an initial cleaning, then finally runs a silk handkerchief through it to remove the remaining dust. She gives an experimental tootle on it. It has a different tone than the bamboo article she had been using, but she seem satisfied and places it beneath her robes.

Noriaki manages not to help in actually building the shelter, taking the time instead to clean off his swordblade. He looks at the shelter with a blank face before turning to Ishirou. "Don't be silly, Ishirou. You are not common, and can not be reasonably expected to perform a commoner's work. I myself only happened to give aid incidentally in the course of performing a routine acrobatics training exercise. But perhaps you could help me to decipher the captain's logbook tonight? Such a task is more befitting our learned natures."

Shortly after asking, Noriaki grabs Kane's attention. "Earlier you mentioned you might be able to help with my clothes. What luck to find a tailor in this desolate place! I will take you on for the work, if you like."

OOC: Sorry for the sparse posting. Busy week on my part. Should be calming down, though.

Jbear, I think you have hit on the way to make yourself indispensable to Noriaki :D

“There is no way to leave,” says Ishirou. “I have waited for thirty years to see my home again. Now, I never shall.”

“Don’t say that,” says Sasha. “It has to be possible to escape somehow.” She glances at Noriaki, smiling.

Aerys rolls her eyes. “We’re trying to survive. Except this fellow here, who’s good enough to accept any amount of labor on his behalf and never lift a finger in return.”

“I am already dead,” says Ishirou quietly.

Ishirou makes no response to this.

[sblock=Insight 17 (15 for people from Kingdom of Jade) (active or passive)]Ishirou actually seems quite stung by Aerys's disapproval, although he conceals it in the typical Jadeite manner. And Noriaki's remarks seem to have stung a bit as well, although it isn't clear why.[/sblock]
OOC: LOL at trying to employ Kane as a tailor.
