The new Player's Handbook contains 12 character classes, each with 4 subclasses, making 48 in total.
  • Barbarian: Path of the... Berserker, Wild Heart, World Tree, Zealot.
  • Bard: College of... Dance, Gamour, Lore, Valor.
  • Cleric: Life, Light, Trickery, War domains.
  • Druid: Circle of the... Land, Moon, Sea, Stars.
  • Fighter: Battle Master, Champion, Eldritch Knight, Psi Warrior.
  • Monk: Warrior of... Mercy, Shadow, The Elements, The Open Hand.
  • Paladin: Oath of... Devotion, Glory, The Ancients, Vengeance.
  • Ranger: Beast Master, Fey Wanderer, Gloom Stalker, Hunter.
  • Rogue: Arcane Trickster, Assassin, Soulknife, Thief.
  • Sorcerer: Aberrant Sorcery, Clockwork Sorcery, Draconic Sorcery, Wild Magic.
  • Warlock: Archfey Patron, Celestial Patron, Fiend Patron, Great Old One Patron.
  • Wizard: Abjurer, Diviner, Evoker, Illusionist.

Welcome to 5e D&D, where the solution to the complaints that everyone felt like a spellcaster in 4e was to actually make nearly everyone a spellcaster or a mage. 🤷‍♂️

You know, if you don't want a thread derailed into edition wars, maybe it would be helpful if you didn't bring up 4E everywhere possible. Because it seems like you're almost hoping to start another fight. :unsure:

I always assumed it's for celestials that aren't powerful enough to grant magic for a cleric or paladin, and how I've always played it off for my players. Archangels, dead gods with a vestige of power, etc.
I see your point (and others have made the same) but warlocks are not actually less powerful than clerics. It's more a "what style of magic do I want to grant" thing than there really being a good reason to grant one kind or another? And if you want a powerful servant whose magic depends on their loyalty to your cause, clerics and paladins fit the bill better than warlock.

But yes, chaotic good celestials, vestiges, and even gods who need deniability and hide their true nature from the PC are all potential sources. I suppose all alignments of Powers love a good eldritch blast.

I'm just made a bit grumpy by the homogenization of classes... if you want divine magic you can be a favored soul sorcerer or a celestial warlock... why be a cleric? If you want to be a grimdark warrior of the night you can be a hexblade, a rogue, or a paladin (!!). Personally I am OK with paladins representing a special kind of power that you can only obtain by absolute devotion to Good, and warlocks being a kind of power that you can only get by unwholesome bargains... because these are game design choices that say something about the nature of the fantasy world you're playing in.

And I am totally OK with the idea of some classes being antithetical: Paladin / Warlock multiclass being forbidden despite kewl synergy because you simply can't get one source of power without forever locking out the other.
 


I completely agree and have also completely given up. Spell slots are the One Mechanic To Rule Them All.

Easy to balance the classes this way, at the cost of making them all feel the same. :-(
Augh... spell slots are a terrible mechanic.

Might as well play 4e... at least Martials get to be interesting.
 



I like it, but I hope additional classes for the cleric and the wizard are released soon. Both are so attached to the concepts of domains and schools of magic that it's weird creating a cleric of Mystra, for example, and having to fit it in some of these four domains.
Agreed. It is hard to create a cleric for all the different deities even with the current crop of domain options. Like the devs have suggested Nature as the default domain for a bunch of deities for which it makes no sense (like the wintry Auril or the various sea gods who aren't storm-themed).

If I had my druthers, each deity would have their own domain, but that would be too unwieldy, I know. Maybe just make it like 4e where the different deities granted a feat or two (or however it worked) and have the cleric subclasses not be domain themed. Instead, you could have them be the templar armored warrior cleric or the scholarly unarmored friar cleric or whatever.

I realize this ship has sailed and it's too late but one can still dream ...
