D&D General Bought a brick of the 50th Anniversary minis :(

That really sucks. I'm really sorry they put this together so badly. I'm not sure I've seen Games Workshop have deals that frustrating.

Ever since Nike did their limited editions, it's you have to be careful when buying stuff. They package things for collectors, scalpers, and whales and make the average customer buy it on eBay. You know how Stanley drink cups have been super in style? Guess where the limited edition guy from Nike went when he left Nike.

It's really awful. It's maximized wealth extraction, leveraged with FOMO. It allows the producer to make something that exploits the customer and relies on the existence of a robust secondary market backed by the Internet to function at a very basic level.

WotC has been pretty bad with it. WotC has Secret Lairs and the 30th Magic Anniversary set. Even arguably the D&D FLGS covers qualify, but at least those are kind of a good cause. From my memory WizKids has been bad with it, too, but I don't buy their products anymore so I don't know. I do remember the HeroClix MechWarrior was an absolute nightmare to get what you wanted, but when I played the communities were pretty small and nobody was buying solely for resale.

I have yet to see the FLGS covers at my local FLGS. It's all the normal covers since release. Last weekend they had like 8+ copies all normal covers.

True, but I don't have my degree in "Understanding IKEA Instructions" yet. I hear it's a graduate level. ;)
Maybe Ikea should farm out the instructions to the Japanese. I've built a lot of Japanese models (my other major hobby) with the instruction entirely in Japanese (a language I can't speak, let alone read) and still had no issue understanding the instructions in the slightest.

I think I found a link to the guy who does the IKEA instructions!

So on topic, I do feel for the OP not getting anything useful. Personally I only ever bought a pack or two before I gave up and started going to sites that just sold the individual minis. Might not be satisfying to some people, but I'm not a collector I just want minis I can use for my game.

On the other hand, if you're into buying the boxes for the collector/gambling aspect then you have to accept a certain level of risk. I wish there was an option to just order what you want directly from the company, even if it was a slightly higher cost per mini. Then again I don't play MtG either in large part because there's too much randomness when purchasing decks.

The store around here gets a couple. They don't last long; I think most of them go to pre-orders. I've never gotten one, but I don't make it over there very often.

But there sure are a lot on eBay.
