Since they never made the final episode of the cartoon, where the characters return home... and they are adults in their movie cameo... does this mean they've been trapped in the world of D&D since the 80s?
In the original script they have the option to go home after "defeating" Venger and his master but choose to keep adventuring (apparently to other worlds). In the fan animated and voiced version of that script (found on Youtube and its excellent) they all decide to go home except for one of them.

I don't know, that could make for an interesting story!

A bunch of teenagers from the 80s, stuck in the 2020s. They would then try to get back to the "realms of Dungeons & Dragons" where things make sense!! :)

Heh. The culture shock would be hilarious, though one could also play up the personal tragedy. Any other friends or siblings who didn't go to the amusement park with the gang would be middle-aged, possibly with teenagers of their own. Parents would be elderly or even dead. And of course, the kids themselves are a notable missing-persons cold case (that probably has whole podcasts about it in the 2020s). The ride that can potentially get them back to the Realm was probably closed with extreme prejudice after six kids just up and vanished in the middle of it -- and if not, surely it's been scrapped or remodeled in the decades since.

And of course, after forty years, they likely have strong connections in the fantasy world to get back to as well. Even spouses, kids, and/or grandkids.

There's a comic book series called DIE (with an associated RPG whose crowdfunding is about to ship) that basically functions on this premise.
