Kellie Waymire who played Ensign Cutler passed away the 13th of November in 2003.

That sucks, I liked her. She was cute and pleasant to watch on screen.

Not too bad, but otherwise typical for Trek. One glaring plot hole, why did the ship's sensors not indicate these nut jobs have explosive devices in their bodies? Though that's not too surprising given the number of dangerous substances sensors can never detect on Star Trek....

It was some sort of "bio-explosive" they said, and they wouldn't allow the doctor to do a scan on them. Pretty weak, but then again, so was the whole episode.

I taped this episode, and just got around to watching it last night. I kept waiting for it to get better, holding out hope. Yes, the similarities to current Muslim extremists and suicide bombers was pretty obvious. Still, I was hoping they would do something meaningful or insightful with the religious factions idea.

Then came the scene where they disclosed what caused this great religious schism -- one group believed it took the Makers 9 days to create the Spheres, the other group believed it took 10 days !?!?!

WTF!?!?!

That's pretty poor. I know they were intentionally making it something trivial, to show that the whole schism was stupid, but still. That's really bad writing. They took a serious subject, and turned it into a joke. I was so pissed, I almost threw my Hot Pocket at the TV screen.

Personally, that gave me vibes of "Green vs. Purple," the Drazi internal conflict. Of course, that was done a lot better, but then again one can't expect Enterprise to show B5 quality.

Perhaps. Like I said above, it was somewhat reminiscent of Gulliver's Travel's. In particular, I'm referring to the first part of the book with the war between Lilliput and Blemfuscu (or however it's spelled). The two little nations were fighting a war over, IIRC, the proper way of cracking an egg (it's been a while since I've read it). In reality, Swift was mocking the constant warfare between England and France in his day. I felt that the disagreement here over the number of days in which these spheres were created was meant in a similar vein, mocking some of the trivial differences which spark religious conflicts.

Besides, any fool would realize those spheres were way to big to complete in just a week and a half -- especially if there are supposed to be thousands of them.

There's also the whole cat-people schism in Red Dwarf, where one faction thought the hats were supposed to be blue, and the other thought they were red. And of course, it turns out that Lister had always meant for them to be green.

I believe that the tide of weak writing is beginning to take its toll on this stalwart fan. So much more could have been done (and not done in the case of the pregnacy muddying) with this episode that I find it hard to defend it. They truly need to begin taking some risks and not just keep trying to press hot buttons, if they wish for me to not give up on them...
