Enterprise 01-14-04

Ok, writing this up during the Angel commercial break.

God, this episode sucked.

So Enterprise doesn't keep backups? And they can't just shoot the bloody nose-aliens before they activate the explosives? Why were they even wandering the ship in the first place, if there were full safety measures?

File this one under crap.

Gotta agree, this was pretty bad. It had potential... it could have been an interesting look at the division between science and religion. I thought that's where it was going.

Then it jumped tracks right into the cliche "aliens take over the ship" story, added a blatant Muslim extremist angle (religious fanatic suicide bombers), and managed to even throw abortion into the scenario.

Yes, it's laughable that Ent. doesn't have some kind of backup system. :P

The transporter trick was good, though. :)

I thought some other things were just stupid. T'Pal forgot how to do a neck pinch? The female marine had to be saved by someone else? The alien just 'knew' how to use the weapon systems? Archer "instant messaging" Phlox? And the doctor conveniently having access to the environmental controls right in sickbay?

Gah.

Wow. I'm a bit stunned by some news that has just come to my attention. I imagine I missed it because it happened not long after my own mother passed last year, but Kellie Waymire who played Ensign Cutler passed away the 13th of November in 2003.

I missed half the episode ... but judging by other comments I guess it isn't a bad thing that I missed what I did...

Couple thoughts...

1) To me, I kept seeing obvious hinting at the whole radial Islamic militant thing. However, I just watched the show thinking I was reading too much into it and that the parrell was coincidental (my personal life keeps me more involved in that sort of thing so when I encounter it in entertainment I like to give the benefit of the doubt and presume I'm just reading too much into it). But seeing that someone else saw the same allusion... well, then, I'm less impressed by the episode by sheer fact that it was purposely done with that sort of reference (or at least the writers were not concious enough to realize how blatant they were being).

2) The above aside... I thought a couple things were too easy ... (as mentioned, the environmental control feed running through sickbay being a good example)

3) It was an okay story... since I have not seen any others from this season (and missed half the episode), I didn't understand the whole background or talk of spheres and what not... but I'll presume all that made some sense :D

.... that's all i have to say for now I guess.

I haven't seen any this season. It was just a quirk of fate that I was home at the right hour. *sigh*

So, the Xindi destroied their homeworld...and this race had their final battle some eight months before. I suppose we're seeing how lucky Enterprise's Earth was to even make it to the point where _outsiders_ are trying to blow up their planet. Plenty seem to do it themselves, then move on.

I will cast a vote for "terrible," agreeing with reasons above...especially the lack of back-ups (!!).

I think the writers are conscious of what they're doing. This whole season is about a mission into a distant region to find a Weapon of Mass Destruction. Oooh! *claps hands giddily* I wonder if Archer will find one!

I'm just about done with this show. It's turning into a load of malarkey.

These are the same people who claim it was just a coincidence that the Xindi attack on Earth came across as very similar to the Sept. 11 attacks.

It just feels like the creators of this series are taking current events and trying to make stories out of them... by using the most blatant, bludgeoning method possible to get their own opinions on said events across.

It's like they're trying to emulate Roddenberry's "morality play" episodes, and doing a very bad job of it.

Enterprise - "Chosen Realm"

On a side note, does it seem that they use the log/voice overs a lot less in Enterprise than they did with all previous series?

Not too bad, but otherwise typical for Trek. One glaring plot hole, why did the ship's sensors not indicate these nut jobs have explosive devices in their bodies? Though that's not too surprising given the number of dangerous substances sensors can never detect on Star Trek....

Ending of course was ripped off from the TOS episode "Let that Be Your Last Battlefield", though more dramatic, since we were shown the devastation. Also the religious conflict was as farcical as the war the Lilliputians fought in Gulliver's Travels.

Archer's deception with the transporter was a good touch.
