I got a job!

First Post
On Friday, I was offered an assistant professor position (tenure track) at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. I took it!

What this means (in no certain order):
1. Ten years of post-secondary education have finally paid off.
2. I'll be close to my family.
3. My wife and I will get to move, buy a house, and do all those other fun things one only dreams about while toilng in graduate school.
4. Barring me screwing up royally, I'll get to spend the rest of my life in a job I like. :)
5. I'll have to leave Cthulhu's Librarian and my other VA gaming buddies. :(
6. I'll soon be looking for a game in the greater Charlotte, NC area.
7. I'll soon be soliciting advice on Charlotte, Rock Hill, buying a house, and all sorts of other topics.

I just wanted to share the happiness. :D

I've been waiting for you to post something! I didn't want to spill the news for you. Now remember, you're not losing your gaming buddies here, we are just going to have fewer (but longer) game sessions when we see you. And you'll be closer than I am to the NC Game Days (by about 40 miles), so I expect to see you there as well.

Anyway, CONGRATULATIONS NAKIA!
We'll miss you here in C'ville.

Congratulations! Makes me want to go to grad school now. I am looking for a job, and your good news has cheered me up.

So, what will you be teaching?

Congrats!

My best friend from high school lives in Charlotte. Beautiful town. Great weather. I'm too much of a Midwesterner to ever leave Iowa, but Charlotte would be on the list if I had to (that and Portland, OR).

Glad I could help!

I'll be teaching in the school of education. Mostly I'll be teaching foundations of education, which, at Winthrop, is called "Teachers, Students, and Society" I think. I am finishing up my PhD in Foundations of Education with a focus in philosophy of education.

And, just to clairify, Winthrop is in South Carolina. I'll be living in Rock Hill, which is 20 minutes south of Charlotte.

Congratulations Nakia! And from your list conrgats on finding a wonderful job that also gives those extra special perks- like being close to family and liking your job :)

That is indeed good news. And good that it is so close to home. One of the people I used to game with had a doctor's degree in "paleobotany" (you can't make this kind of stuff up, folks). Yes, that's right, fossilized plants. And she was looking all over the country at the various colleges for a job. I think she was somewhat selective in the acedemic environment, and the location, but it was still very hard. She still hasn't found anything, and has been looking for at least 3 years now. It's also very cyclical. Colleges only hire twice per year, and the second time is not as large as the first. So, there' s very small window.

So, indeed, congratulations!
