D&D 5E (IC) Fitz's Folly

"Indeed," says Miss Imogen, as her eyes water in spite of herself. She wipes them with her sleeve.

"Let's not waste any time."

How are the cartographers doing?

Chrysagon frowned while looking down to the swamps. "It's safer to avoid any encounter, but..." Chrysagon paused a couple of second, thinking.

"I'm not in charge here. But if I was Captain Breakbones's Scoutmaster, I would like to know who are those guys and what are they doing at three hours walk from the camp."

Chult/Camp Vengeance
Afternoon
Round 0

Dellrak set to work quickly skinning and quartering the raptors, taking the good meat and leaving the offal for the scavengers. They didn’t have time or need for the full effort of using all parts of the carcass. Finding one of the broad-leafed trees, he wrapped the meat in green leaves to keep it fresh longer, though he was shivering and could barely walk by the time they got to camp, his vision blurry.

“Ugh, I hate this bluidy place,” Dellrak complained as the native guides started a fire. He didn’t even complain much when given mud to slather over his skin to protect from the bugs.

Talk turned to the strange figures seen pulling down branches from trees. “I s’pose it wuildnae ‘urt t’ sneak on up an’ take a gander,” he said. “Dunnae ‘ae t’ make contact. They’re close enough they might see the fire an’ smoke anyway.”

They were only a few miles away, but it took the group two hours to arrive at a sheltered spot not far from where the creatures had been seen. They were being cautious and there were many obstacles along the way.

"Should we approach as a group, in case of overwhelming threat, or just a few of us to have a look and return?" asked the Scoutmaster, happy to share in group decisions in spite of his nominal authority.

"A bit of a loner, is he?" chuckled the Scoutmaster quietly to the others as Harb disappeared without a word.

Harb crept forward a few hundred yards until he found himself waist-deep in some water and behind a stand of reeds. He watched as the creatures busied about, removing branches from the trees. They had vaguely human faces, but their heads and bodies were covered in a thick red shell and their hands were oversized claws.

Most surprisingly, though was that they spoke clearly to each other in a language that Harb recognised as a dialect of the Chultan human language, very similar to what Qawasha or Kasqa spoke. Harb was by no means fluent in the language, but he knew the basic greetings, yes and no, and a few other simple phrases should the need arise.

Harb studied the scene for a few minutes, attempting to discern the purpose of their actions before slipping away to report to the others.

He did his best to repeat some of the more important instructions to Qawasha hoping their guide could decipher their meaning.

OOC: Int roll to memorize and repeat: [roll0]

Returning to the group, Harb reported what he'd seen and heard. Qawasha's eyes grew wide, "The Aldani! The people that the Basin is named for. They have not been seen in a hundred years or more and were said to have died away. They were once a human tribe who lived in the area, but were cursed by Ubtao for catching freshwater lobster to extinction. They now bear a hybrid form with the animal they once destroyed."

He listened to Harb's attempt to recall some of their words and it was Kasqa who discerned their intentions, "They have learned the error of their ways. They are simply gathering wood from the trees in a sustainable manner. By taking those branches in such a way, they will have fuel and building supplies while encouraging the tree to grow new branches as shoots."

Qawasha nodded. As a member of the Emerald Enclave, he approved wholeheartedly. "They are known to be a shy people, but perhaps we could speak to them. They have never been said to make war."
