Knightfall's World of Kulan Campaign Development Thread (Last Update: Jul 16/03)

Updated thread!

I'm updating this thread again to provide a more detailed description of the new gods created for my world, as well as alternate versions of the well-known gods that I've included in my Divinity War story hour.

This thread is now considered a work in progress.

Cheers!

I know this isn't a thread you update often, but just so it doesn't slip back too far, I thought I'd keep an eye on it!

Friendly bump while you're healing. I have neck problems myself, and computers are the worst culprit for making them worse.

Take care of yourself!

Dragons of the Balance

As noted previously on this thread, Harqual Dragons aren't like other dragons on other worlds or even other continents on Kulan.

Harqual dragons are almost always neutral in alignment, whether it be LN, NG, N, NE, or CN. Those Harqual dragons that wander from these alignments are considered rouge dragons and a threat to the Balance.

Each type of dragon has one individual amongst its species, who acts as the voice for that species and is known as the Majestic (i.e. Majestic Green).

These Majestics are allies to the druids and ranger of Harqual, even the evil ones - for even evil can be said to play a part in the Balance. Or at least as much as good, chaos, and law do.

Listed below are the typical dragons found on Harqual and the types of alignments they are restricted to as Dragons of the Balance.

The Year of the Return, 749 N.C.

Ok, I'm cut & pasting most of this from a word document so don't worry, I'm not hurting myself by typing too much.

This is set in the current year of my campaign (see World of Kulan Story Hour). What I've detailed in the story hour is still happening in 748 N.C. but since this deals with what's happening on Harqual "away from the PCs, it shouldn't give away too much about that story (which is on hiatus anyway).

Make sure you read the section, several posts ago, on the Calendars of Harqual otherwise this might not make as much sense.

I'd like to get some feedback on this plot timeline so I can improve it and add new ideas. Of course, any fellow EN Worlder who wishes to glean some campaign ideas from this plotline is welcome to it.

YEAR OF THE RETURN (749 N.C., 1001 D.W., 2459 COS.)

Anon* (1st month)

1. Fireday

The city of Tattenger reappears in the Storm Jungle after being trapped for 1001 years on an unknown demiplane. Due to the thousands of years of barbarism mortals forgot the knowledge of the tabaxi’s banishment. They are only remembered as a strange legend told by older priests of the pantheon.

A young barbarian priest of Cronn, living in Twilight Valley, is shown the true nature of the tabaxi through dreams sent to him by the Lord of the North. The young priest tries to convince his elders of the truth. Unable to sway them, the young priest sets of on a journey to warn the rest of Harqual of the return of the tabaxi and prepare them for the wrath of Tu, the tabaxi’s evil god. (He changes his name to Taith-El or Teller of the Past.)

12. Earthday

Taith-El leaves Twilight Valley, heading south towards the cities of the dwarves of the Kingdom of the Greystones.

14. Seaday

Tabaxi soldiers attempt to lay siege to Anthmoor on the southern tip of the Storm Peninsula. The city’s defenders, including its powerful sorcerers, repel the tabaxi with ease.

18. Earthday

A tabaxi army moves up the River of Sa, into the Monarchy of Avion, sacking the city-state of Valora, taking half its population as slaves.

24. Earthday

In Avion, the city of Ilasi is attacked by the tabaxi. Several of the Monarchy’s Royal Paladins, dedicated to protecting their country, die repelling the assault.

27. Windday

Taith-El arrives at the village of Stonehelm in the Greystone Mountains and petitions to speak with the village’s Defender. His request is granted and he tells the Defender of the dream sent to him by Cronn. The Defender is skeptical but ensures the young barbarian-priest that he will inform the local Thanes of the tabaxi threat. The Defender suggests that he travel to Milo and seek an audience with the High Thane of the Stone Fists and the High Priests of Moradin.

28. Starday

In Avion, the queen, Lady Felicia the Third, learns of the attack on her people in the south, through a Sending spell cast by the city’s governor, Francis Willowright.

In the Greystone Mountains, Taith-El continues his journey heading for the dwarven capital city of Milo.

29. Moonsday

The tabaxi attack the city of Ilasi again, nearly breaching the walls. Lady Felicia, in Avion City, magically sends a message to her ally in Onaway, Lord Than LaMarche, for aid after learning of the second assault on Ilasi from Governor Willowright. LaMarche agrees to help Avion against this new threat, sending three warships patrolling the Sword Gulf, near Ilasi, to help the city’s population.

30. Earthday

Lord LaMarche, of Onaway, sends a message to the commander of the warships near Ilasi Sir William Taffen, through a Sending spell, which states the need of the citizens of Ilasi against the tabaxi. Sir Taffen immediately turns his ships towards Ilasi, at full sail.

Year of the Return (cont.)

As I go through the months for this plot timeline, if anyone has any cool ideas for unique events or holidays then feel free to chime in.

Zealot* (2nd month)

2. Windday

The Onan warships arrive at Ilasi and find the city under siege. The combined forces of Avion and Onaway quickly rout the tabaxi using excellent tactics and sorcery. The tabaxi retreat back into the Storm Jungle. Governor Willowright and the citizens of Ilasi greet Sir Taffen, as a hero.

Taith-El arrives at Milo and petitions to speak to the High Thane. His request is refused and he is ordered to leave the kingdom of the dwarves. Dejected, Taith-El leaves Milo, heading for Fruen in the Kingdom of Thallin.

3. Starday

Lady Felicia requests Lord LaMarche, through a Sending spell, to setup a combined garrison at Ilasi in order to protect both countries. He agrees wholeheartedly. LaMarche informs Sir Taffen through another Sending that his warships are assigned to Ilasi until further notice.

4. Moonsday

Event: Spring Equinox

7. Seaday

In Ilasi, the Avion-Onaway garrison project is started. Commander Taffen is responsible for the city’s defense by sea, and Governor Willowright is responsible for the city’s defense by land.

10. Moonsday

Taith-El arrives in the small halfling community of Barrow’s Field. He tells their elders of the dream he had and they see the wisdom of his words. Truly the Lord of the North has touched this young barbarian-priest. The elders suggest that Taith-El go to Silverleaf before visiting the Kingdoms of the Eastern Shores. Several younger halflings pledge to go with Taith-El to help prepare Harqual against the tabaxi.

11. Earthday

A small band of tabaxi, who are quickly repelled by the new garrison’s forces, attacks Ilasi again. However, several of the builders working on the new garrison are either killed or taken as slaves.

Taith-El leaves Barrow’s Field with eight halfling companions that have decided to dedicate themselves to him and Cronn. Taith-El leads them towards Silverleaf.

17. Earthday

The tabaxi raid the southeastern coast of the Storm Peninsula, attacking both the city of Hutmallia and the city of Tallawan. They capture hundreds of humans, halflings and elves during the raid, taking them back into their jungle home to become slaves. The lucky ones are sacrificed to their evil god.

21. Starday

The tabaxi raid several small communities on the northwestern coast of the Storm Jungle. Dozens of isolated communities are destroyed and the inhabitants bound in chains and irons – dragged into the jungles by the hundreds. The smoke from the burning communities can be seen for hundreds of miles to the north at Ilasi.

25. Seaday

In Ilasi, the first permanent structures of the garrison are completed just in time to repel a huge tabaxi invasion force. Loses are minimum but Governor Willowright worries that the next force will overpower her soldiers.

26. Windday

Taith-El and his halfling followers arrive in Silverleaf, the Silver Elven City of the Kingdom of the Silver Leaves. The barbarian-priest tells Menkhar Silversun, the High One of Silverleaf, of his god sent dream. The High One tells the young priest that he had heard rumors of a city appearing somewhere in the south. It must be the city of the tabaxi that Taith-El was warned of by Cronn. Silversun and Taith-El pray together in the Temple of Corellon together for the entire day, seeking the Elf God's consul.

27. Starday

At dawn, Silversun and Taith-El both receive the same warning from Corellon. Tu is once again planning to conquer Harqual for his people. Taith-El is warned not to go further south than Onaway by the Elf Lord. No reason is given for this but the barbarian-priest accepts it as the will of Cronn. News spreads through the elven lands of this new threat. Hundreds of silver elves flock to Silverleaf to meet this godtouched barbarian-priest of Cronn. Many of them pledge to follow him in his quest to warn Harqual.

28. Moonsday

Event: Meteorite shower north of the Greystone Mountains.

Silversun contacts Lord LaMarche of Onaway to tell him of the tabaxi threat. He is shocked to learn that both Onaway and Avion have already had contact with the tabaxi. Taith-El insists that he must go to Onaway and confer with Lord LaMarche. Dozens of elves go with him and his halfling followers.

Year of the Return (cont.)

Sialic* (3rd month)

1. Seaday

The southern communities of the Monarchy of Avion, closest to the Storm Jungle, remain on constant alert for more tabaxi activity. No word has come from Nasundria, in the east, for weeks. The queen worries that the city might be lost.

5. Earthday

Event: A comet appears, which is named Ptah’s Star by the priests of the God of Travelers.

6. Fireday

Avion and Onaway send two diplomatic envoys into the Storm Jungle to try and reason with the tabaxi.

8. Windday

The garrison at Ilasi is finally completed. Patrols along the edge of the Storm Jungle can find no trace of the tabaxi, yet several are lost in the first full day of deployment.

10. Moonsday

Lady Felicia sends a rider with a message to the city of Nasundria.

12. Fireday

Taith-El and his followers arrive in Onaway and are immediately brought before Lord LaMarche. The barbarian-priest shares his dream, from Cronn, with Lord LaMarche. Taith-El also tells the Onan lord that the envoys sent to the Storm Jungle will not come back. The tabaxi have sacrificed the two men to their evil god.

13. Seaday

Lord LaMarche magically contacts Lady Felicia in Avion and tells her of the barbarian-priest’s arrival and dream. She immediately sends an emissary to Onaway to meet with Taith-El.

14. Windday

News of the barbarian-priest’s dream spreads through the populace of Onaway. The citizens start to panic and rioting breaks out in the city, as well as the city of Onaco, down the coast.

15. Starday

Taith-El goes out amongst the populace of Onaway to calm them down. The charismatic priest preaches a steady hand and patient attitude and wins over many converts to Cronn’s faith. Many of the faithful start calling him Cronn’s Chosen. The local shrine to Cronn becomes a popular place to pray overnight. Unrest continues to be a problem in the city of Onaco, however.

17. Earthday

Lady Felicia’s emissary reaches Onaway and meets with Taith-El. The barbarian-priest’s prophetic dream from Cronn accounts the destruction of Valora and if preparations aren’t made all of the Monarchy of Avion and the lands of the Onan Territory as well. The envoy asks Taith-El to come with him and meet Lady Felicia in Avion. Taith-El tells him that cannot – that Corellon warned him that he must not go any further south then Onaway or disaster will befall them all. Taith-El assures the envoy that he would be honored to meet with Avion’s Great Lady, as he refers to her, but it would have to be in Onaway.

18. Fireday

In Avion, Lady Felicia receives a disturbing package from the tabaxi, her envoy’s heart in a leather bag! She faints from the shock.

In Onaway, the queen’s emissary starts his journey back to Avion to tell her of his meeting with the charismatic barbarian-priest. Several of Taith-El’s loyal followers go with him, as an escort, and to spread his words amongst the populace of Onaco, in order to calm that city.

19. Seaday

Lady Felicia declares open warfare with the tabaxi of the Storm Jungle. (Lord LaMarche follows suit two days later.)

20. Windday

In Avion, Lady Felicia watches the horizon hopeful for any sign or message from her allies in Nasundria.

22. Moonsday

In Avion, Lady Felicia’s emissary arrives back from Onaway and recounts his meeting with Taith-El. To her surprise, the escort of followers proclaimed that they were sent to ensure the Great Lady’s protection – it was Taith-El’s will. They would stand by her side from now on as loyal guards of honor in Cronn’s name. Lady Felicia was touched by the barbarian-priest’s concern for her welfare and started to make plans to go to Onaway and meet this young man.

24. Fireday

Lady Felicia starts her journey to Onaway with a full escort of her soldiers and Taith-El’s followers Cronn’s Pride, as they now call themselves.

26. Windday

Lady Felicia’s caravan is attack by a tabaxi war party and several of her closest advisors are killed. Several members of Cronn’s Pride die, heroically, protecting the Monarchy’s queen.

28. Moonsday

Lady Felicia’s caravan arrives in Onaway. She immediate goes to see Lord LaMarche and meet this barbarian-priest. Lord LaMarche informs her that…

“Taith-El is currently preaching at the new Temple of Cronn being built where the Lord of the North’s shrine use to be. His devotion is unlike anything I have ever seen before.”

Intrigued, Lady Felicia goes in secret to the new temple and listens to Taith-El preach the word of Cronn. She finds a barbaric, yet intelligent young man, quietly addressing Cronn’s new flock of followers.

“He speaks with such conviction, such passion… I must meet him.”

The Lady of Avion walks through the crowd, stopping near the simply wooden beach that Taith-El was sitting on. Taith-El noticed the woman approach and stopped speaking to the crowd. He immediately knew who she was, through the power of Cronn, and knelt before her on the ground like his god Cronn had done with Mirella in the beginning.

“Ask what you will of me, milady, I am your servant!”

Everyone present knew the words from the legend of Cronn and a murmur rose through the crowd. Lady Felicia was shocked, no one knew she was one of Mirella’s faithful. Yet to address her in this fashion left no doubt in her mind that this young barbarian-priest was chosen by Cronn himself. And she instantly knew the response she must give in return.

“No Taith-El, your destiny is not with me but with the land that gave you life. You are its master and slave, you must guard it against those that would destroy it.”

With that she left him. So great was his sorrow that he could not serve the lady, tears streamed from his eyes to dampen the ground. And thus, a great place of power was created in homage to both Cronn and Mirella. The two would never meet again, as Lady Felicia left for Avion that same day.

29. Earthday

The news of the tabaxi spreads out from the Onan Territories to the rest of the states of the Wild Plains, while rumors circulate through the Eastern Shores about trouble brewing in the southwest.

======================
* Sialic was the God of Revelry wo died during the early part of the Divinity War. Betrayed by a mortal friend to Vespin the God of Thieves and Assassins. Little is known of what became of the betrayer and his name is not spoken by the faithful of the North Gods.

Year of the Return (cont.)

Thorn* (4th month)

1. Seaday

An army of tabaxi and strange humanoids appears out of the Storm Jungle, laying siege to Anthmoor. The cities defenders hold off the attacking army but the tabaxi refuse to surrender or retreat. They camp several miles from the city, raiding the surrounding countryside for supplies and slaves.

2. Windday

Lady Felicia arrives back at Avion City and immediately tells her people of her encounter with Cronn’s Chosen. A new temple project is started, dedicated to the Lord of the North. Her advisors inform her there is still no word from Nasundria. She immediately sends out more riders.

3. Starday

Event: The Kingdom of Navirosov celebrates High-Heart, High King Jacard Winterknight’s birthday.

4 – 9. Moonsday - Starday

This week sees strange occurrences everywhere across the continent of Harqual, as a strange magical fog engulfs the land from the Isles of Ice in the far north to the Isle of Ghosts in Southern Harqual.

10. Moonsday

The magical fog lifts from the land on the 10th, leaving many questions to be answered. Like, what caused it and where did those strange mountains come from south of the Empire of Swords? :)

11. Earthday

Event: The comet, Ptah’s Star, leaves Kulanspace. (Note: The World of Kulan and Kulanspace are set in my Farspace Cosmology, which can be read at the official Spelljammer Fan Web Site – Beyond the Moons.)

A small scouting party of phanatons discovers unknown ruins on the northwest shore of Southern Harqual. They scamper back into the Merewood as quickly as possible to tell their chieftain.

A contingent of Sword Imperium soldiers, known as the Blades of the Emperor, heads off to explore the new mountain range to the south of the Empire of Swords.

12. Fireday

Several orc and ogre tribes living within the Storm Jungle agree to help the tabaxi conquer the surrounding lands.

In Onaway, hundreds of the faithful of Cronn ask Taith-El if he knows what the strange fog was and if the tabaxi might have anything to do with it. He is just as puzzled by the event as the rest of them.

“But I am sure the tabaxi are not involved in this… something… else has happened. Something completely unrelated, yet vital to Harqual’s future. We must try to understand the changes that are happening, we must not look upon this event as an evil thing and yet we must be cautious at the same time. All will be revealed to us when it is time. Until then, do not worry and go on with your lives.”

13. Seaday

The phanaton chieftain of the Merewood declares that the ruins discovered two days before are considered off-limits until more is learned of the place.

14. Windday

The combined might of the tabaxi, their strange griffon-like humanoid slaves and their new orc and ogre allies attack on three fronts – Anthmoor, Hutmallia and Tallawan. The army attacking Hutmallia breaks through the city’s defenses, captures the city and it’s residences. Tallawan holds its ground with the help of several powerful adventurers. Anthmoor knocks back the invading army, destroying hundreds of enemy soldiers with powerful magic and the aid of the Majestic Bronze Dragon of Harqual, Nethmalinor. The great dragon warns the attacking army:

“You threaten my home and the Balance, evil ones. Continue your onslaught on this city and I will make you pay… personally!”

The Thallin merchant ship, Charger, has not returned to Fruen from the north reaches of the Sea of the Sun like it was suppose to. The owner of the vessel fear that it might have been lost at sea due to the strange fog that engulfed the land and seas the previous week. The scout ship, North Wind, is sent to find the lost vessel.

A strange, unknown city is discovered on the shore of Cursed Bay, in Southern Harqual, by a nomadic tribe of rakasta. The rakasta flee when approached by the strange red-skinned, multi-armed humanoids of this place, heading for Adabrilia.

15. Starday

Early in the morning, barbarians in the Northlands discover a black citadel on the northwestern shore of Northern Harqual. They run in fear of this strange, unknown structure.

Later that same day, dwarven miners, working the eastern hills of the Greystone Mountains, stare in shock at the plains east of the mountains. Dozens of new city-states dot the land, where none should be! A few of them rub their eyes and look again still not believing what they see.

“This cannot be, no one could build cities that fast! By Moradin, the fog… the fog did this!”

The miners scramble for their equipment and head towards Milo to tell the High Thane of this strange occurrence.

16. Moonsday

The tabaxi armies attacking along the coast of the Storm Peninsula pull back into the Storm Jungle, its leaders unwilling to face the epic power of Nethmalinor. The tabaxi occupying Hutmallia refuse to leave, however, entrenching themselves into the city. They watch the sky, praying to Sa, their other god, for protection against the great Majestic Bronze.

In the Far South, a lizard man tribe living on the largest island of the Fachion Isles in Wulman Bay notices strange lights and sounds, during the evening, across the bay near the peninsula of Reef Bay. The superstitious lizard men immediately start moving to the other side of the island.

That same night, a patrol of soldiers, from the Republic of the Thorn, discover strange ruins on the southern shore of Southern Harqual. They camp outside the ruins for the night, planning to explore the place in the morning. A single rider is sent back to the Fortress of Thenin to tell the Consul of the ruins.

17. Earthday

Event: Circlenight – Druids gather at the Hallow Prairie near the northwestern edge of the Great Forest. They are baffled by the changes happening to the lands of Harqual.

18. Fireday

The city of Adabrilia is found ruined, and completely deserted, by the rakasta that discovered the new city located at Cursed Bay. They worry that these newcomers might have destroyed Adabrilia and ride north towards the Lake of the Horde, staying as far away from the new city as possible.

19. Seaday

A mounted patrol, from the Sovereign City of Yuln, discovers a odd, new city, built on stilts, on the eastern coast of Northern Harqual just north of the Great Expanse. They are not allowed into the city, due to the fear of its citizens – strange birdlike humanoids. They do learn its name, Tschaja.

20. Windday

The Xcellian merchant vessel, Wandering Gift, discovers a new city located on the southwest shore of Southern Harqual. The citizens of this new city are beautiful blue-green skinned sylvan folk. The city’s populace shuns the Xcellian merchants in fear. The Xcellian leave gifts for the newcomers on the shoreline and sail back to their city to tell their Merchant Lord about the strange new city.

21. Starday

In The Kingdom of the Greystones, the miners that saw the strange, new cities in the east arrive in Milo and ask for an audience with the High Thane. Her advisors scoff at the idea of dozens of cities appearing out of nowhere, fog or no fog. They are told to meet with the Thanes of their own clans and provide proof of what they say through proper channels. And only then would the High Thane consider such unfounded rumors.

22. Moonsday

A Yulnian Ambassador, named Henry Oswald, is sent to Tschaja to try and open up negotiations with the Tschajans.

23. Earthday

A huge army of tabaxi and their allies attack the fortifications at Ilasi. The defenders barely hold of the attack hordes. Tabaxi shamans and sorcerers using powerful magic to block the ability to teleport in or out of the city or cast Sending spells beyond the city’s walls. Governor Willowright has several riders break free from the battle, riding north to try and get reinforcements from Avion.

24. Fireday

The single rider dispatched to the Fortress of Thenin arrives to meet with the Republic’s leader. Consul Yuinii Bazgal takes the matter before the Senate. The Senate debates what should be done into the night.

25. Seaday

Early in the morning of the 25th, the Senate of the Republic of the Thorn declares the ruins found by its soldiers to be the property of the Republic and immediately sends out 200 soldiers to lay claim to the ruins and have it explored. They also send out diplomatic envoys to their allies with documents that legally claim the ruins by Thenin law.

26. Windday

Several tabaxi warships attack the city of Onaway but are sunk by the defending forces. The tabaxi survivors are hung as war criminals by the Onans.

27. Starday

In the Kingdom of Stonn, Sorcerers divine that the strange fog that engulfed Harqual was a one way magical gateway between Kulan and several distant planes. This event has magically altered the land and rumors of new ruins and cities have come from all over Harqual. The reason for this event is not discovered during the divining and the sorcerers name the event The Transformation.

28. Moonsday

The riders from Ilasi arrive in Avion, exhausted. They beg the queen for more reinforcements for the southern city. Lady Felicia agrees to send reinforcements. Several members of Cronn’s Pride volunteer to go to Ilasi and help break the siege. She now hasn’t a man to spare for Nasundria, if that city turns out to be under siege as well.

29. Earthday

The Wandering Gift arrives back in Xcellian and its captain informs the Merchant Lord, Anders Carrin, of the new city to the west. Intrigued, Lord Carrin sends his largest trading galleon, the Gem of the South, with some of his best wares, a wizard/vizier to open a dialogue with the newcomers, and some of his elite soldiers – just in case the newcomers turn out to be hostile.

30. Fireday

The wreckage of the Charger is found near the Nervia Isles by the North Wind. The ship’s crew is never found but strange ruins are along a new shoreline that was previously unknown. An elven crewmember on the North Wind names the ruins Caer Tih'bin or Ruins of the Mist.

Campaign Calendar!

Campaign Calendar is a program that I use regularly in conjunction with my World of Kulan Campaign Setting. The program was created by Bruce A. Gulke and its VB source code can be found on his Mythosa web site. (Look for it under Other Tools.)

http://www.mythosa.net/Utils.html

Bruce has some other great programs, which I have yet to download and try but by the quality of Campaign Calendar, they're probably pretty good. His current available programs (that he supports) are:

TABLESMITH 4.03 (Shareware / 2.5 MB)
CAMPAIGN SAGE 3.3 (Freeware / 500 KB)
CAMPAIGN SAGE 2.0 (Freeware / 1.4 MB)

Anyway, if you like, give Campaign Calendar a try. You can create your own custom fantasy calendar for your homebrew campaign setting.

This is what I did, and attached below is a zipped version of the New Calendar for Harqual.

Cheers!
