@Neurotic:
Maur knows that a deadly nightshade spider is not part of the natural world. White it is a magical beast, it is also extraplanar. He also knows that where there is one, there can be many more, although they tend to live in groups of no more than 2 to 4. One is bad enough. If there are more, then it is very bad.

He's never heard of them living on the surface. That is quite unusual. However, they are drawn to places that radiate death... and undeath. The creature will likely be larger than Angus. Much larger.

@MetaVoid, Litrix failed his Listen and Spot check for all foes. He is surprised and cannot act in the surprise round. Shouzas is also surprised and doesn't act in the surprise round.

All the other characters, and the spiders, are aware.

Surprise Round (from RC)
If some but not all the combatants are aware of their opponents, a surprise round happens before regular rounds begin. Any combatants aware of the opponents can act during the surprise round, so they make initiative checks. In initiative order (highest to lowest), combatants who started the battle aware of their opponents can act. They’re restricted to a single standard action or move action during the surprise round. They can also take free actions during the surprise round, at the DM’s discretion.

Combatants who are unaware at the start of battle don’t get to act during the surprise round. Unaware combatants are flat-footed.

If no one or everyone is surprised, the surprise round doesn’t occur.
The spiders became aware the moment the PCs knocked down the door.

Also, the hollowed out areas of the wall is considered difficult terrain. It costs two squares of movement to move through the hollowed out squares. (I'm going to change the color of those squares on the map.)

Also, any walls with rubble near them, or that appear damaged, are considered to be very weak. The spiders (or PCs) can break through the weakened walls with a successful DC 28 Strength check. The standard Break DC for other the ruin's other walls (without rubble or obvious damage) is 35.

(The Break DC for the walls of Stratesus' Chamber is 55. Those walls are considered "magically treated" superior masonry.)
