D&D 5E (2014) [OOC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

The thing is that was really just coincidence or subconscious on my part. What was really on my mind was the healing potions. I knew I had never gone over the loot (normally that is an end of session/between adventure thing for me) and wanted to make sure I had told you about that before anyone got knocked out. So I looked through the posts to tally up what you had found and saw that I had said the daggers were silver (I couldn't remember)...they aren't even an actual part of the adventure. I added them just because I like to add stuff that seems like it might be useful or makes sense. I thought some ceremonial daggers at a shrine to a demoness makes sense and why not make them silver?...sometimes it turns out to be actually useful.

Hah, well we lucked out and I like that you add touches like that (the bridge pins were neat too) but man...what would we have done here if not for the daggers? How do the writers expect people to deal with this? Even with them, this fight looks like an uphill battle...

I do think this fight is within the ability of a 2nd level party. Read on if you want a bit of a meta explanation for this fight...

The lower threshold for a deadly encounter is 800 (and 'deadly' is not the word they should have used...'difficult' is more appropriate) and your daily XP budget is 2400. This fight is 1350...so it'll be tough but IMXP 2X deadly is where a well rested party starts to get into real trouble. Besides, you overcome the trait that makes them tough...maybe you aren't using your ideal weapons but you can hurt them. They really don't do much damage (as you can see by my rolls) and they only have a +4 to attack. I'm being a bit on the 'nice' side here and having them forget their most dangerous deep gnomish traits during their first transformation. If they get away and you have to fight them again, I probably won't be so nice...

They are immune to non-silvered weapons but can be hurt by all manner of other damage (poison, fire, lightning, radiant, etc). I think the designers assume a 1st or 2nd level party would have access to a cantrip or two that could hurt them while the rest of the party holds them off.

Personally, if i were to design lycanthropes for 5e, rather than their limited damage immunity, I'd have made them resistant to ALL damage from non-silvered sources (except maybe radiant) and give them regeneration that can only be prevented with silver weapons or radiant damage. If you drop them to 0 hp they are incapacitated for a bit (maybe an hour or more) but you simply should not be able to kill them...were-creatures should be relentless and nearly indestructible without the right tools...that's what makes them fun and frightening. But it doesn't matter for your party as you have silver anyway.

OOC: Handy! But why's Erevan down 4hp? Nobody's gotten hurt since our long rest, I don't think?

ETA: Sorry, didn't get the notification for Uller's last post till this one was already up.

No problem. I just know how I miss things if there are lots of replies on a thread. Don't want a player feeling lost if he or she is AFK for a bit.

Nice link DMAesh. I'll erase the table on the front page and we can use that.

I'll make sure it is accurate when I at a computer. I don't think anyone is hurt at this point.

I just had put what JustinCase had on his post in the RG. I wasn't sure how accurate it was. :) Glad to be of help!

That's true. Would probably be a bit infuriating, but workable.

I guess they probably also didn't expect us to build a party with no full casters...and then run off after missing party mates without the cleric...heh.

Oh well, lucky us and our various silver tableware. :)

OOC: EDIT: Gurdfurnit! DM, can you roll for me? I tried every way possible. >.<

Dude try one last thing...same way you just rolled here, but with spaces around the plus sign.

ETA: Whoa, weird...your exact quote rolled fine here.
