D&D (2024) Polymorph temp hp remain

Yep. That is my biggest qualm about it being useful. Make one of two changes:

1. Have it affect more than a single target potentially, like a 15' cone. OR
2. Have the duration be 1 minute with repeated saves so the lion isn't roaring each round...

IMO either of those two changes would make it worth using possibly. As it stands, I think 9/10 times the lion is better off attacking.
The roar could be used not so much as an attack (that's just a side effect) but as an impressive means of attracting the attention of other lions in the neighbourhood, as in "Hey guys, I found us a tasty meal here - wanna help me kill it?"

But to what effect? Just fluff?? Why bother wasting an attack when the lion could "roar" that anyway like a PC can yell for help without giving up an attack or action.

I know what the rules say (and what they neglect to say), but in the end doesn't it just come down to the good old Rule of Common Sense? The reason that Wild Shape and Polymorph grant THP is because the target is transforming into a sturdier, hardier creature. When the target reverts back to their normal form, they are no longer sturdier and hardier, so they no longer benefit from the THP. Why would they? It seems pretty cut and dried to me.

This whole thread reeks of pedantic Munchkin nonsense.

Wanting to understand what RAW says doesn’t make one a pedantic munchkin nonsensible. I probably won’t run it by RAW but RAW is still RAW.

What I don’t get is the people that try to twist RAW into knots just so the game functions in a way that makes sense to them. Like you can houserule when raw doesn’t make sense.

Here's another related question, would Dispel Magic remove someone's THP? I think yes, since it ends spell effects. In that case, it would work for Druid Wildshape and Polymorph, both the form and the THP.
I wouldn't think so - casting Dispel Magic doesn't remove hit points regained from Cure Wounds, for example.

I'd definitely also thwack the player who insists that they keep the Temp HP after leaving Wild Shape.

RAI is not RAW.

Yes, and the Player's Handbook is not a suicide pact.

I doubt anyone is going to seriously entertain Polymorph as: "One 7th-level creature you can see within 60' gains 157 temporary hit points." I can see exactly zero DMs allowing that, but that is the literal result of this interpretation.

Armor of Agathys also doesn't specify what happens at the end of the duration (and didn't in 2014, either). There is a Sage Advice entry for the spell, but it's not really on-topic. Same with Heroism. Really, False Life is a little odd in that it grants temp hp without a duration.

On the other hand....

I'd definitely also thwack the player who insists that they keep the Temp HP after leaving Wild Shape.

I probably wouldn't do that here. Historically, Wild Shape healed a small amount of hp. In 3.5e, it was 1 hp/level. The fact that temp hp overlaps compensates for the increased amount. Even with Wild Resurgence I don't think it's really that amazing.
