They Changed FIREBALL?

Nonsense, my characters cast Fireball indoors frequently...

...when there were a lot of open doors, and at least one long corridor, anyway.

It's 33 10x10 cubes, so some of the larger rooms absorbed a lot of the foom! effect. Perfect for clearing out the corridors of some of the more complex dungeons, too. Though it did have the side effect of causing a lot of monsters to start heading for the enterance, with us in the way.

Bouncing lightning bolts were really fun, especially in a dungeon whose walls were less than a foot thick. Nothing like triggering multiple encounters at once. :)

Well, 1E fireball (and lightning bolt) was something you planned the whole fight around, since it could pretty much end it, for you too if you weren't careful. :)

Actually, thinking about it, there have been major changes made to Fireball with every new edition so far.

1E -> 2E: Damage capped at 10d6.

2E -> 3E: Spell no longer expands to fill its volume.

So if changes are in store for Fireball in 4E, it's just par for the course.

Well, if butchering sacred cows will make the game play better, pass the celestial ketchup. ;)

Too much butchering will make the game not Dungeons and Dragons except in name only, and that would make it undoubtably unfun. When I play Dungeons and Dragons I want the game to be recognizably Dungeons and Dragons. Not some GURPS fantasy wannabe with the DnD logo on the book.
