You know what really got us? The 2 PCs with the least HP were the ones that got hit the most.
Heck, the Über-tankish Knight spent most of that final combat chasing the dragons & taunting them instead of taking swings at them! Of course, that's simply good tactics on the part of the dragons. But even (literally) wading into combat with the dragons, Shrike only took 30HP of damage from them (a further 28 was taken by the spell the Cleric put on her), and only 9HP of damage before that.
Meanwhile, the poor mage was getting shelled. Repeatedly.
Another error we made- the cleric should have given the mage the energy resistance. Shrike had 90HP and Evasion...she wasn't going to be as affected by the dragons' breath weapon.
Again, much of the problem on our side was, IMHO, the result of simply slipping these experienced PCs on for the day as opposed to growing into them over months of play.
