Unearthed Arcana New Unearthed Arcana: Rune Knight, Swarmkeeper, The Revived

Another new Unearthed Arcana! "In today’s Unearthed Arcana, three classes each receive a playtest option. The fighter gets a Martial Archetype option: the Rune Knight. The ranger gains a Ranger Archetype option: the Swarmkeeper. And the rogue acquires a Roguish Archetype option: the Revived."

That's what I mean. Runes on weapons would be mostly attack/offence oriented, armour mostly personal or shareable buff style effects and shields mostly defensive type effects. Obviously some overlap would likely occur (or need to occur), but it would offer a little variety and nuance both in combat and non-combat scenarios.

Yes, I support this.

A choice with no meaning is no choice at all. Once you pick your runes it's just a matter of figuring out a 'usual loadout' and you can basically ignore the idea that you are engraving your runes after every long rest.

This misrepresentation of Norse culture verges on abuse, like misrepresenting a Native American headdress.

"You cannot “appropriate” ancient Nordic, Celtic, Greek, or Roman traditions. None of these cultures and traditions were closed to foreigners, nor do they exist in some unbroken lineage complete with initiation today. They are not among the marginalized like Natives and black people are."

It is the other way around.

The German scholars of the previous two centuries fantasized about a ‘master race’. Scientifically, the existence of such a ‘race’ turns out to be complete and utter nonsense, and the notion that this ‘master race’ had a singular monolithic religion likewise turns out to be complete and utter nonsense. Today, German scholars reject the concepts of Germanic uniformity, and are far more cautious about the meager evidence for what Germany looked like.

One fact is certain. At that time, what is today Germany comprised many completely unrelated ethnic groups, tribes, and cultures. These Nongermanic tribes adopted a Germanic language for complex cultural reasons.

Moreover, the misnomered ‘Proto-Germanic’ language probably originated in Scandinavia, in the complex multicultural matrix in Scandinavia, when Proto-Russian migrants entered Scandinavia via Sweden.

this is the last I’m going to comment because I don’t want to derail further. Literally every article I could find has the origin of Nordic myths starting from the northern Germanic paganism. Which makes sense, since people migrated from south to north. Unfortunately there is very little written record prior to the romans getting involved, but all evidence, and all the articles I could find, have those myths of Woden starting in northern Germany.

but let’s say for sake of argument you’re right. Even if it started in Scandinavia, it is undeniable that much of the pagan peoples of Northern Europe worshipped the same gods. Ergo, someone from Northern Europe would not be culturally appropriating that religion since they have the same shared beliefs culturally.

so...either way, your position is mistaken.

The Rune Knight is fantastic! It's not quite clear if the short rest recharge is for the Knight or the person who used the magic of the rune? Since, I assume, you can use them on allies' gear as well. There's potential for some shenanigans if you keep passing around the runic knife to say get over an obstacle or something but that's part of the fun I think.
I will have to reread the Forge Cleric but the Rune Knight strikes similar tones with the enchanting gear for a temporary set of time. I quite like it.

I really think the Revived Rogue looks fun, but I wish that Bolts from the Grave keyed off of a different stat than Dexterity.

If it were ANYTHING ELSE, there would be a reason for a different stat layout for your rogue, and some player choice in how to balance the stats. But there isn't. The same races will be rogues, and they're now firing a beam (awesome) from dexterity (ugh).

Based on the theming constitution would work well.
