In today’s Unearthed Arcana, we explore character options from the Dragonlance setting. This playtest document presents the kender race, the Lunar Magic sorcerer subclass, the Knight of Solamnia and Mage of High Sorcery backgrounds, and a collection of new feats, all for use in Dungeons & Dragons.

Kender have a (surprisingly magical) ability to pull things out of a bag, and a supernatural taunt feature. This magical ability appears to replace the older 'kleptomania' description -- "Unknown to most mortals, a magical phenomenon surrounds a kender. Spurred by their curiosity and love for trinkets, curios, and keepsakes, a kender’s pouches or pockets will be magically filled with these objects. No one knows where these objects come from, not even the kender. This has led many kender to be mislabeled as thieves when they fish these items out of their pockets."

Lunar Magic is a sorcerer subclass which draws power from the moon(s); there are notes for using it in Eberron.

Also included are feats such as Adepts of the Black, White, and Red Robes, and Knights of the Sword, Rose, and Crown.

This is the smartest thing I have read today.

However, I expect WotC (Hasbro really) thinks they can make more money by holding their inherited IP close to their chest.

WotC has changed their philosophy in the last 3-4 years, and has been marketing very hard to new players. Many of the designers are old fans, so I'm not surprised they like to throw in old references, but it seems clear their target demographic has changed relatively recently.

And I didn't mean releasing old product as pdf; they've been doing that for a while and I'm appreciative of it. I meant releasing settings to the Guild so independent creators can produce their own 5e products utilizing the IP from those settings. Only a handful of those have been released.

Gotta admit its kind of wild that a campaign (Witchlight) is released that has old characters like Kelek and Warduke, but it's designed that the group doesn't need to fight at all during the campaign. Talk about a blending of old and new.

Your changing your original statement which was that this has been the case since 2014 and now stating this has been the case in the last 3-4 years. Ok. Let’s talk about the last 3-4 years.

2018: neverwinter Nights enhanced edition released. First of the Original Adventures Reincarnated released, collaboration between WotC and Goodman games. RA Salvatore returns to write novels about Driz’zt and crew. Tome of Foes: stats for all kinds of planescape related goodness. Dungeon of the Mad Mage, a classic megadungeon.

2019: Ghosts of Saltmarsh released. Descent into Avernus released. Eberron setting released. Rise of Tiamat revisited to polish up and release as one book rather than pervious two.

2020: baldurs gate 3 released (beta). Curse of Strahd polished up and revised a bit more.

2021: Van Richten’s guide to Ravenloft. Dark Alliance released, a game centered around older heroes. Fizbans Treasury of dragons released, filled with updated stats for older dragon menaces.

2022: this year they have scheduled for multiple setting reprints, updated to 5e. Assuming they can stick to their schedule, this is going to be the best year for established gamers to get catered specifically to.

this is a lot of investment in products to appeal to an older player base specifically. I don’t want to go back to the 2-3 books a month we had in 3e, that’s a recipe for disaster for a publishing company I feel, but I feel there is ample evidence that WotC isn’t only committed to new players and it’s weird people keep saying that.

also, just to clarify in the buying reprinted products in dms guild: I don’t have PDFs on the way.

okay you're going to have to explain this to me?
but if he is not a load then he is nearly bad at being funny a subjective crime only.
There was some big bad evil overgod about to destroy the world. Tasselhoff snuck up and stabbed it in the foot with his +5 knife Rabbit Slayer, causing it enough pain to distract it long enough for the bigger heroes to take it out. They couldn't have done it without him.

Hilarious point about the “don’t need combat to finish” part they touted when the book released. It’s true, you don’t need to fight but sometimes to avoid a fight you have to make some SHADY decisions. It’s sort of hilarious. “Sure you don’t have to be violent. But your going to for sure enable others violence to do so”

Then maybe you are unfamiliar with Romani stereotypes: but they are very present in the Kender.
From google "Romani Stereotypes"

“Gypsies” were considered dirty, deceitful, too lazy to work, and prone to steal. The most heinous accusation was that they kidnapped the young, a charge frequently hurled against Jews as well.

Thats not Kender at all aside from the stealing part and Kender do it as a part of their "child-like innocence and wonder" and not from a sense of gain or malice.

Is any traveler who steals character just a Romani stereotype now?

Ill 100% give you Ravenloft, even though they were just there as an adaption of Dracula's cult, but Kender just seems to be wanting it to fit.
