Sure he could have. He could have said, "Mutants and Masterminds is perfect for every genre of gaming for every gaming group on the planet."

That would have been more wrong.

Do I detect a note of bitterness in there? As a generic system, it's about as good as any - does supers best, fits most others pretty well.

Nah. Just a lighthearted jab at slavering fanboys.
And I disagree, by the way, about it doing supers best.

You might possibly detect a note of bitterness, there, Jim. You see, M&M killed his parents by sabotaging a trapeze when he was just a lad.

One note of interest for me is that there seem to be some people who judge the system by its performance in character creation, while others judge the system by its performance in play after character creation. Yes, everyone does both to some degree, but there does seem to be some distinction, and not necessarily along party lines.

I like d20 Modern at both, and I like M&M at both (now that I understand it). But I'd say that I like the complexity of M&M for character creation, because I can take a lot of time to really make exactly what I want... and then gameplay is usually fast and furious, whereas d20 Modern has faster character-creation time, for me at least, but combat tends to run a little slower.

That's all just me, of course.

Then we'll just have to disagree - I've found that every single instance of other implementations really falls short for me. That covers both the D20M variants and standard D20. For me, MnM pretty much roundly trounces its competiton, though that wasn't what I was referring to - as a system, MnM covers the supers genre best, with varying success on others, much like HERO.

Not nice!
...

I almost snorted an M&M (candy coated chocolate kind) out my nose at that one.

That's the beauty of it... we can disagree.
Civilly, even. ;)
For me... Supers games go like this, in order of how well I like them for the genre:

Marvel Super Heroes (FASERIP)
Blood and Vigilance
Modern Super Heroes (good for resource material)
Vigilance (for base D20)
Champions
4 Color to Fantasy (again... good for resource material)

And it's completely subjective. Just... how well I personally like them for playing in the genre.

At some point I might get a copy of M&M2E to mine for resources for my B&V game, but I'm pretty well entrenched... as are most people.

M&M2 owns and will continue to own the Superheroes RPG market for some time to come. WOTC is crazy if they think d20 Supers is going to overtake what is inarguably the most complete and easiest to use superhero game on the planet.

I have played Champions and V&V before it, as well as FASERIP Marvel, and M&M2 trumps all.

Classes just DON'T WORK for superheroes. When will people learn?

Except, of course, that some people LIKE classes and levels and hit points for supers.
*shrug*
To each their own.

FASERIP is my system of choice overall. It just doesn't model supers any better than that in my opinion, but since I've switched to the D20 System (and D20 Modern for modern gaming... imagine that...), B&V is it for me and my group.
