If you read the replies and compare them to the votes, I thinks you'll get a pretty clear picture of what you had intuitively guessed:

Complainers talk more than praisers.

Barely 10% of the votes indicate any preference of a previous edition over the current one. Yet over 50% of the comments give that same indication. About 83% indicate a preference of some degree for the current edition over previous editions. The balance (~7%) either have no preference whatsoever or don't like D&D.

The creator of the thread came out and asked why we even come here. That might have something to do with the fact that we are so vocal on this thread.

People who run with the pack don't need to explain themselves. Those whose stand apart are often required and/or feel compelled (unfortunately) to explain themselves. Its true in everything societal. You 3.0/3.5 lovers would be in the same boat if you went to a Storyteller board (i wouldn't suggest it, they can be quite rude, especially to D&Ders).

For those who voted against the current edition or don't play it --

Why are you here?

Honestly, what benefit do you gain from EN World? It seems like 99%+ of the message board topics, reviews, etc. here are geared towards 3e or 3.5e. So again, I ask, in all sincerity and without sarcasm:

Why are you here?

Because the boards don't serve just 3.0/3.5. The percentage isn't anywhere near 99%. It serves both D20 games and OGL games. Plenty of the posts around here are general posts that don't have anything to do with specific editions of D&D, or even D&D at all. They appeal to many different gamers.

Also, these boards are just fun to surf. They have a terrific ratio of fun people to jerks. In fact, That ratio i would judge to be about 99% :D

Well it's more like this is a 3.x D&D (D20) board so it is really no wonder that the poll looks like it does now. Everything else would have been fairly desastrous, no? Asking the same question on Dragonsfoot or similar boards would give you totally different results. So the whole thing is a bit of patting yourself on the back ;)

Only reason I replied was to clarify which edition I prefer, cause there's no option to vote for '81 B/X D&D... Otherwise I get lumped in with AD&D 1/2, and they're okay but not really my favorite. In fact I'd probably play C&C (an OGL, d20-derived game) before those. I really don't like games with lots of big books full of rules.
And Dragonsfoot is down right now, has been for the past week or so...

It seems that there are a lot of folks here who actively, or at least vocally, dislike the current edition of D&D.

Needlessly inflammatory comment removed. Please don't go there Gentlegamer - Plane Sailing, EN mod

Maybe this should have been multiple choice. There's really two questions in one here; preference of current edition of D&D vs. earlier editions, and preference of D&D vs. other games. I strongly prefer the current edition of D&D to earlier editions (although by current, I really mean 3e and/or 3.5--I have mixed reactions to the changes between those two) and I slightly prefer some other games to D&D. Ironically, though, most of those other games are d20.

I'm mainly here for the Gary Gygax Q&A marathon. It's been very, very interesting to me.
Other than that, I like some of the threads that deal with OOP stuff, like the classic module threads, and so on.
There's also been some interesting "generic" discussions, like the 1001 dungeon rooms, maps, and so forth.
Also, Dragonsfoot has been down for the past week. It's not surprising a bunch of folks are hanging out here more...

I would play 3.0/3.5 (my custom blend with a few small house rules and minor syncretism between the two, not either straight) over any other edition of D&D and over any other fantasy game, except perhaps a GURPS Fantasy game.

2e had great settings, but horrible rules. 3e apparently has better rules, but FR and Eberron aren't to my liking, so I prefer my homebrew.

My Answer:

3.0/3.5: Yes, greatly prefer it. Wish myslef and my players had a lot more time for it. Though many of the problems raised above are relevant.

2.0/with mondo options: We had a great campaign with it, but never again. 3rd edition does everything better.

1.0 AD&D/RC B&E D&D/OD&D: Mostly did 1st ed AD&D and liked it. Would play any of these older versions under the right circumstances. Would not DM them under just about any circumstances.

Who are these people posting on this board?

Enworld is a great community (though nothing is perfect)...and that must be the answer :)...still, has a poll been done to see what people actually play: current D&D, non D&D D20, older D&D, other stuff entirely, would be interesting to find out...

What you call the "current edition of D&D" is not D&D. It is d20 Fantasy, a wholly different game [/obligatory correction]
You know, the grapes actually aren't sour. They're really quite sweet and juicy, in fact. Much better than those on the lower branches, or those that have fallen to the ground and started rotting. Whining and moaning, and making false statements and claims about it won't make them sour, either.

The current edition of D&D is the grand result of 30 years of improvements to the core D&D game. It has become so wonderful, in fact, that a whole gaming system concept has spun off from it called "d20". And lame attempts to make "clever" insults doesn't change the fact that D&D3.x is the pennacle of evolution for this game, and has started a Rennaisance for the hobby. The success of D&D3.x's child, d20, is proof of the excellence.
