How Can You Not Throw a Spear?

Thread title says it all...no throw range for the spear (or descriptor). Curiously, in the PHB page 232, it mentions +6 perfect hunter’s spear...under Thrown Weapons.

I am thinking spears should have a 5/10 range...

The javelin is a spear, basically replacing the short spear. It has a thrown range and you could give it a name change to shortspear for flavor purposes. I also don't think anything would be harmed by adding that 5/10 to the spear. That would leave the javelin/shortspear the best choice for range and spear and shield fighting, the spear would have a shorter range and a bit more damage, while the longspear couldn't be thrown at all. That's what I'm going to do if any of my players should wish to use spears.

For some reason it never occurred to me to think of the javelin as a spear, but you are right. I always think of the Roman javelins, disposable with the narrow head. I always think of the spear as a versatile medium length melee/thrown weapon. But with more thought your explanations make more sense in the D&D world...except with primitive versions. The military spears were more specialized. I can see now how a metal-hafted, 6' long spear might not be so throwable.

Caught in my own bias. Thanks for the wake-up.

PS: Still doesn't explain the error in the Magic Item section.
