TUW: The Steel Trade [IC]

Days 129 - 136: In Bergbaulager, part 2

GM: During the course of the week stay, the Seekers do learn some vital information about the Maldrog city, including its name, Bergbaulager, which means mining camp. The cost of the stay is 480 stein. The first night's lodging is apparently free to all traders.

There are apparently several established communities about the large lake in long standing trade with the Maldrog. The city exports tin, iron, and specific tools and utensils. Though their manufacture of armor and weapons is exceptional, they will not trade them in bulk. They will, however, sell them on an individual basis.

One of the trade barges imports skins, corn, and game from a Rheini community across the lake. That crew speaks some Rheini and it becomes a basis for initial communication between the Seekers and the Maldrog, though all are very limited in its use.

The Seekers learn of the developed communities around the lake. The nearest is a monastic-like community of Mhytres of the Orngaddrin tribe who trade precious metals and various crystals for iron. The Rheini who trade skins, game, and corn for tools. Further across the lake is a community of Aedaman of the Hebrian tribe who trade game, fabric, and tobacco for tools. There is also another community of Mhytres of the Suddanig tribe. Trade between them and the Maldrog is fully mutual.

One disappointing fact is that the Maldrog will not allow anyone outside of their community to be involved in any of their combat training. They are not aggressive or hostile about it. They do not even seem to mind observers, but they are opposed to outside participation.

GM: At the end of the week, the Maldrog that the Seekers had met before and directed toward Southroad Fair, meets with everyone and expresses a desire to establish a trade basis with the community. He is offering tools, including axes and arrowheads, which are considered more tool and less weapon. He is expressly interested in the fuel oil he bought before.

He introduces himself as Weit. He and his crew seem desirous of leaving soon, hopefully within the next day.

Merin and Tor both agree with Weit's intention; returning to Southroad would be the best idea, at this point. The establishment of a trade route is the most important thing that has happened as of late, at least to Merin's way of thinking. Merin will make a detailed map of the route between Berg and Southroad, and that map will be furnished to Giodavi upon the party's return. Merin knows that trading with the Maldrog will help Southroad to grow, and that becomes his driving desire.

OOC: these maldrog trade with that many communities but none of them in the city speak a language familiar to the Seekers?

During the week San-Bolo will also visit the various smiths and attempt to communicate the need of their community for a new blacksmith, trying to convince one of them to make the move. In the spirit of full-disclosure they will inform them that our last smith was murdered.

Sannit says to the Seekers, "It seems we've hit upon an even greater potential for trade than we hoped for. I would like to travel this lake and visit the various communities. What about the rest of you?"

Vadin, after spending a week observing the Maldrogs thinks it would be best to establish this trade route. He says to the group, "This has been fun, but I agree we should try to establish a trading route. Perhaps on our travel we can visit with further trading partners as Sannit suggests."

GM: There are 27 tribes of peoples among the 3 races, 9 tribes for each race. The party has only begun to scratch the surface of exposure.

GM: The armorer, weaponsmith, and both blacksmiths are all friendly people. They happily engage in the discourse, occassionally throwing in a word or two of various other languages of their own exposure. When all is said and done, Bolo point is not quite conveyed to its intent. The the smiths think that San-Bolo are brokering trade due to the loss of Southroad Fair's blacksmith.

The two blacksmiths are willing to trade anything that they manufacture. They will accept raw ore, coal, and brimstone in direct trade. Any other materials are considered indirect trade and would need to go through a mediator to determine value.

During the week in Bergbaulager, Tor spends a great amount of time working with Noggin the blacksmith. It benefits him in two ways. His knowledge of smithing improves as well as his use of the Maldrog language.

Sheldon agrees with Sannit.
"I too would like to visit these other communities, perhaps with a little time, the Maldrog will be fully comfortable with us and we can make the trips on the trade barges. The more that we can learn of the world at large, the better. In the mean time, I think we should go ahead and make a return trip with Weit's Prospectors and see what we can go ahead and establish in the way of regular trade."

GM: Party XP will be awarded for the effort to acquire a new smith.

Sannit grins at Sheldon and replies, "Think bigger brother. Our own boat will be more comfortable and we would not have to wait on the Maldrog for transport."

Bolo says, "We are mastering the ways of the land. Should we not add the lake as well?"

San-Bolo agree that returning to Southroad Fair to establish the trade route is a good move. Sannit will attempt to trade his axes in for Maldrog made axes. Bolo will acquire Maldrog made arrows.

They are friendly to Weit and his crew and Sannit will repeat some of the stories about the Seekers, using pantomime when needed. Bolo will acquire some tobacco for the return trip, intending to share a few pipes at night around the fire with Seekers and Weit's group. I guess she also acquires a pipe.

Turtle makes friends with the miner's bear and also finds time to go on hunts with Myth. He delights in any time he can see the magical flying hawk Feroz soaring across the sky.

Tor samples some of the Maldrog-made drinks (ale? wine?) during his stay, and tries to convey to Weit that Southroad has drinks that the Maldrog might want to trade for (Pine Vine, etc.)

GM: Added Comments:
The Maldrog make something like beer. Since distillation has not yet been invented, nothing stronger exists. The type of beverage depends on the source. Fruits make wines. Grains make ales. Sugars make meads.

Merin tells Weit (as best he can) that Southroad not only has the best leather armor around, but also decent weaponry, and abundant herbs and roots, most of which grow locally, and can be traded for the herbs and roots that grow in the Maldrogs' region.

Before leaving Berg, it occurs to Tor that he should inquire as to what the Maldrog might have available for sale, especially if any of it is superior to what Tor is already using; specifically, Tor wants to see what kind of Longswords and Shields the Maldrog have. It occurs to Tor that his iron sword, and his wooden shield, would probably prove quite inferior to any sword or shield made from steel, and if the Maldrog have such items, Tor is interested in upgrading.

Sheldon laughs.
"I see I am being a bit short sighted on this one."

Indigo adds.
"I like it, but these barges the Maldrog build will no do then. We should visit and try to work with the Aedaman that bring the cloth. Hebrians, I think they are called. They have sailing vessels, which should afford us greater speed and maneuverability without the fatigue of rowing everywhere.

I would hate to see us find ourselves in a hostile situation and be too tired to handle it well

GM: Tobacco and a pipe are to be had from either tavern. A good pipe was purchased for 10 stein (clams) and also 10 stein worth of tobacco.

GM: Turtle and the miner's black bear are allowed to com and go from the gates as they please, often traveling with the mining crew to hunt while the Maldrog dig. Myth can readily find his own way in and out of the city without the need for the gate. Myth enjoys the company of the two bears but cannot understand how they can eat such terrible things as grubs, beetles, berries, and cacti, all while seeming to enjoy them. Myth could only consider munching some grasses after eating too many particularly fat rabbits.
