And your literally describing what the word errata means.
Errata means "to correct." The Revision is not correcting anything. It is providing an alternate take. Nothing is making the old PHB Ranger ineligible to use or changing it.

don't want to quote everyone, expressing this sentiment but your problem with the concept is just the name, its not a lot of work to refluff it or for the design team to expand the fluff.
I'm a fan of the raven queen character/power since its a death as nature instead of death as creepy evil skeleton summoning thing, as has always been the case in fantasy rpg.
really liked the subclass cause it had a clear bent towards divination spells and exporting and investigation/perception....
was definitely some things that needed to be re-worked, like the double dip familiar thing.
Really would like a shadowfel patron that isn't all about undead in general, something closer to the shadow sorc but has a patron. raven queen was getting there, hexblade will do but, meh I want that tome pact divination feel on my warlock, the raven was a great ability for what I want my lock to be.
I learned a new word today; that's a good idea, makes it more campaign malleable: I like the idea of working with a Discworld style Death.I liked gyor's idea from a while back to rename it The Psychopomp patron. The Raven Queen could be an example, along with beings like Marraenoloths, Valkyries and Maruts.

WotC abused the word to mean "rewriting the rules" in previous editions, but are wisely avoiding that approach now.
Doesn't change the fact that its what is being done in any revision of any kind. Any revision that doesn't include a new edition printing.
again functionally identical. no difference of any kind in what your describing, works in exactly the same way.
also something that has already happened this edition as they changed what is or isn't a long rest in errata.
They are not functionally the same. An Errata makes the original content (the content being changed) unusable. It changes the rules. This does not do that. It gives alternatives, but doesn't change the rule.
creating an alternative is by itself a rule change.
You misunderstand. An Errata makes the old rule unusable in official play. This does not do that. It lets you choose either or. It is not an Errata.
