And just because a disgruntled fan of an older edition is in denial about the obvious inherit features that are fundamental to the game does not make it not D&D.
I'm sure the side by side compare and contrast of d20 Fantasy and AD&D have been done to death at this forum.

I can see things inspired by D&D in d20, but that doesn't make it simply the "latest edition" of the game. Again, BD&D and AD&D were two seperate games. Acknowledging this isn't casting aspersions on either. Neither should it be considered such to point out that "D&D 3.x" is actually a wholly seperate game from what was before known as "D&D."

By the way, I have liked all of the d20 Fantasy I have played. Once I was able to realize that it wasn't D&D, my expectations of the rules and game play were able adapt to learn the new system.

The new Volkswagen Beetle is an entirely different car from the classic car of the same name. This doesn't change the fact that they have that same name.

For those who voted against the current edition or don't play it --

Why are you here?

Honestly, what benefit do you gain from EN World? It seems like 99%+ of the message board topics, reviews, etc. here are geared towards 3e or 3.5e. So again, I ask, in all sincerity and without sarcasm:

Why are you here?

Simple. The community. This is an excellent community. A large number of people here do have open minds and are willing to talk about other systems from time to time.

Most everybody is friendly and considerate, even when having disagreements. :D

Where I disagree with Rasyr is that I don't consider HARP to be the end-all-be-all either, but I do like many aspects of that system.
I don't think it is the be-all, end-all either. I just happen to like it better than D&D. :D

Personally, I do not think that ANY game is perfect, period. Everything depends upon the tastes of the players playing the game, and what works for one will not work for another.

You know I was trying to think of an apt analogy when you posted this. :)

I think you'll find long time owners of the original beetle (herbie lovers, oregoners, vermonters, mexico city) either love or hate the new beetle, but all see it as "a different car".

The original is a 3-beater you can repair yourself. Heck. You can rebuild the entire car yourself if you care too. And without being a mechanic. Try that on any of today's cars. Including the new beetle. It's a different car.

But to anyone outside the cult of old beetle owners, it's the same line of car. The division of similarity is too fine for them to bother with. Even though purists see the 100's of differences.

Dungeons & Dragons [current edition] is the one true game. All previous editions were just attempts to achieve this level of excellence.

OD&D was concept notes.
BD&D was alpha.
AD&D1 was beta.
AD&D2 was beta revised.
D&D3 went gold.
D&D3.5 is gold with patch.

D&D has reached this stage of excellence due to a 30-year development cycle with expansive play testing.

No amount of whining and counter claims will change the fact that D&D still lives, now fully and vibrantly, in its current edition.

Personally I prefered OD&D(iaglo), but I like the D20 rules mechanics more than 1e AD&D and never played 2e.

Overall I think I probably liked RQ2 the best out of the systems I've played

It's fairly simple really,

On this site, there are reviews for Blackmoor d20, CSIO d20, various Hackmaster products, Conan d20, CoC d20, Mutants & Masterminds, Castles & Crusades, etc., etc., etc. All products that I'm quite interested in and don't get much coverage on boards devoted solely to OOP D&D.

Also on this site, there is actually quite a bit of discussion on old D&D products. Quasqueton's old module reviews being a great example.

Also on this site are extensive Q&A sessions with some dude named Gary Gygax. Why on earth would a fan of OOP D&D come to a place with that? [sarcasm]

Also on this site, there is quite a bit of non-rule specific type discussion - what to do with problem players, what to do with TPK's, rules-lite v. rules heavy, etc., etc.

ENWorld, as it happens, has the best combination of mature, active, and intelligent posters of the d20 oriented board. If I want to see what's going down on the d20 scene, this is the place to go.

So, I could be what many d20 fans accuse OOP D&D fans of being, an ostrich sticking my head in the sand with regard to new gaming products out there. Or I could expose myself to broader gaming horizons. The fact is, I've probably bought more gaming products in the last year or so since coming to ENWorld than any time since I was a teenager. It just so happens that almost none of them are d20 products. I don't particularly dislike 3e/d20 in any sort of active or emotional way. However, there are about 10 games I'd rather play/DM first and two of those 10 games are OOP versions of D&D.
