D&D 5E Xanathar's Guide to Everything: What subclasses made the cut?

What would have been great was if every class did its subclass choice at the SAME level (say 2nd), so we could have an optional rule to allow any subclass to go with any class! ☺

Furthermore, it could be cool with an optional variant to be allowed many subclasses, even within one and the same class!

The game is ready for deeper and not just wider complexity. That is, more layers of crunch to existing characters, as opposed to only new class options for new characters...!

Shadow of the Demon Lord is a game that does exactly this. It's a robust idea, and seems to work pretty well.

Personally, I felt that the Hexblade was more of a "Sorry about the blade 'lock, try this as a replacement", and as such most if could have been grafted onto a revised blade 'lock. But that will never happen. I felt the Lore Master had little redeeming qualities about, other than the name and a weak try at a 'generalist' wizard. Some of the others seem intriguing though.

D&D Beyond on Youtube is previewing the subclasses that are in Xanathar's.

They just did the Cavalier. Basically they took the most popular features of the Cavalier and the most popular features of the Knight and combined them into what is effectively a new subclass called Cavalier. Which is what I thought they'd do.

The person who wanted a Defender fighter subclass got their wish, its made clear its very defendery.

I really like this series as it details the thoughts that went into designing these subclasses.

I'm glad circle of Dreams made it, that was a druid subclass I was really interested in trying.

Also, I'm mostly commenting to follow the news that appears on this thread :P

If you want you can actually do this. It works just fine for a surprising number of subclass/class combos.
