Tenser (as in Tenser's Floating Disk) was one of the first Dungeons & Dragons wizards. He was a character played by Gary Gygax's son, Ernest (Tenser is an anagram of Ernest) in a game set in the newly created Castle Greyhawk; later he became an archmage, and was reintroduced as a member of the Circle of Eight in 1989's City of Greyhawk boxed set. He was killed in 1991 during the Greyhawk Wars, and returned to life in 1998's adventure Return of the Eight. Ernie was kind enough to share a little information about the character and his personality.
New on EN5ider, the 5th Edition patreon - Cosmic Syzygy! Some sorcerers are linked to the heavens - the cosmic power of stars, moons, and planets. This new Sorcerous Origin is accompanied by the Astrologer and Cosmic Ritualist feats, and the new spells Astromancy and Eclipse. Sorcerers with the Cosmic Syzygy ring grow more powerful at times of astrological significance, and are able to evoke the power of destiny, draw energy from the alignments of celestial bodies, and glimpse into the future. By David N Ross; illustrated by Ellis Goodson.
In his AMA yesterday, WotC's Mike Mearls frequently referenced his dislike for D&D's initiative system, and mentioned that he was using a new initiative system in his own games. He later briefly explained what that was: "Roll each round. D4 = ranged, d8 = melee, d12 = spell, d6 = anything else, +d8 to swap gear, +d8 for bonus action, low goes 1st. Oh, and +d6 to move and do something ... adds tension, speeds up resolution. So far in play has been faster and makes fights more intense." That's the short version; there's likely more to it. Mearls mentioned briefly that he might trial it in Unearthed Arcana at some point to see what sort of reaction it gets.
A few days behind the news curve on this one - apologies! Veteran game designer Kenneth Hite, author of Trail of Cthulhu and Night's Black Agents, has been revealed as the lead designer on Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition. Hite announced it via social media, following a live announcement at a World of Darkness event in Berlin -- "Now it can be revealed: I am the Lead Designer for VAMPIRE: THE MASQUERADE 5th Edition. Some pretty big Doc Martens to fill." There's not a lot more info available yet, but I'll report it as I hear it.
Turn Order: Warped, the official stream of the WOIN roleplaying game system, is back with a new episode! "The crew of the Black Fang visits Arthur's old Borian colony to receive a new quest to gather some very deadly plants." Join GM of Doom "wacksteven" and the crew of the Black Fang in their intrepid science-fiction adventures! As always, you can get video or audio version of the show - simply subscribe to the YouTube channel or to the official podcast! Or, of course, you can watch the show live on Twitch as it goes out every Saturday! Note that the show features adult language.
Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a turn-based RPG video game which was Kickstarted in 2015. I don't usually cover video games here, since tabletop RPGs are a big enough subject on their own, but this one's a little different because the developers recently revealed a "Game Master Mode". Not only that, they used that mode to play Lost Mine of Phandelver - the adventure in the D&D 5E Starter Set - at WotC's offices. It has overtones of Neverwinter Nights, a game of which I have very fond memories. (thanks to Søren for the scoop)
While the show Tabletop normally focuses on boardgames, it occasionally dips into tabletop roleplaying games. A couple of years ago, Will Wheaton and his friends played Green Ronin's Dragon AGE; and now they've turned their attention to Evil Hat's Fate Core. This episode of Tabletop features Felicia Day, screenwriter John Rogers, Will Wheaton, and GM (and co-designer of Fate) Ryan Macklin. Wheaton describes Fate as the gold standard of games which let the rules get out of the way so as to focus on the story.
Paizo has been gearing up the Starfinder preview machine in advance of August's release, with a look at two of the core classes (the charming Envoy and the shadowy Operative) as well as one of the Iconic PCs, Navasi, a young envoy. They describe each class in broad terms and show off one ability - the Envoy's Clever Feint, and the Operative's Cloaking Field.
I mentioned previously that Pathfinder was coming to Fantasy Grounds. That happened last week, meaning that the Virtual Table Top is now an official licensee, and the first batch of products, including the Core Rules, Bestiary, Kingmaker adventure path, and more are already available. FG's head honcho Doug Davison said that "they've been very strong sellers so far, supplanting the official D&D add-ons that normally dominate our Weekly Top Sellers list in the first day. It is customary for a new release to have a spike as interest and hype are the highest at this stage; however, most third-party products still fail to dislodge D&D from the top seller list. This will be an interesting metric to watch as they go head to head and especially as new products launch for both publishers at the same time."
Today is the final day to enter the 2017 Gen Con EN World RPG Awards! For those publishers who want to wait until the last minute, your last minute is nigh! Any package with a postmark dated after today, May 8, 2017, can not be accepted and any e-submission received after today, May 8, 2017, can not be accepted. Now that the hardcovers are arriving in the hands of Kickstarter backers, the hardcover version of O.L.D. The Fantasy Heroic Roleplaying Game is now available! This beautiful 350-page hardcover book contains rules for character creation, a wide array of medieval and fantasy equipment (including the Bohemian Earspoon!), a flexible, freeform verb-noun magic system powered by Magic Points, rules for wilderness travel, stronghold building, and warfare, and extensive guidelines for building your own setting, races, careers, monsters, and more. Turn Order: Warped, the official stream of the WOIN roleplaying game system, is back with a new episode! The crew departs the Wang Zhe shipyard to meet one of Arthur's contacts to bring in some much needed credits. Join GM of Doom "wacksteven" and the crew of the Black Fang in their intrepid science-fiction adventures! As always, you can get video or audio version of the show - simply subscribe to the YouTube channel or to the official podcast! Or, of course, you can watch the show live on Twitch as it goes out every Saturday! Note that the show features adult language.
What's Predation? It's a campaign setting for Monte Cook Games' Cypher System, written by Shanna Germain. Set a few hundred years in the future, time travellers send scientists to the Cretaceous period ... who become stranded there! Technology and dinosaurs mix! The setting will be available for pre-order soon. In the meantime, writer Shanna Germain has posted a quick look at the book's introduction, which you can see below. I think most of us can agree that dinosaurs are, indeed, awesome.

RISE OF THE DUNGEON MASTER - Gygax's Story In A Graphic Novel

For those who are interested in the history of Dungeons & Dragons, this graphic novel tells the story of Gary Gygax, co-creator of the game. By David Kushner, incorporating information from interviews with both Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, and will be available on May 9th. I haven't seen it myself (I'm pre-ordering it though). "Rise of the Dungeon Master tells, in graphic form, the story of Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons, one of the most influential games ever made. Like the game itself, the narrative casts the reader into the adventure from a first person point of view, taking on the roles of the different characters in the story."
Kickstarter went down during the last hour of the A Touch of Class campaign, meaning that some people were unable to back the project. Additionally, some people are unable to use Kickstarter's payment processor. If you are having trouble getting your card recognised by Kickstarter's payment processor, we have an alternative set up at Chronicle City. Additionally, if you tried to pledge in the last hour of the Kickstarter and were unable because Kickstarter was down (yeah, great timing, I know) this is an opportunity to sneak in a pledge. Again, you'll have to be quick. Click here or on the image below.
