White Wolf has just announced the Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition "pre-alpha" playtest, which you can download and play right now! The company also has an attached survey for playtest feedback. "Today we are sharing with you the Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition (V5) pre-alpha playtest kit, which includes the V5 pre-alpha rules and a special V5 pre-alpha scenario, The Night After. We invite you to download the kit and try it out: invite a few friends to play through the scenario together, talk about it, and then share your opinions with us through the online survey. We appreciate your feedback and value your input." The survey closes on August 1st, so you have about six weeks, after which WW will release the next iteration, the "alpha playtest".
You may be aware that the critically acclaimed ZEITGEIST: The Gears of Revolution adventure path is being released on EN5ider, the 5E Patreon. If you want to make sure you're ready for the first adventure, Island at the Axis of the World, next month, listed below is what you need in advance (all available to EN5ider patrons). In the ZEITGEIST™ campaign saga, your characters serve in the Homeland Constabulary of the nation of Risur, protecting the country and its citizens from foreign threats lurking within Risur’s borders. During missions of espionage and assassination, your duty will be to root out hostile spies and pursue international conspiracies. As you learn more of your homeland’s own secrets, however, your loyalties may be tested, may even be turned, and you may find that it is you whose hand controls the gears of the turning age. "Smart, glorious and very cinematic, this saga is phenomenal and frankly leaves me puzzled how EN Publishing ever wants to top it. Again: Monument. Get it. If you've been disillusioned by published modules and their bugs or just the relative simplicity of many a plotline, this is the ultimate panacea for your roleplayer-weltschmerz." - Endzeitgeist (reviewer; no relation).
Bruce Heard has sent over an exclusive preview of the latest in the Calidar series, “Dreams of Aerie”. Dreams of Aerie is the third in the World of Calidar series. You may remember the first book In Stranger Skies, still listed near the top of EN World’s Certified Chart, more than two years after its initial release. Calidar books are tabletop RPG accessories that aren’t game-specific; in other words, they can be run with most role-playing game mechanics. The new book describes the Greatest Show on Calidar, a flying circus that offers amazing fantasy spectacles to the townspeople of Calidar. It welcomes among its crew misfits, freaks, those seeking solace from a society that fears or persecutes them, as well as deceivers with shady pasts. Unknown to all but circus folk, the glorious vessel travels the world in search of ancient artifacts. A benevolent god’s cult prevails aboard, patron of beast handlers and showmanship, an epic hero who earned immortality in Calidar’s ancient past. But not all is well aboard. Heroes are hired to investigate a mysterious murder. In the course of their mission, they uncover dark things, some causing shivers to run down their spines. Not everyone or everything dwelling aboard welcomes the adventurers’ meddling. UPDATE - the Kickstarter has launched!
Turn Order: Warped, the official stream of the WOIN roleplaying game system, is back with a new episode! "The crew of the Black Fang investigates the ship they boarded, and deals with a loss." Join GM of Doom "wacksteven" and the crew of the Black Fang in their intrepid science-fiction adventures! As always, you can get video or audio version of the show - simply subscribe to the YouTube channel or to the official podcast! Or, of course, you can watch the show live on Twitch as it goes out every Saturday! Note that the show features adult language.
It's EN5ider's 150th article! To celebrate, Ari "Mouseferatu" Marmell, acclaimed fantasy novelist, Dungeons and Dragons author, and beloved member of the EN World community, has returned to EN5ider for its 150th issue! Though Ari is mostly writing fantasy novels nowadays, he decided to reprise his role as a top-notch RPG designer for this special event. Ari has returned to change the Tides of Battle by introducing cinematic stunts to Fifth Edition. With this combat module, your character gains the tools to perform amazing feats of acrobatics, use dirty tricks, and dazzle your enemies... without giving up any usefulness in combat in exchange for dramatic flair. Of course, GMs need not fear; it wouldn't be fair if the monsters didn't get these tricks, too...
The latest Unearthed Arcana from Mearls and Crawford revisits four subclasses from earlier UA articles. "Part of the fun of playtesting is seeing how feedback and play can push a design in new directions. In this month’s Unearthed Arcana, we revisit class material that appeared in previous installments: four subclasses for various classes, along with Eldritch Invocations for the warlock. This material was all popular, and the revisions to it were driven by feedback that thousands of you provided in surveys. The updated subclasses are the druid’s Circle of the Shepherd, the fighter’s Cavalier, the paladin’s Oath of Conquest, and the warlock’s Celestial (formerly known as the Undying Light). One of the main pieces of feedback we got about the Eldritch Invocations is that most players didn’t want them exclusive to particular Otherworldly Patron options, so we’ve opened them up to more warlocks, tweaked them, and cut the least popular ones."
Turn Order: Warped, the official stream of the WOIN roleplaying game system, is back with a new episode! "The Black Fang heads to Apep III to start gathering Cha'Etta plants but doesn't expect to find ships already there. How will they handle the situation?" Join GM of Doom "wacksteven" and the crew of the Black Fang in their intrepid science-fiction adventures! As always, you can get video or audio version of the show - simply subscribe to the YouTube channel or to the official podcast! Or, of course, you can watch the show live on Twitch as it goes out every Saturday! Note that the show features adult language.
UK Games Expo, with 16,500 unique attendees, just passed Origins (15,480 in 2016) for third place, behind Essen Spiel (174,000 turnstile in 2016) and Gen Con (60,819 in 2016), depending on what figure you use to measure it. The gap from Essen and Gen Con to those below it is pretty huge, while UKGE and Origins are pretty similar in scope. UKGE has been growing enormously every year - The last time I was there (before this year) it is was all in the Hilton Metropole in Birmingham. This time, it's spread to the N.E.C. It's starting to feel a bit like Gen Con - certainly like the Gen Cons of a few years ago.
Those looking forward to Modiphius' 2d20-based Star Trek Adventures may be excited to hear about a limited edition boxed set which contains a "1701-D" limited edition rulebook, miniatures, dice, tokens, a GM screen, geomorphic deck tiles, character sheets, and a poster map, Geek & Sundry is reporting. No details on price quite yet, but the pre-order opens on June 8th. But the best thing about it? It's shaped like a Borg Cube!
This artwork will be appearing on Paizo's Starfinder GM screen. The screen will be 4-panels, filled with rules, tables, and other important information. But for the moment, let's just look at this ridiculously awesome art by Ignacio Bazán Lazcano on the player's side of it.
Following up from the (long known but) recently announced Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying 4th Edition game coming later this year, Cubicle 7 has announced that they will also be producing a Warhammer Age of Sigmar game. Age of Sigmar is an "epic tale of heroes, gods and monsters fighting a desperate battle for the fate of the Mortal Realms". The two games won't be compatible - they will be two entirely different lines with different rulesets. The announcement is below.
Continuing the news coming out of Paizocon this weekend (see this article for the Starfinder version of this post) I continue to report on Wolfgang Baur's live photos of the banquet presentation. In this article we see the Book of the Damned (hi Orcus!), Two new adventure paths (Ruins of Azlant and War for the Crown), and the upcoming Ultimate Wilderness hardcover which features new feats, mounts, animal companions, magic items, and a new Shifter base class.
Every year, Kobold Press' Wolfgang Baur attends the banquet at Paizocon, which always features a slideshow and presentation of new products and announcements. And every year, Wolfgang snaps photographs live and shares them, and every year I post 'em (along with his comments) here. So, another year, another round of the Paizocon Banquet! In this post, I'll show the Starfinder related goodness (Pathfinder will be separate). Here goes! (Starfinder is, of course, Paizo's upcoming Pathfinder-in-space core rulebook, releasing at Gen Con this year).
Modiphius has sent along a preview of some more of their upcoming Star Trek miniatures, along with some art from the tabletop roleplaying game. Both focus on the Romulans. There are currently four miniature sets lined up - The Original Series Crew, The Next Generation Crew, Klingons and Romulans. They’ll be available with the Star Trek Adventures pre-order which launches June 8. Also, check out the Original Series and Next Generation bridge crews here.
Gaming is always better with props! This card deck for the WOIN (What's OLD is NEW) roleplaying game system gives your players physical currency to handle and exchange. No more tracking your wealth on your character sheet - your wealth tracks itself! As the PCs spend money, they hand gold coin cards to the GM, and as they obtain money, the GM hands gold coin cards back to them! designed for the WOIN system, these cards are suitable for any fantasy game which uses gold and silver coins.
Over on Beasts of War, there's a look at Modiphius' new Star Trek miniatures. These are 32mm unpainted resin miniatures featuring the original Enterprise crew, and the Next Generation crew. The game - Star Trek Adventures - uses Modiphius' 2d20 system (which was used in their Conan RPG, amongst other games) and is due for release in August.
