TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

Because the Saga of TSR3 has been ongoing for a while, with many landmarks, I thought I'd do a quick timeline for those who haven't had the time (or, frankly, inclination) to keep up with the whole palaver.

As multiple entities refer to themselves as TSR, I will use the nomenclature (1), (2) etc. to distinguish them. However, all the companies below simply use the term "TSR".

The principle people involved with this story are Ernie Gygax (one of Gary Gygax's children), Justin LaNasa (a tattooist, weapon designer, and briefly a politician who refers to himself as Sir Justin LaNasa*), Stephen Dinehart (co-creator of Giantlands with James Ward), and -- later -- Michael K. Hovermale, TSR3's PR officer.

Also linked to TSR3 is the Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Much of TSR3’s commercial business appears to be conducted via the museum.

  • Late June 2021. TSR3 embarks on an astonishing social media campaign where they tell people who don't like Gary Gygax not to play D&D, call a trans person on Twitter 'disgusting', thank the 'woke' because sales are up, insult Luke Gygax, and more. They also block or insult those who question them on Twitter.
  • Late June 2021. Various companies distance themselves from TSR3, including Gen Con, TSR2 (who rebrand themselves Solarian Games), GAMA, and various individuals such as Luke Gygax, Tim Kask, Jeff Dee, and more. TSR3 responds to being banned from Gen Con by claiming that they created the convention.

  • June 30th 2021. TSR3 blames the widespread pushback it is getting on WotC, accusing it of mounting a coordinated assault on them. In the same tweets they claim that they created the TTRPG business. Ernie Gygax and Stephen Dinehart then deactivate their Twitter accounts. Months later it transpires that this is the date they received a C&D from WotC regarding their use of their IP.

  • January 11th 2022. Michael K Hovermale claims that the first edition of TSR3's Star Frontiers: New Genesis game was released and has sold out. He says “It was a very small limited run released and sold on the DHSM [Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum] website. It is no longer available, and probably won’t be reprinted.” As yet, nobody has publicly revealed that they bought a copy.
  • January 14th 2022. Michael K. Hovermale resigns as TSR3's Chief Creative Officer and Public Relations Officer after 6 months in the position.
  • March 4th 2022. WotC strikes back with a lawsuit naming TSR, Justin LaNasa personally, and the Dungeon Hobby Shop museum. WotC seeks a judgement that TSR hand over all domains, take down all websites, pay treble damages and costs, hand over all stock and proceeds related to the trademarks, and more. TSR has 21 days to respond.

  • March 22nd 2022. TSR gets an extension on that WoTC suit. Two waivers of service of summons granted to both Justin LaNasa and the Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum. He now has 60 days from March 4th to serve an answer or motion, or suffer default judgment.
  • March 26th 2022. TSR CON takes place at the same time as Gary Con. TSR claims " lol, actually we asked just about every one of the 800 people stopping by, TSR CON, and about 60% had no idea Gary con was going on, and we tried pushing them to go over and attend."

  • May 17th 2022. DriveThruRPG removes all Dave Johnson Games titles from the platform.
  • May 17th 2022. A jury trial date is set for the TSR/WotC lawsuit for October 2023 (few suits like this actually make it to trial in the end).

  • July 19th 2022. A leaked version of a beta version of TSR's 'Star Frontiers: New Genesis' game emerges on the internet. The content includes racist and white-supremacist propaganda, including character races with ability caps based on ethnicity, and various homophobic and transphobic references. Justin LaNasa immediately threatened to sue blogger Eric Tenkar, who shared the information publicly ('Mario Real' is one of LaNasa's online pseudonyms). Various evidence points towards the document's genuine nature, including an accidentally revealed Google drive belonging to NuTSR.
  • July 22nd 2022. A video shows a Google Drive that appears to be owned by nuTSR, which contains a list of enemies of the company, usually with the word "WOKE" in caps being used as a pejorative.

  • September 8th 2022. WoTC files an injunction to prevent LaNasa or his companies from “publishing, distributing, or otherwise making available Star Frontiers New Genesis or any iteration of the game using the Marks”.
  • June 8th 2023. NuTSR files for bankruptcy. The case between WotC and NuTSR is postponed until March 2024.

Have I missed anything important? I'll continue updating this as I remember things, or as people remind me of things!

To the best of my knowledge, TSR3 is not actually selling any type of gaming product.

*if anybody has any link to LaNasa's knighthood, please let me know!

Websites
Various websites have come and gone. I'll try to make some sense of it here so you know what site you're actually visiting!
  • TSR.com is the original TSR website. For a long time it redirected to WotC. The URL is no longer in use. (WotC)
  • TSRgames.com was TSR2 until summer 2021. The site is still running, although TSR2 is now called Solarian Games. (Jayson Elliot)
  • TSR.games was TSR3 until summer 2021. It now goes to Wonderfiled(sic)'s website. (Stephen Dinehart)
  • TSR-hobbies.com is TSR 3.5, launched summer 2021 by Justin LaNasa and Ernie Gygax. (Justin LaNasa)

Misspellings are an indication of lack of care, effort, and attention paid to what they are doing.
We know that LaNasa has in the past had a very loose concept of security when it comes to protecting customer information. I assume that this was purely carelessness on his part rather than as part of some plan to scam those people out of money. This "gameing" advert proves that he has not, as you say, gotten any more careful, put in any more effort, or learned to pay any more attention.

Sadly, those people who were not scared away from supporting him due to his past actions will not realize that this typo in indicative of his abilities as a whole.

I am very much of two minds of this... I am old enough to remember the "good old days" when bully culture was most of business and school environments (and anyone who has ever tried to read my thoughts know I am very bad at spelling, and in general written communication that isn't LONG term with lots of rewrites, I will make a ton of mistakes. So I am against 'pile on' for spelling errors...

on the other hand my level of 'going to defend this person' is so low it may be negative numbers because I do feel he is the worst..

but I will jut say, rising above may be better tactic.

Someone once told me that my inability to remember other people's names was an indication that I didn't care about other people. I replied, "Eff you .... um .... buddy."

I agree with that. When PCGen had booths at GenCon I remember having conversations (minutia details and everything) from previous years with people that stopped by and they were shocked I remembered them, but I couldn't remember their names. It takes a WHILE of constant interactions for me to remember names, faces and body shapes are great for me.

As one of those people who has issues connecting faces with names, I find your comment was appropriate.

Writren copy can be passed through any modern word processer, and many web-based text boxes, and basic spelling errors found and corrected. You can pass your text through MS Word and fix all these. You can't do that with someone's face, to get their name (or make corrections to their face, come to think of it).

No, really, you can't. Please don't mash anyone's face into the keyboard to try it....
I’m atrocious with remembering oriole’s names most of the time. I have extreme difficulties remembering the names of the wives of the guys I’ve gamed with since the late 1990s, and that’s with me having been a frequent guest in their households.

What makes it more embarrassing is the uncanny accuracy of my memory for things like band names/songs/musicians, RPG game book page references and other things.

I can explain some of it by exposure & repetition, and some of it because I use photographic memory techniques, but not all of it. For instance, when I told someone a particular game rule was on page X, they looked, and it wasn’t there. I said they were using the 3.5Ed book, not the 3Ed one, so look 4 pages later, and there it was. At that point, it really looked like I couldn’t remember his wife’s name because she didn’t matter to me. But it was because I could see those pages in my mind, having needed to use those rules frequently.

Or how, watching episodes of “Beat Shazam” and “Name That Tune”, I only miss an average one song per show.

Re: nitpicking, dog piling & harassment

Generally, they’re not the best look in social discussions. Often, they’re discouraged. But most rhetorical tactics have a legitimate use.

In the case of a belligerent, narcissistic, bigoted bully like LaNasa, the tactics in question can be quite provocative, and can lead to an increased number of mistakes. They can illustrate patterns of behavior. They can illuminate lies.

There is evidence of all of that in this situation. At the very least, even the minor and otherwise inconsequential editing/communications errors depict a pattern of behavior. They show a commonality of a style of expression that are unlikely to be the work of anyone else but Justin LaNassa, despite his claims of “photoshopping” and other alterations to his works.

They also illustrate a consistent lack of professionalism.

And a lot of this can be used in WotC’s legal defense & counterclaim. And may well be.

Yeeeeah...

No one in this thread is going "You're so (insert ableist slur here) Lanasa, it's spelled GAMING!" to bully the man.

It's all about compiling ever more piles of evidence of just how much of a continuous liar and unprofessional jerk he is. Maybe it's a pathological issue, but mostly we think it's just because he's that kind of self-aggrandizing person who is incapable of admitting his mistakes or faults and instead tries to control everything and everyone around him at all times... And no matter how bald face or bad faith his lies and arguments are, he just -keeps- going.

Now is it -petty-? Yes.
Is it spiteful? Absolutely.
Is it cathartic? 100%.

But I would not describe it as bullying. As attacks on the man and his character for the purpose of causing emotional harm.

It's all about compiling ever more piles of evidence of just how much of a continuous liar and unprofessional jerk he is.
The point I'm trying to make is that it seems to have moved beyond "compiling evidence" into "manufacturing evidence". I gave two examples of it already. And as I've said, he's done so many bad things already, there is absolutely no need to manufacture evidence, and it's a dangerous road to take.
