TUW: The Steel Trade [IC]

San-Bolo stay together and keep to the back of the group where they can keep a watchful eye on Seekers and Maldrog. They make no offensive movements, and Bolo keeps Turtle close to her side.

Merin mentions: "Hopefully, since this appears to be a large settlement, they'll have at least one person among them who speaks either Centrin or Ansilyn, who can translate for us."

Day 129: The Maldrog Gate

gate2.jpg
OOC: This is not exactly right, but it gives the right idea. This is, of course, from Game of Thrones.

The actual gate before the party is made from iron reinforced logs, not stone. The Mhytre archers are armed with crossbows. The bow are at rest, not being aimed at the party.

Tor cannot remember how to greet in Maldrog, but Bolo does. She says the word instinctively as Tor waves. Her voice only being loud enough for the party to hear, Tor looks back at her, nods, and then repeats it for the guard.
OOC: Bolo has the highest cumulative Knowledge score.

GM: Sheldon, Indigo, and Myth are in the lead at this time, since Sannit, Bolo, and Turtle are in the back. Tor, Merin, Saemund, and Vadin are spaced out through the pack animal train. Feroz is still aloft.

Shortly after Tor calls out the greeting in Maldrog, the pass door opens in the gate. A middle aged Maldrog exits and the door is closed behind him. He speaks to the party using his own tongue and in short sentences, but he soon realizes that no one in the party can understand.

Sheldon shows the man one of the metal plates and then a flask of oil. The man also notes any other gesture of trade from any other party member. He turns and gives a signal to the guard atop the gate. The man gestures for the party to enter. He seems a bit concerned about the cat but shows no such reservation toward the bear. Either way, the companions are also allowed to enter with the party and the pack animals.

The elevation climbs steeply as the party enters the gate. The city, and it is a city, that fans out before the Seekers is much more magnificent and grand than the party could have ever expected. The city is not so large as Asylim, but even at this first glance, it appears to be at least three times the size of Southroad Fair.

Mhytres who are working wave in a friendly manner. Children come up to directly greet the party. They are very curious about the cat and the bear. Several adults show particular fascination with the exquisite quality of the Seekers' armor.

Day 129: Bergbaulager, the Maldrog City

GM: The party is lead to an open plaza area before the most magnificent body of water any of them has ever seen.

lake.jpg

GM: There is an extensive wharf with boats of various sizes. The style of vessel is much different than what can be found in Asylim. Not a single boat, no matter the size, is equipped with a sail. A vessels are fitted for oars. A team of Mhytres is currently loading material on a large flat barge. It appears that trade is being conducted with some other community elsewhere on the lake.

The man who led the party to the plaza departs with a wave and gesture to wait. The normal business of the town goes on uninterrupted by the presence of the Seekers. It appears that the party will be left alone for a few minutes.

Tor marvels at the expanse of water, and at the oar-powered boats and barges, whistling appreciatively: "Quite impressive. It appears that these Maldrog are well-established traders. It is we who are the neophytes, here. I suggest that we treat them with great respect, and politeness."

Merin nods in agreement: "I suspect they have gone to fetch a translator. I look forward to talking with them at length. I have many, many questions. They seem to like our leather armor; we should let them know there is more to be had in Southroad Fair, I'm sure they'd be interested in forming some sort of trade route. Our leather is probably the perfect compliment to their skill with metal plating."

Sannit smiles and waves, but says to the Seekers, "Let's not let them separate us. I'm all for making friends and possible trade allies, but any place this size can hold hidden dangers."
He takes note of the architecture, trying to determine which are the important buildings, like a palace or temple.

Bolo takes encouragement from the fact that children are allowed to approach them. She asks Turtle to do some tricks. She says, "I'm sure the guards are watching us from somewhere. It would not surprise me to find out that this is only their forward settlement, the one they let strangers see. The real community is likely the one they trade with across the water."

Turtle stands up on his hind legs and dances around with the children. He does not like being shut behind a gate, but he knows people love their walls and doors.

Day 129: Bergbaulager

Sannit ...takes note of the architecture, trying to determine which are the important buildings, like a palace or temple.
GM: The enormous lake stretches out before the party. It seems to be the focus of the city rather than the gate to the mountain pass through which the party passed. There are hewn pillars designating the plaza, which indicates some advanced skill in masonry. Most of the building appear to be compiled of cut stones, some of which are colorful and decorative. There are placards on some buildings indicating their purpose. The party can easily recognize some. Near the lake edge of the plaza facing the wharf is a tavern and an inn. The ringing sounds of a hammer also brings the party's attention to a blacksmith.

Everyone within the city, except the Seekers, is Maldrog. Most are wearing basic clothing of cloth or skins. Many are adorned with metal jewelry. Very few carry weapons. An occasional guard in metal barded armor passes and nods at the party. Several guards are stationed about the wharf.

On the opposite end of the plaza, away from the lake, are residences built into the mountain, itself. A few other building look to be of importance, but their use is not known to the party at this time.

GM: Several adults as well as children stops to watch Turtle perform. They laugh and applaud.

Cats not being much for tricks, Indigo has Myth roll onto his back as she pets his belly. She is mostly hoping to demonstrate that the cat is friendly.
GM: One young boy come over and touches the cat, with Indigo's permission. He then backs away and talks excitedly with his friends.

After a few minutes, the hammering of the smith stops, and the man looks out from his work area. He is quite a large specimen, even for a Mhytre. He gestures a greeting, nods, then goes back to his work.

OOC: GM Note:
Party XP will be awarded for these actions.

Saemund is astounded by the lake and its beauty. Saemund send Feroz feelings of safety and complacency and lets him know he doesn't have to watch over them right now...

Feroz flies over the lake and can be seen diving bombing for fish.

GM: Eagles and ospreys being common over the lake, the presence of the hawk is of no consequence to the townsfolk, even after he manages to catch a fish and fly to the top of one of the near buildings to consume it. Feroz calls once to Saemund to let him know where he is.

There is no good landing to fly directly back to Saemund.

Day 129: Bergbaulager, Part 2

GM: A middle aged Maldrog, accompanied by a slightly younger Maldrog approach the Seekers from further back within the city. Both appear to be of importance. The one who appears to be in charge speaks first, introducing himself and giving a small speech, none of which any of the party understands. He pauses, looks at each of the Seekers, realizing that he cannot be understood and repeats what is obviously his name and title.

Oben Vorarbeiter Granit.

Sheldon looks at Sannit, who nods, and then he addresses the man in Ansylin followed by Centrin.
"We are the Southroad Seekers. I am Sheldon. This is Indigo, Sannit, Bolo, Merin, Tor, Saemund, and Vadin."

GM: Neither man can understand either language but each listens in a dignified manner as if practiced at the art. The exchange of names is understood as the mannerism transcends language.

The second man introduces himself as Vorarbeiter von Finanzen, MeiBelen, and attempts to garner information about the desire for trade using more gesture than words. A small crowd has gathered at this time and the process is interrupted by the return of the blacksmith.

The smith greets the party in a friendly manner. He appears to be about 6'2" tall and probably 10 years older than the party members. Though not having the height of a Dahmre, he is every bit as broad and heavily muscled. He takes of his apron and hands it to a boy, nearby. He then gestures at Tor and puts up his fist calling him to a fight, all the while smiling.

The Ober Vorarbeiter shakes his head and gives a small laugh. He then steps back as the crowd is forming a circle as more of the townsfolk stop what they are doing to come watch. Immediately at the offer to fight, many people in the crowd begin making bets with one another.

Sheldon looks at Tor.
"Not the best of circumstances, but I think this has some cultural significance for these people. I would be willing to bet that what you decide here has significant impact upon any future relationship we might formulate. In fact, I think I will make a bet!"

Sheldon, approaching one of the Maldrog ringing the open area and through much gesture, manages to place a bet using some of the Ansylin clams he has.
