D&D (2024) The Lackluster Ranger

honestly, capstone at 20th level is so irrelevant for that as it is not seen in 99% of the games.
Capstone should be at 11th level with possible improvements or extra usages later.
11th level means it cannot be taken by 2 classes for multiclass character.

now when I think about it, I now remembered that @DND_Reborn did with his variant:

all NEW abilities should come before 11th level, maybe at reduced power, so you can enjoy them in most of campaigns.
Funny thing: the ranger capstone starts at level 13. 11 for some subclasses.

The problem with combat bonuses by type is that 5e doesn't enforce resistance, immunity, and damage bonus by creature type like older edition.

I once pondered a game where each monster type had a strength and weakness like plants having fire vulnerability but lightning resistance.

There the ranger analog could spend magic to swap damage types.
Like in Pokemon???

It is funny you brought this up! I was just talking to him today and he is back to work on this project, for the "Faster Features".

His concept is to develop it as an E12-type (all features gained by level 12) game and then allow levels beyond 12 for higher proficiency bonus, hit dice, etc.

I'm sure he'll be happy to hear you remembered his work from years ago.

I'm only worried for high level spells getting online too early.

will they still be at "normal" pace or also accelerated.
might be best to keep them at bay as long as possible...

They are normal pace, just like in the Faster Features thread.

IIRC Paladins and Rangers got their higher level slots faster because of issues like a Wizard casting steel wind strike several levels before a Ranger could, or a Bard casting find greater steed several levels before a Paladin.

However, I think the number of slots was reduced at lower levels to compensate for getting access to higher level spells sooner, and then the extra slots came online after 10th level.

I do remember, that by 20th level, the PC should be the same as RAW--that was always a goal.

I’d assume spells fall under the ‘progression’ clause, spellcasting is already a feature you have you’re just getting more of it.

I did similar for 1/2 casters already:

1st table is current and 2nd table is variant for faster casting,
Spell Point column is to compare how close is the value of changed spell slot progression.
