It’s the 40th anniversary of Call of Cthulhu and amid the celebration of that milestone, The Chaosium Group publicized a new convention. Announcing the first Chaosium Con coming to Ann Arbor, Michigan on April 8th and 9th, 2022 is a bold step, but all part of Chaosium’s ongoing strategy of engaging with their fanbase. In 2020, I interviewed Michael O’Brien (MOB) about the pandemic induced...
The SCP Foundation is a fictional secret organization created through a wiki-based collaborative writing project. It's also a treasure trove of ideas for role-playing games.
Forty years may be the blink of an eye to a Great Old One but for the tabletop games industry it’s the sign of an institution. Call of Cthulhu arrived on the scene in 1981 introducing games to the terrifying world of H.P. Lovecraft and has since become synonymous with horror gaming. The RPG has star-spawned books, tabletop games, video games and media of its own. This game arguably introduced...
Delta Green brings horror and modern conflict to game tables with plenty of adventure support. And now it has an entire connected campaign called Impossible Landscapes. A GM can kick off an entire campaign with a pursuit of the terrors of Carcosa and the King in Yellow.
Cocaine & Alligators is why I keep searching for RPGs each week. Yeah, the supplement for Troika!, what did you think I meant? Gems like this one keep me sane. And so many other great RPGs this week. Modules for D&D and Call of Cthulhu. Support for the monster campaign Impossible Landscapes and magic in RuneQuest. Osprey’s newest digest sized unique RPG. And Mörk Borg supplements. A week with...
This week’s article looks are RPG crowdfunding projects that end between August 24th to September 12th. As always, it’s not an exhaustive list of the RPG campaigns available Kickstarter, IndieGoGo, GameOnTabletop, or GameFound, instead this series shows a sampling of some of the great games that are out there.
This week has so many winners. Chaosium, Arc Dream Publishing, Modiphius, Goodman Games, Legendary Game, and Troll Lord Games all have new releases for sci-fi, fantasy, and horror. Dune is back, this time by Modiphius. Modern spies and monsters and treasures are out for D&D. Pathfinder 2E gets an adventure and Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG gets a complete dice set that glows in the dark along...
Chaosium has a new Kickstarter bringing back a set of old products, Call of Cthulhu Classics. Having reached six figures of funding as of this writing, I was glad when Chaosium President, Rick Meints, shared his reasons behind bringing these boxed sets back, what’s new in them, and some of their upcoming projects.
This week, I look at crowdfunding projects that end between July 19th and August 5th. While these projects include D&D, Savage Worlds, GURPS, and original systems, I’m also sharing an upcoming gaming convention.
This week, I look at some of the RPG crowdfunding projects that end between July 9th and the 31st. This is not an exhaustive list and I’ll revisit the latter half of this month in next week’s column as there are so many projects that I just can’t cover them all here.
The Children of Fear (PDF) for Call of Cthulhu (PDF) ranges across 1920s Asia, spreading the fear and horror of the Mythos or the occult through multiple countries. The investigators (or heroes) decide the path their journey will take as they battle to stop the King of Fear from destroying everything they care about.
I picked up Malleus Monstrorum because of Pulp Cthulhu (review). In Pulp Cthulhu PCs are heroes who shoot and fight to defeat the Mythos. I want my PCs to fight cultists and evil villains but also monsters. So, I wanted to see what MM had to offer. And c’mon, the cover art is really creepy. Great start.
Pulp Cthulhu (Pulp Cthulhu print) is one of the main reasons I enjoy Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition so much. You play a hero instead of an investigator, you live a bit longer, and you have a bit more talent. Not that you always want to be a hero but having the option to play either one greatly increases the options for the game. And you can shoot a Mi-Go right in the convoluted ellipsoid and...
The Call of Cthulhu RPG offers rules and a 1920s setting of cosmic mind-bending horror together in one package. In a similar way, the Call of Cthulhu Slipcase Set combines a book of comprehensive rules and monsters with a tome of detailed history and rounds it all out with a Keeper screen, maps, adventures, a reference booklet, and blank character sheets. A whole world of horror is described...
This month brings more monsters to D&D from DMDave, one on one adventures for Call of Cthulhu, dark historical settings for Chronicles of Darkness, and NPCs and an adventure for Champions. Also, books for Heart - The City Beneath are available again and four sci-fi minis finish the week.
This week I look at projects that end between May 5th and 22nd. Right now, there are six RPG products and three RPG-related projects that are funding at six figures or more. While I don’t look at all nine of them in this article, the totals demonstrate that the audience for RPGs on Kickstarter continues to grow.
