and?

you have options and you have default build.

so anyone can use it.
The fact that you will have to display both the talent and spells will intimidate at least a quarter of prospecting players to the class.

Then you have to balance it.

The Warlock works because it is already a full caster AND most of its invocations are just spells.

who are these timid players you speak of?
I haven't met ONE!

oh the horror, actually having to do your job while making a game. Horror.

lot's of them are not spells also.
and people love warlock just because of that. only class that gives some room for customization.

I'm running for 3.

I have a player who refuses to pick his spells/feats as that makes his eyes glaze over and forces me or the party leader to chose his spells on level up.
Eventually I had to design a class for him.

And build videos often do the thinking for some people.

A big chunk of fans don't read the books.

champion fighter for him then...
does he really want to play D&D? At all?

or is it just one of the guys that does not want to miss the weekly get together?

this is not rule intimidation, this is rule ignoring, that is the difference.
props for having patience for him.

this is the problem, I agree

why play D&D if can't be bothered to read the rules?
how can you play any game without reading the rules?

unless we are talking about toddlers.
then it's a whole new game and a whole new mindset you need to have.

Get off my lawn!
that is why you do both.

you make a class with 50 options to take(talents, invocations or what not)

and then you make 2 preselect builds:

1. Here is your dual wielder with animal companion, Drizzt wannabe

2. Here is your archer robinhood.

done.
If only there was a "Basic" D&D for the casual player and a "Advanced" D&D for the hardcore player...

hehe.

but, you can make "advanced" game by default and the make preset with most simple and straightforward options.
and have the "basic" game.

but when you design it as "basic" it's over, you are already locked with design.

I know this is hard for some people to understand but...

Some people don't like sifting through a ton of options to get to the destination.

Some people just want to play a rockstar bard that blasts people with sound and sways the crowd

Jimmy might want to be a longsword utility ranger like Aragorn or a greatsword support ranger like Jon Snow.
Jimmy might not want to read a Fighting style list, Spell List, and Talent list to get there.

True, but I think it is best developed and marketed as two separate games IMO.

For example, one thing I am anxious to see about the 2024 MM (which might offer WotC some degree of redemtion in my eyes) is how creatures work and what they are capable of.

Players have so many features and powers for their PCs, given them more options in the game. But as DM, most creatures are fairly straight-forward in design, with a couple features at best. Many times I give creatures "cool stuff" like PCs get just to keep them more engaging to run and encounter.

There seems an imbalance, I guess you could say, and I would either like to see characters "basic" like creatures, or creatures "advanced" like characters.

fair enough, but you are right, I do not understand that.
if I want to do something, I look it up if needed, if I can't be bothered, then I will not do that at all.

that is why, there needs to be a preset.
we have it with casters now,
we get pre selected spells, 6 known for wizard for the spellbook, or if you do not like them, pick any 6.

all 20 levels can be done that way.

sounds like Jimmy needs a kick in the read side, hahaha.
