Shadowrun: For Us It Was a Tuesday [OOC]

Okay. So the door is not wirelessly accessible. I'll assume that means whatever network it's on is also not. :)

This is not the end, never fear. If the door can be accessed via a wire connection, Echo's still in the ballpark. She can use her trodes and commlink to form a direct neutral connection with a device, then create a little tiny network through those devices that she accesses with her Persona.

It's a little risky, cuz bricking her commlink will shut it down, but if she's sleazy enough and fast enough it should be enough. :)

For the sake of the post, shall we say that Echo can detect the presence of the network, but it's not open to any wireless access, making it inaccessible?

I would agree with that, however, I was planning on having wireless interface just beyond the sealed door for... reasons. So how do we crack that nut? Lead plating and jammers around the exterior's interior, making the wireless inaccessible until you are inside?

Two easy ways exist.

1) The building has its own self-contained network, it's wireless capable (hence Echo is able to detect it) but designed to flatly refuse ANY outside attempts to connect. It has a hardcoded set of approved network addresses, all internal, and any contact from outside that is rejected. To hack it, you'd need to physically interface with a system that's whitelisted, and use that to access the network from inside.

2) The building has a Faraday Cage, which blocks any and all radio and microwave frequency emissions, going in or coming out. Echo would not sense the presence of a network, but could sense the 'black hole' in the background radiation of the city in that spot. No attempt at hacking could succeed...or even be contemplated, until inside the cage. The faraday cage is a physical thing, a mesh of wires implanted in or behind the warehouse walls. It can be disrupted by breaching the walls, or bypassed by entering. Any physical point of entry, like a door or a window, is a possible weakness in the cage. Once inside, the system can be hacked as normal.

In either case, the isolation of the system is a powerful defense, but it would mean Grid Overwatch is not in effect within it.

Clearly, I need to read my Shadowrun book. I understood only about 23% of what ya'll just discussed. And this is with an undergraduate degree in Computer Information Systems. :(

Good thing I have a pretty girl shoot-em character, eh?

I think the Faraday Cage makes the most sense for what I envisioned is going on inside the warehouse/research facility. So we're going with that. Thanks for the assist!

Hah! My *SuperPhD in Technobabble wins again!

Deuce, sounds good! I will incorporate that into my expository post.

[sblock=*]BECAUSE WHY NOT?![/sblock]

I'm with you Sista, I have no clue!

I am here, reading along. I have been researching pictures, names and thinking on personality just so I can get going and then subsequently follow DT's advice to just shoot everything ;)

I promise, it'll be soon!

I take it we're going in hard, then?

Works for me, since that's about *all* I can do. :p Open question, seeing as I have seemingly one of every kind of gun on my character sheet, which ones should I be carrying for this mission? Unless this is D&D-style encumbrance, which I suspect it's not, then carrying an assault rifle, a sniper rifle, a katana, a shotgun, a light machine gun, a submachine gun, three different pistols, and a grenade launcher (but wait! there's more!)...that's not really feasible. So you veteran 'Runners, drop me a clue here. What are people's suggestions?

lol yeah, I was noticing the 'pregen' characters are real Christmas Trees that way.

Yeah, no, you don't need all those. It's a terrible waste of money.

Bring the Grenade Launcher, the Assault Rifle and a Heavy Pistol. And the katana, I guess, though if someone needs to be killed in melee, we have a troll for that. :)

The GL is for clearing crowds and breaching barriers. The AR is for suppression and bursts on armored targets, and the pistol is a backup weapon in case the shitake hits the fan and it's all you've got. The katana is because Shadowrun and of COURSE katana. Trenchcoat is also mandatory.

Sniper rifle is too situational. They're AMAZING when you have someone who can set one up off the map and just plink guys from an elevated location. They're nigh-useless when you're in close quarters. Shotguns are either useless against armor, or not much better than a high caliber pistol. LMGs can be intense, but their Recoil is crazy high. You have to have good gear and (ideally) a stabilized mount if you want to hit more than the walls. SMGs are good in the hands of a bullet wizard adept who can dual-wield, but otherwise an assault rifle outshines them in every way.

So yeah. Grenade launcher, assault rifle, heavy pistol (ares predator or browning if they gave you one) and katana. All the dakka anyone ever needs. :)

@Shayuri Thanks for yet another assist, always appreciated. :)

Okay, so let's nail this down, weapons-wise: Ares Alpha assault rifle, no-name brand grenade launcher, one katana (of the two that the pregen comes with), grenades (high explosive and thermal smoke, 4 of each), Defiance EX Shocker (taser), and I suppose that frees me up to bring along two pistols (I've got a Ruger Super Warhawk, a Fichetti Security 600, and a silenced Ares Crusader II machine pistol; think I'll bring just the former and the latter) plus both of my knives and all (2) of my shurikens.

On a different mission I'm sure we'd be glad to have the sniper rifle and LMG, but yeah, I kinda figured those'd be very op-specific.
